    • Ryzen* Zen 3 7000 series

Almost perfect, if only it was the higher res OLED panel. Price is great though.

    • Even 1440p @ 90Hz would make a world of difference!

    • tbh i would rather the extended battery life than a higher res

      • This.

  • Hows the brightness on the screen? Would this be considered bright?

    • Yes very bright for a laptop.

    • +10

Exceptionally so. Battery annihilatingly bright. In an office about 200/250nits is good. In the shade about 300-400nits seems decent.

Not sure what you do with 600nits. Blind aeroplane pilots as they fly overhead presumably.

      • +1

        It's really just for HDR

  • +2

Would be instabuy if it was a 7640U. Here's wishful thinking those will hit the market around these prices.

    • +1

      Yeah ..that's the one I'm waiting! ;)

  • is this faster than i7 12th gen?

    • +1

Per watt yes. So it depends which i7 it is.

    • +3

Yes in performance per watt. The main issue with 12th gen is the P core, E core complication. Also 12th gen needs have a higher TDP to function, or performance tanks below 64w, which kills battery life. If you want to use a device as a laptop which doesn't need to be plugged in throughout the day Ryzen is better.

This will easily beat a U series 12th gen.

      • Agree. I'm really tired or this shitty and noisy i7 12th. Always hot and always fan spinning….and of course making battery not great!…. But can't complain too much I got the Intel Nuc 15 laptop for $989 ;)

        • I have the Intel NUC M15 with 11th gen i7. it's cool and silent.

          • @mantichoral: i have the M15 i7 12th…. minimum 65 degrees at all times….and when plugged in it's always with fans spinning even with minimal work…

            • @MarioBros: You could try BiOS and driver updates, and see if that helps.

              https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19731/intel…

              • @mantichoral: i did. Everything is up to date….still no improvements….

                • @MarioBros: Other than latest BIOS, there's not much I can suggest.

                  https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19683/bios-…

Informed dvice on ozb was that 12th gen Intel mobile processors would be poor, so I'm glad I got the older 11th gen i7.

However, I needed the driver pack to stop presence detection from locking my laptop after a minute, and installing the audio driver updates reduced microphone sensitivity to unusable - on ongoing issue showing the limits of Intel's Community Support people in providing useful accurate technical help.

                  • @mantichoral: Oh, and the BIOS fan settings are described here. I've never had to experiment with them. good luck!

                    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000…

                    • @mantichoral: Although, thinking about it, the Intel M15 NUC was designed for and around the 11th gen processors and their thermal envelopes. If Intel just shoved in a 12th gen processor without redesigning the thermals and reconsidering the changed TDP for 12th gen… you may not be able to do anything about heat and fans.

I wonder if other 12th gen users have the same problem.

This is the problem that MacBook on Intel had been struggling with for years, why they ran lagging processors but still ran hot in their thin cases, etc.

        • from a comment on your model elsewhere on ozbargain:

seconding what @sagrgar said, fan goes crazy for nothing and runs very hot. Seems to be a common issue and the solution for the fans is to turn off Turbo Boost in the BIOS (F2 when starting up the laptop to get to this menu, then Advanced I think).

Note: max memory is 16GB according to ASUS.com

  • Are these zen 4 silicon?

    • +5

      No Zen 3.

      Zen 3:
      7530
      7730

      Zen 3+:
      7535
      7735

      Zen 4:
      7640
      7840

  • I know these are different laptops, with different form factors, but purely on specs alone, would this or this laptop be better. It's for the missus just for general everyday use, word processing, life admin, browsing etc. I assume this laptop is a newer release than the Lenovo?

    • +1

For general everyday usage the laptop in your link is fine. If you want something better, this deal is an option for content creation and viewing due to a much better CPU and OLED screen.

    • For your usage, you can go even go even cheaper lol. The only thing that newer devices do for you is better battery life. If she's using it at home or office most of the time, she can get an old office laptop for 400 and it's more than sufficient.

  • Trying to understand 'dual channel RAM, single slot'. Is that 16GB soldered + 1 slot available for upgrade?

    • As far as I can tell these come with 8GB onboard, so the spare slot is likely filled with 8GB.

Interestingly, the USB-C port doesn’t support Alt-Mode, so you can’t use it for a display.

How are these OLEDs in terms of burn in?
