  • benchmark performance stats pretty strong for the price

it’s actually slow af similar to my realme c3

spend 250 get a used iPhone SE, quadruple your single core performance, don’t think ppl realize how behind android is price/perf

      thank me later

      • +2

you sure this has similar slow af soc as your realme c3 ?

        Dimensity 700 (7nm) vs Helio G70 (12nm)

        • Saw geekbench 6 single core 400ish? that’s what my c3 was

          could be wrong

se 2020 is like 1600 lol it’s so much faster trust me, only the batter life is probably 4x less too

          • @abctoz: The Apple iPhone SE 2020 (iPhone SE 2) Geekbench single-core score is 1,321.

            Vivo Y55 5g is 567.

any way to work out which stores have stock?

  • +1

Bought the unlocked Y33s recently with 5 band GPS for bike trekking. Dual SIM and great battery life once you kill off the Vivo bloatware. Under rated handsets. Cracker price for 5G Telstra users.

    Any cheap ways to unlock?

Just call them if u have plans with T

    • Look on xda forums for a root?

      • Vivo website has a stock ROM. Does that help?

  • +1

Does this work with Aldi/Boost/Belong SIMs without unlocking?

    • Any sub net provider who using T’s network

    • Boost yes Aldi and belong can hit and miss

      • What about Woolworths?

        • +2

Woolworths is another Telstra MVNO just like Aldi and Belong, so it should be in exactly the same boat. (Whether that boat is yes or no, I can't say)

Boost is different because it's actually just rebranded full Telstra.

    • Mate didn’t work on my Telstra phone

Now, THIS is a bargain, not that garbage nokia in the other deal. This benchmarks more than 3 times better than the other piece of pure junk for not a lot more in price.

    • How does that translate to basic browsing/ messaging / calls / basic apps?

      Dont need a gaming phone.

      • +1

My point is if that's all you need, why spend 80 on that other one? Just get a cheap $29 el crappo. This one will run very responsively with tasks you throw at it, the other one will be painfully slow for anything OTHER than calls and texts. So i dont really understand the point of the $80 Nokia, like who's it for? If you want basic you can get cheaper, and if you arent using it for pure basic it is SO slow as to be painful.

        • Right, might try cancelling click n collect and reordering this one. The Nokia was the cheapest NFC phone with all network bands (up tp 4G) that I have seen though? $29 phones are normally 2gb ram, Optus specific, no NFC.

          • @tunzafun001: Hey i dont want to talk you out of the other deal if you are happy with it, if it was me personally i would be jumping on this one well before even considering the other one tho. Even if you dont need it for gaming it's gonna run way, way smoother.

I just upgraded from an Oppo A52 to a Redmi 10C and i cannot believe the difference in performance. Things like using Google maps to check where im going and then camera and then media player etc are so smooth on the redmi, anything like that was painful on the Oppo. And that Oppo even benchmarks wayyyy better than the Nokia in the other deal. I genuinely shudder to think how painful it must be to use. It isn't just about gaming but just general tasks that you would use while moving about.

            • @Iggemo: Just saw the cybershack review below. Seems the frequencies are 'iffy'. Definitely need a phone with decent country reception. Seems this Mediatek setup might not be the go afterall. Now to see if the Nokia is any better.

As for app speed. Cant for the life of me work out why the Hungry Jacks app runs so slloowwwwww.

              • @tunzafun001: Update - the Nokia seems equally bad in terms of reception. Pretty sure you can change a setting somewhere to beef it up (at the expense of battery life).

          Update.. update…

Ordered both…both got cancelled…good ole Coles..

    • Yeah, this should be pretty good. Recently got a Samsung A22 in a $199 deal and this looks to be comparable spec wise, down to the same processor. This has the advantage of NFC too that the Samsung doesn’t.

Won’t blow your socks off but for browsing and basic app use it keeps up well enough.

For $124 this is a great deal given what the Samsung went for, which itself is still a good price IMO.

      • Not saying antutu is gospel but it benchmarks this phone @ 360 (which is absolutely fantastic) and the Samsung A22 @ 200. They aren't even remotely close.

        • My bad, the model I got was the A22 5G, not the 4G model. The 5G has the same Mediatek MT6833 Dimensity 700 as the Y55 and is a fair bit faster than the 4G model.

    • the question is, how do you get it unlocke

      • try rom4rom?

  • Dual Sim?

    • Network locked phones are never dual sim.

  • Alot of people on gsmarena are saying that NFC is not supported?

    • +1

What i find with a lot of phones that SAY they are NFC is that actually NFC is region-dependent.

      • Any idea of NFC works in Australia?

    • According to Telstra's specs, link below, it should

      NFC: Yes

  • 4gb RAM or 6gb RAM?

