"however I'd only recommend the shirts that 95% or more cotton. many of the shirts are 60:40 cotton: polyester blend."

I'm no shirt expert though wouldn't this be to wrinkle less?

    • +1

      I live in QLD

I suspect this line in the OP's post was not a non-sequitur, but a reminder that the blend is a reflection of how well / badly the fabric breathes, and hence how sweaty you get when wearing it.

      • yes

    • +3

60:40 blends feel softer, are a bit warmer, and wrinkle less than 100% cotton.
It's actually a nice blend because it also wicks sweat more than 100% cotton so it also feels less wet if you sweat a lot.
      It's a catch-22 as 'mericans say.

      • +6

        It's a catch-22

That's not Catch 22 at all. You just made the case that 60:40 bland is better in every way so how is that catch 22?

        • +6

Yeah but I think I'd rather a natural material against my skin all day long then plastic.

        • +2

100% cotton does breath better and is cooler but lacks the properties mentioned above.

      • +2

        It's a catch-22 as 'mericans say.

I know Catch-22 is an American novel, but is it really an American expression? I reckon it's used in many English speaking countries.

I haven’t worn polyester since my dear departed mum made me wear a pastel blue safari suit.

      • +4

I hope your mum's departure is not connected to your safari.

What fit for a short guy with a bit of a gut - shirts constantly bust open on my gut.

      Relaxed fit.

Get the relaxed fit my good sir.

  • +5

    Just a heads up.

Van Heusen shirts are not what they used to be.

You can expect the collar to begin tearing a few months after buying

    • +1

      also, quite thin fabric
nice if you like it, not so if you don't

      • +1

        Yeah, very thin

It’s a shame.. They used to be a great work shirt

    • +1

And they were never great to begin with. Any maker who uses cotton-poly is already very average.

  • I ordered from them end of last year and not all the shirts fit the same. Some fit well some were a bit tight. All sizes the same and all slim fit.

  • +2

    Good deal.

Agreed on avoiding polyester, but mostly because microplastics are getting into our water, and there's growing evidence that plastic clothing is bad for your health… Cotton being more breathable is a bonus.

    • +2

The cotton is really hard to iron though. Nightmare!

      • +1

Fair enough. I don't really have that issue because I only use dress shirts to reenact Risky Business.

        • LMAO! I hate pure cotton in general. The OXFORD brand organic cotton is by far the WORST. Those shirts are impossible iron. I had to throw a few away as I was convinced that it took 10 minutes of ironing per shirt to get it wrinkle free. Even the seat belt leaves massive wrinkles on them.

          • +1

@Naigrabzo: They probably use crappy cotton both farmed and milled in China.

Decent cotton grown in Egypt, Cali or the Caribbean and then milled from one of the established mills in Europe will last a lot longer, and if you hate wrinkles/ironing a mill that uses a good non/low-formaldehyde treatment will look great and breathe so much better.

Sure you won’t get such a shirt for $25, but you also won’t buy as many of them in the long-run.

            • @SolitaryMan: Actually Australian cotton is the highest rated after ginning. Production uses latest varieties, consistent runs in volume and less contaminants.

              • +1

@entropysbane: Not for shirting it’s not. Extra Long Staples like Giza 45, Giza 87 and Supima and Long Staple Sea Island are the most sought after.

Edit: either way, better than cotton/poly or Chinese.

but mostly because microplastics are getting into our water

      eh?

Ocean waste almost entirely a problem of developing countries, mostly in Asia dumping their waste into rivers and oceans etc. How does you not wearing a shirt solve that?

      • +1

The vast majority of ocean plastic is caused by fishing, which takes place around Australia as well, due to all the fishing nets, lines, etc. But that's total plastic. Microplastics from polyester clothing is a big problem everywhere, even inland waterways where there is little fishing.

"Today scientists estimate that textiles produce 35% of the microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans (in the form of synthetic microfibers), which would make textiles the largest known source of marine microplastic pollution."
        - NY Times

Not to mention the growing evidence that plastic, including polyester on your skin, screws with our hormones.

I'm not going shirtless, and I still have quite a bit of polyester clothing, I'm just choosing natural fibres, e.g. cotton, more and more.

        • +2

The vast majority of ocean plastic is caused by fishing

          Nope: https://ourworldindata.org/ocean-plastics

80% from poor waste disposal mostly from Asia, 20% from fishing.

And 81% of the 80% is China the Philippines and Indonesia.

          • @1st-Amendment: Sorry, I misspoke. The biggest source of large ocean plastics is fishing equipment. The overwhelming majority of ocean plastics, though, are microplastics.

I'm not surprised that Asia produces 80% of the world's microplastics. I bet it produces about 80% of the world's polyester too.

It doesn't really matter where the polyester is coming from, polyester is still putting plastic into our environment, which is then entering your food chain (especially if you eat fish) or is just being absorbed directly into your skin.

If you're implying that Asia causes most of the pollution thus we can continue polluting, then that's illogical…

            • @besttraveltech:

It doesn't really matter where the polyester is coming from

It does if you're want to solve the problem. You can wear all the cotton shirts and use all the paper straws you like and it won't amount to a hill of beans unless you fix the source. And the source of the two largest environmental issues are both tied to poor environmental management in Asia.

