What Things Are Just Not Worth The Money?

Was chatting to a Rich old bloke today who owns a Ferreri he is in his 70s and has had this car in his man cave for decade that essentially he never drives, he admits the car is over a decade old and has less then 5000km on the odometer….

He was saying a annual service could easily hit 3k and my reponse was but 'you never drive the car…why what is the point'

his reponse is 'i cant drive it around here becuz id be too scared to park it and leave it' [Western Suburbs of Melbourne]

i said fair enough but it seems kind of 'pointless and expensive'

what shocks me is this guy is 'wealthy' but he is also a giant cheap skate so for him to blow money on this had me a bit shocked

Got me thinking what do you own or what do other people you know own or blow money on that you just think what a waste of money…..

    your story isn't worth it

had this car in his man cave for 2 decades that essentially he never drives, he admits the car is over a decade old

    WHAT?

    • +35

It's basically Cameron's dad from Ferris Bueller.

    • -1

lmao yea sounds silly but according to this bloke the he brought the car around 20 years ago and is has bearly been driven in decades - im not 100 percent sure what that mean either

      • Where did he bring it to?

    • +5

Technically the car is over a decade old if he's had it in his man cave for 20 years lol

    Phones over $200
    .

    • +21

Cheaper phones have certainly improved however not long a go, spending a bit more cash on a phone was certainly worth and needed.
Considering you use it all day everyday.

        • +2

IPhones are way too popular in Australia and this makes proprietary closed-wall bullshit like Airdrop standard.

Try sending around 100 photos or files over 25MB to a random number of people. Airdrop is by far the most straightforward method and that covers like 90% of the receivers.

The rest, you cant do email but can do FB, android nearby sharing, setting up telegram, google drive of some sort, send them a link. None of them is as straightforward. The receivers must have had set up telegram, whatsapp, google drive, etc on their phone/computer on their device in order to receive it, and many times they dont.

          • +11

@ripesashimi: Understood but don't agree. Have never had to send 100 photos to anyone but when i do send lots Google Photos or Whatsapp has it covered.

"The receivers must have had set up telegram, whatsapp, google drive, etc on their phone/computer" or they have had to buy an iphone which isn't everyone either.

            • +3

@aimon: I would imagine installing what's app is easier than buying an iPhone just send a large batch of photos. Ditched the iPhone after the 5s, poor value for money apart from the ecosystem.

            • @aimon: Whatsapp compresses the photos and videos so the quality isn't always the best.

          • +8

@ripesashimi: How can it cover 90 percent of receivers when apple doesnt have 90 percent of the market?

            • @Tleyx: That is Apple user maths ( or the lack of maths ability) - disclaimer: have both Android and iOS phones.

      • I don't own a smart phone.

    • +39

yeah nah… anything below $200 is absolute trash.

    • +5

My last 3 phones were the low end Android "bargain" phones according to Ozbargain and Whirlpool and 2/3 were full of bloat so I can definitely see the appeal of the more high end phones. You get what you pay for software wise with these cheap phones.

      • You can uninstall or disable some. When you have 100's of apps anyway, a few useless ones don't cause much of a problem.

    • +3

Compared to how much one typically uses their phone, its an investment alright.

    • +1

I tried a couple entry-level android phones and they were great bang for the buck but I felt the compromises too often; lack of NFC being the big one. They also failed in stupid ways - the phone app developing a bug and not alerting for incoming calls was quite galling.

What I recommend instead is old flagship/big brand phones. I use a pixel 3, wife a Galaxy S19. Not quite $200 but close and we'll supported with cases still available.

      • and putting LineageOS on that old phone can make it current (if there's an available image for that model)

      • +5

Mate, where did you get Galaxy S19 from?

        • +1

Apparently I made the S19 up. It's whatever the 4 generation old galaxy is.

    • +5

Maybe if you're a casual user but if you use a phone for business, QOL alone will make a more expensive phone worth it.

