  • hmm tempted to upgrade my 11years synology because it cant decode x265 and only has usb 2.0 port…
currently has 4 x 4TB hdd, using around 7TB of it.. i just dont know how i can put that 7TB temporarily if i get this Terra.. i dont want to buy 8TB HDD …4x4TB is enough for me now (with RAID1 system)

    • Make a raid with two disks. Then copy the data. Then extend the RAID to include more disks.

      • but all the existing 4x disks has data on it (with SHR - synology own raid system )

You should have a level of redundancy?

          • @Jazza2400: Redundancy is not equal to a backup

You're better off to have a backup as opposed to redundancy.

            • @Matt86: No I mean when they transfer data across they might get away with pulling one drive out first

    • Not sure if you can, but worthwhile investigating, to run Xpenologoy on the Terramaster… In which case you could the HDDs with shr in it.
(But I have never tried that, just giving it as a possible option)

      • Yes if the same synology i can just move all disk (theoretically)

These are good for basic NAS stuff but if you are at all a tinkerer you will hit it's limitations in no time.

  • Is it good as a Plex server?
Would it be better than my NVIDIA shield with usb hard drives plugged in, in terms of responsiveness?

  • Likewise would like to know if this can handle being a 4k plex server

  • A noob question .. but can anyone advise if one of these boxes would be better than what I am currently using now purely for watching movies, sorry but I know nothing about NAS
I have a old Dell Studio 540 desktop with Windows 10, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @ 3.00GHz Processor, 8GB ram and 3 x WUH721818ALE6L4 (18TB HDD's) with only 3TB to spare. Desktop lives in a separate room and connected via ethernet to router which is then accessible by all other household members.