              If you're implying…

I wasn't. I was merely highlighting that if there is a problem that needs to be solved, then you can't just ignore the elephant in the room, exactly like we do with CO2 and China (again)…

  • +2

I typically wear a 41 92 shirt, and they don't have any 92 sleeve sizes. They have one shirt in 41 94, and six in 42 94.

    Even their 6'2" model is wearing a 41 90 shirt that's too short in some photos like this one (that seems suspiciously hidden below two blank photos);

    https://www.vanheusen.com.au/classic-relaxed-fit-shirt-solid…

    • Yeah - I wear a 41x94 and there's nothing coming up in the classic fit.
Otherwise I'd have gone for this.

  • Not bad, still a decent range of sizes etc.

  • Just be careful. I filtered the size and cut (tailored fit) and then ordered four shirts. Three are slim fit and one classic fit. When I review the order there is no details to confirm the cut ordered. I expect the search filter doesnt really work and I wasnt paying attention.

  • I've got 4 shirts in my cart and the promo code successfully applied. But I can't checkout. It gets stuck after choosing the delivery option and I can't input my payment details. Anyone else having the same issue?

    • It was slow to respond, but I got through eventually. Overloaded webserver it seems.

  • +1

I'm amazed Van Heusen is still around with the shit quality they pump out. Then I remember YD and Tarocash are still around too.

    • +3

Van Heusen is OK as a basic work shirt, YD and Tarocash are more of your court date appearance type garbage when your normal eshay-wear won't be good enough to get you off the charges.

  • Is there any way to know which shirt is included in the 4 for $100 sale? I chose 4 shirts then apply the code but total is still close to $200

    • Had to use trial and error method which is quite frustrating.

  • Great shirts. Get the Easy Care ones which are polyester blends. Easiest shirts around to wear on the odd office days. Put them in a washing bag and chuck them in the washing machine on slow spin. They come out 80% close to an iron'ed shirt.

  • +1

These used to be nice shirts, but they did drop in quality when I last bought one like 8 years ago, dread to think now.

I recall these being quite nice if you can get em.

Mind you, who wears business shirts in 2023? Thank god!

    • Haven't worn a shirt in years, I do love my cotton twill fitted shirts from TM Lewin though. Sad that the company has gone into business rescue twice since the pandemic started.

      • And shut all their stores globally. Their range in certain areas is shrinking, doesn’t look good for them.

I haven’t bought a shirt from them in ages, and the quality and designs really dropped off over the years (originally in around 2003-2008 as they started opening stores on every corner of every city in London) and gradually since then, but they were my gateway into proper shirts 20 years ago. They used to have some amazing cloths from what looked to be Thomas Mason, but can’t do that when you’re running constant 4 shirts for 100 quid promotions. I also assume cloth prices went through the roof with Albino and Zegna buying up mills.

      • Oh yeah that might be the brand I was thinking of.

I hate cheap fabric, there's was def nice.

      • I bought a whole stack of TM Lewin shirts just before the pandemic. I've hardly worn any of them.

  • +1

more expensive but 25% off CT shirts ($50 for business shirts) at the moment as well with a large range of sizings.

    https://www.charlestyrwhitt.com/au/mens-shirts/#cm_sp=HP-Her…

i havent bought any from CT since the great old bulk buy days with free postage but they have held up great.

    • I’ve never gotten into them since their sizes never fit me, but this is where people should look - CT and other Jermyn St makers are miles ahead of Van Heusen in terms of quality, comfort and design.

      • Their sizing is a bit weird because of the way they size the chest. The slim fit isn't very slim at the waist, but the extra slim is ridiculously small around the chest.

        • Their sizing is definitely a bit off, I tried various sizes some years back in their Jermyn St store and couldn’t get anything that fitted me well. The same goes for MJBale, designed for different model types, and the regular/slim/fitted just adjusts the measurements but in the same ratios.

MJBale’s trousers for instance seem designed for front rowers who cycle and do squats for eight hours a day.

If you're new you also get a $20 discount (which adds back the $7.95 delivery as under $100, add an extra shirt - 5 shirts for $105)

    • OP should add this to the post

  • Bought a bunch of these a couple months back during a similar sale. I had a few slim mediums so thought I'd just stock up on different slim mediums. Had to return a bunch cause some were too tight/uncomfortable/fit weird etc.

Still, they're the only shirt I wear to the office. Can't find a decent shirt these days for a fit/muscular build

    • Just grow a gut like the rest of us and you'll be golden

    • Humblebrag? :-)

  • How’s their return policy?
Do they have store fronts? I’ve got some of their shirts from 10 years ago that I’m still using. Back in office a bit now, skeptical on sizing.

May have to try them on again at DJ/Myers

    • Free returns and quick to process the refund (same day it was received I think).

      • Thank you. Will put through an order!

  • very limited options for slim fit…. a bit disappointed

  • They only have 90 and not 92…

How does Van H compared to Calvin Klien?

  • Anyone order direct from overseas to get better quality shirts at cheaper prices?
