These are not even comparable to Samsung endurance

    • In the words of the infamous Pauline Hanson please explain.

      • Quicker to fail

        • Ahhh yes, when you need the SD card in your motion capturing bird feeder to last hundreds of years, instead of just 50.

The Samsung PRO Endurance cards (and Sandisk MAX Endurance cards) are great for many use cases, but total overkill for others.

          • @Prong: So the SanDisk high endurance is not as good as the samsung cards?

            • @sintro: Yes - the Samsung card will last longer, though cost more. It's just for many uses the extra time it will last is entirely pointless.

They rate them in hours of video recording at FHD. (26 Mb/s)

The below is for 256GB cards. Smaller cards have last fewer hours. It's proportional, so half for the below times for 128GB etc.
If you record at higher or lower bitrates then they will last a shorter or longer time.

Sandisk High Endurance (this deal) = 20,000 hours.
Sandisk MAX Endurance = 120,000 hours.
Samsung Pro Endurance = 140,000 hours.

26 Mb/s is a reasonable bitrate for a 4K dashcam, or a dual camera dashcam depending on your settings.

If for example you have a dashcam and use it 2 hours a day, every day, then 20,000 hours means the card will last 27 years.
If you record 8 hours a day, then 6.8 years.
If you record 24 hours a day, every day, then it will last 2.28 years.

In contrast, if you record 24/7 with the Samsung card, then you get 16 years. (~14 with the Sandisk MAX endurance)

So the higher endurance isn't super useful unless you are recording a lot of hours (or higher bitrates) or are using a smaller capacity card.

For some dashcams or other uses (such as security cameras) you could easily double the bitrate (52 Mb/s) and thus halve the hours it will last.
So in such cases (or even higher bitrates) then the higher endurance cards are well worth the extra cost.

              • @Prong: so high endur card only means more write/read but doesn't actually make them more "durable" ?

my definition of durable would be corruption resistance. had few EVO cards went protection mode from my tablet. mainly for picture/video storage (but constantly synced with my PC folder). i wonder if it was the read/write frequency vs the quantity.

                • +1

@Hornpub: Endurance refers to the number of write cycles the SD card can handle without failures. So basically how much data can be written to the card overall. Each time data is written, each memory cell wears a little.

Other durability factors are the same - for example Samsung rate the Evo Plus and the Endurance Pro the same for temp, water immersion, drop rating etc.

In your case, if you setup was constantly rewriting data on the card, then it could have worn it out. But there is not enough information to tell.
If it did enter protection mode because there was too much wear, then yes, a high endurance card would last longer.

  • Had one in my dash cam, and being U3 one in my phone for 3 years now.

About time I replace them before they fail; but so far, they haven't.

This line, and the "pro" line are the only sandisk cards ive had luck with.

    • i wish dual SD card dashcam exist. i trust 2 normal card than 1 pro card when it comes to fail safe chance.

  • What do you recommend for security cameras and cheapest price.