  • How is Telstra/Vivo for updates/support period?

From a quick search it looks like this may be on Android 13.

  • What is the fee to unlock this phone

    • +1

I have been trying to find a cheaper unlock for about 10 minutes, but this is all I can find thus far (Which isn't great)

      https://www.telstra.com.au/support/mobiles-devices/unlock-ph…

You can unlock your Telstra Pre-Paid mobile, iPhone or mobile broadband devices so they work on another network. If your service has been active for over two years, we don’t charge an unlocking fee, but if your service has been active for less than two years, we charge:

$80 for devices that have never been activated, or active for six months or less
$25 for devices activated for six months to two years

      • +1

        How about flashing the ROM?

      • The process isn't easy or automated. You call a number, and the rep isn't able to check how much you need to pay. I tried this and she asked what amount I wanted to pay, ($25 or $80). Then, the rep sends an email to the unlock team, and you just hope for the best. In my case I ended up receiving an unlock code for an A20 which I don't even own. So I am back to square one.

      • I bought one of these 4 months ago and paid the $80 to unlock. They never sent it and I requested a refund and they honoured it.

  • Can it be unlocked by following this instruction?

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/vivo-y55-5…

$117.80 with Officeworks price beat. Not stocked in store though, but free delivery.

    • have you successfully placed an order with officeworks? they are notoriously difficult at honouring price matches for online orders in my limited experience…

      • called them up, they will try fob you off, pushed back and said go read your own policy (ie officeworks stock is online not in store) and said I have to ring a national office number to get the price match but they aren't open on the weekend. So can try tomorrow 9AM/monday.

  • Coles OOS, couldn’t be added to cart

    • i was able to add to cart for delivery a moment ago

      • Done that, but got cancellation email in this morning

    • it works just now, fyi~

      • Isn’t shipping availability based on your local store or areas stock.

        • you can choose click and collect, I think they are restocking this item. Because I did see it is oos, and after a few munites, I can add to my trolley, and select a store.

          • @nowich: My experience is that both Woolies and Coles shipping, click and collect and in store are all specific to your store or location. So you may have the phone available for delivery or CnC but sydracing won’t, because your area has stock while theirs doesn’t.

I don’t believe for any options they manage stock centrally nor move stock to a store. Either your local area has stock and you can get the item, or your local stores don’t have it and you can’t. In the past I’ve found swapping between stores even within the same suburb changed what’s available in the apps catalog.

Maybe I’m wrong, but looking at past phone deals there seemed to be variation on a store by store basis.

    • Update, I placed delivery order successfully, but got cancelled by Coles in this morning

  • Apparently this phone has a poor antenna and therefore will have poor reception (and wifi speeds), so is not going to be good in rural situations. This made it a no-go for me.

    • What's the RAM 4 or 6?

    • Hey mate, could you install mtk engineering from playstore

      • Doesnt work for me. I get nothing, accepts the codes but doesnt load anything, clears the code….

        • Can you activate developer mode by clicking on setting > about phone > software > build number (click multiple times)

Input the code in the dialler.

Information source here https://mobilexfiles.com/ - ##3646633## or ##54298## - Engineering Mode (for smartphones based on MTK processor)

Enter those on the dialler and report back please

  • C&C Order cancelled, I don't think many stores have stock. The app doesn't seem to show stock availability.

    • Yes, mine is also canceled.

      • Anyone in NSW can confirm where they were able to successfully buy from?

        • I ordered yesterday and picked up from St Ives NSW.

Anyone had any success with an Aldi SIM working?

    • +1

      No It doesn't work… I Just tested, no luck…

      • Thanks for testing and replying

  • I have this phone. It is constantly crashing and there is no service centre anywhere on the Gold Coast. You have to pay to return it for warranty service. For the price I paid its not worth the cost for postage.

    • Please install mtk engineering or enter the above numbers on the dialler and report back please

      • i have telstra so i dont need to unstall anything

        • Okay that good but if you do the above you might be able to unlock bands that can make your phone use any network of your choice not just telstra.

          • @ChickenAdobo: only telstra works in my area. optus blows, and vodafail is worse than the string between two cups

            • +1

@eman resu: Why not do it for the OzB community … even if it bricks it doesnt sound like much of a loss But you have OzB Kudos for the effort! 🙃

              • @Wally: I've done you one better. Its a rubbish phone that crashes each time you open an app. So unless you like opening an app twice each time you want to use it, and have no option to fix it (no updates or after sales warranty) then get something else.

                • @eman resu: Have you tried resetting the phone? Vivo is a well-known brand in China, a competitor to Huawei and Xiaomi etc, so I think with this spec it could do a lot more

      • I have tried using both methods with no luck unfortunately!
