Things that don't need wifi #1092

    • +5

The benefits are there like pre heating using schedules and turning off on schedules. No need to pre-heat when no one is at home. Or when room temp is at a certain level.

      Each to their own really

    • +5

Incorrect. I have an electric blanket that is left in on position all the time and connected to a smart plug to turn it on and off.

It is set to automatically turn off at a certain time every night so if we accidentally leave it on that gets handled. It also lets us turn it on remotely if we are out, or without needing to interrupt a show or movie we are watching before bed.

It is not the most critical home automation device I've got, but as a quality of life improvement it is great.

      • I agree - mechanical old school switch with smart plug much better option than wifi enabled. Plus smart plug can be used for other things during summer.

        • One thing that I didn’t like about this solution is that if you want to turn it off in the middle of the night you have to use a phone, but (with a smart home automation platform) you could use a Zigbee button that you stick on your bedside table to turn it on and off.

As others have said, you still miss out on temperature controls though.

          • @Hargain Bunter: I've got a really nice dual zone Breville electric blanket that goes to a Y cable into a smart plug. It remembers temperature settings despite being a digital controller. I'm not sure I've changed the temperature since the first few nights of playing around to get it comfortable.

The smart plug solution at least means you can buy a nicer electric blanket rather than being tied to whatever they decide to stick a smart enabled controller on.

Also why can't you turn a smart plug on and off with a button on your bedside table? Tuya based stuff can be triggered from heaps of sources.

            • @Domingo: That does sound good. I would probably go for two smart plugs for individual controls though. Do you have a link to your one?

I think I was a bit clumsy with my wording. I meant that in the past I didn’t like this solution, but on further contemplation I could see a work around for my issue and you would need a Zigbee hub and common platform (such as Tuya) to link them together.

          • @Hargain Bunter: With home assistant, set a timer otherwise put a temp sensor in the bed with you :)

I’ve got one of these. A bit of feedback.

    Uses Tuya. Booo.
IIRC has basic home assistant integration (can turn on / off, can’t select which temperature you want - defaults to middle). This is probably fixable, maybe. I haven’t put any effort into it.
The controllers look and feel like they are from 1975.

But my biggest complaint is the plastic bit where cord enters the blankets is massive, hard and always seems to dig into you while you are using the blanket. So you will probably need some sort of topper over the top of it.

Overall, there aren’t many options for smart electric blankets, this and a Sunbeam, and the sunbeam I’ve several magnitudes more expensive. So this is probably ok for the money.

    • Tuya Booo

      Why?

    • Thanks for mini review. I would like to set temp and timer settings via home assistant so maybe not for me.

Currently have a smart plug which switches my electric blanket on for default 1 hour then have to manually extend the timer once in bed.

I just got one yesterday and have set it up with the LocalTuya Home Assistant integration. It can control on/off, heat level (low/med/high) and auto off 1-10 hours, it also has a sensor for auto off time remaining. I used this LocalTuya configuration to map the entities.

I agree the controllers are big and ugly, they’re also not very intuitive. To turn on or off you need to press then on/off button once to wake up the screen, then press and hold again. Each time you turn them on they default to medium heat and 1 hour auto off, so you need to adjust each time if that doesn’t suit you. The defaults can’t be changed through the Tuya app, but I’m thinking of automating that with Home Assistant if I keep them.

My main issue is that both controllers have an audible coil whine (high pitched squeaking) even when off (standby). My partner can’t hear it, but I can.

I’m curious if they all have coil whine or I just have a lemon. Do yours whine?

Thanks for the local Tuya tip.

I hadn’t played with it in HA for ages, so will give that a go.

I tend to use the mobile app all the time to turn it on / off, so had forgotten about the usability of the controller. I’m not sure who came up with that!

As for coil whine - mine doesn’t have that. Maybe you got a faulty one?

        • Interesting yours doesn’t. Thanks for letting me know.

      • Mine whine. Contemplating the smart plug option now which beats the point of even having a smart blanket.

Thanks for the local Tuya, will try that config later. The default Tuya ha integration does not seem to expose any entities

        • Thanks, good to get another data point with the whining.

Yeah LocalTuya exposes on/off, heat level, auto off time setting and auto off time remaining (sensor). It’s been quite reliable, but I think I’m going to send them back. Whine is too annoying. I’ll try out the Goldair which is also Tuya, is similar price and has multi zone (body/feet).

It's an absolute joke to mark up 300% just for WiFi.
A $10 smart plug on eBay will do the same job.

    • +1

Smart plug won't let you set temperature.

My issue with electric blankets is that nowadays the fabric that goes around the side and under the mattress is made out of a very stretchy mesh. Used to be made out of cotton. This is great for the manufacturers because they fit a wider range of mattress sizes/thicknesses. I found that it was moving around on my bed and scrunching up the bottom sheet and mattress topper. Even the expensive Sunbean ones were made like this. In the end, it irritated me so much I had to remove the mesh and make a cotton replacement. Took hours for the KS bed.

  • Imagine being hacked at night and being roasted to death by some mad hacker

No mention of fabric material or whether it's anti-bacterial.

    • I got one yesterday, the box says it’s polyester.

    • Hi,
It is Polyester & not anti-bacterial.
      Thank You

  • @Ron1977 this is a good price, but have you heard of these devices having coil whine, and do you know if it is only some or all units?

    • +1

Hi Thanks for your query, We sold approx 650 of these blankets last year, never had a complaint about coil whine, personally haven't used this blanket, I would say if one has it then all of units have it.

    • Mine whine. Partner can’t hear it, I can.

  • Have a Goldair “smart” one, and paid way too much for it! However love it! Have set up with Google Home and Alexa, so can turn on and off with voice commands. Also haven’t encountered any coil whining sounds.

    • Nice, cheers! It looks like Goldair use the Tuya platform, so you could integrate other Tuya based devices with your blanket (or just use one app for all Tuya products).

    • Hi again, I’m now thinking of going the Goldair route. I saw they have a couple of models, on with a zip-off mattress topper and one without.

Do you have either of those models? How long have you had yours?

    • +1

Also interested in Goldair option. Which model do you have and what are your thoughts on its performance/comfort?

Would look to integrate it with Home Assistant ideally otherwise Alexa controlled.