    • Bought some $200 phones for kids during covid… they are barely usable.

    • I pay a premium for the camera. Havent used my mirrorless in ages

Odds are that Ferrari has gone up massively in value, probably a great investment.

Caviar isn't worth the money. It's just (profanity) fish eggs and just because it's from the black sea wild sturgeon or whatever doesn't make it worth 500 times as much as other fish eggs.

Diamonds are a waste of money too. We're not far off mass produced diamonds being way better and cheaper than the blood diamonds the De Beers family controls.

        • Not a difficult game in this case.

Incredible how much force it puts into the 4WD even at that low speed, pretty scary for the car behind to suddenly have a 2t vehicle pushed up onto the bonnet/windscreen.

          • @caitsith01: I suspect part of this is the Ferrari is like a wedge and the 4WD has a high wheel base.

    • Beluga caviar has been effectively farmed, which has brought prices down, but still expensive relative to other fish roe because sturgeons take a long time to reach sexual maturity, up to 10 years before harvest.

    • +2

Chicken eggs are much cheaper than fish eggs, and they're huge in comparison!

    • +2

Artificial diamonds are already here. They are about 1/3 the cost of mined diamonds.

Prices won't drop further as the jeweller still needs to cut and present a diamond, and they still want to make the same markup they did with mined diamonds

    • +7

DeBeers hasn't been able to effectively manipulate market prices for quite a while lol.

They control only ~30% of the global diamond supply as of 2019, and have been steadily losing market share since the 90s. Why?
      * A) Currently, with the exception of one mine in Canada, all are in South Africa, Namibia or Botswana. Namibia and Botswana have joint 50-50 partnership in all operations and can sell diamonds independently of DeBeers, thus reducing market share.
      * B) BHP Billiton was able to challenge De Beer's by opening up major mines in Canada.
      * C) De Beers used to have a contract for distribution of Russian Diamonds with Ex-Soviet now Russian group Alrosa, but this contract was torn up in 2009 due to EU anti-monopoly laws. In short, they lost near-exclusive distribution rights to Russian diamonds. Alrosa is now the biggest producer of diamonds in the world and can distribute their own product.
      * D) Rio Tinto no longer uses De Beers as its diamond distributor. Since the 90s all Argyle diamonds are sold through different distributors.

Natural diamond prices are increasing because of demand from China and India, increased awareness of blood diamonds and efforts to stop it, and we've not found economically viable kimerberlite pipes to mine for a very long time. Don't get me wrong, they're unarguably the historic cause of toxic marketing campaigns to artificially inflate their value, and have effectively acted both in cartel agreements and as a monopoly in the past. These days their influence has given way to an actual growing scarcity and increased demand from emergent Asian markets.

  • Haagen-Dazs. Even half price at Woolies is too much so I've replaced it with Bulla when it's half price. I've also dropped potato chips off my weekly purchase (only ever bought one pack per week to munch on while watching Richmond games) and I've learned to live without fish & chips at my local at my local joint which has risen to $26. Everything else has stayed the same.

    • +7

this is a big call i agree it is a rip off but if you 'love' ice cream Bull isnt close to as good as Haagen-Dazs

      • +1

True but it is still not bad. I have also recently gotten on to their NZ brand (can't remember the name) but it is bloody amazing and cheap

Try Coles Irresistible Vanilla Bean, or Salted Caramel Icecream. You're welcome :-)

    • +1

I haven't tried Haagen-Dazs or know the ingredients, but just ice cream in general, there is a considerable difference from eating a Bulla/Streets Peter to a more expensive brand, literally just how much more cream or contents you're getting, most of the cheaper ones is whipped full of air, and you're just eating a lot of air these days.

      • +1

I think you're being a bit unfair to Bulla. They make real ice cream (Creamy Classics) from fresh cream and whole milk. Streets and Peter are the low-grade stuff.
