Fact is, that's a complete myth.
Meh … 'myth', 'legend' … who's to say … were you there? Apparently life was so crap for some back then that they were itching to off themselves at the slightest provocation. There was also no 'life-line' to call back then, and anti-depressants were pretty thin on the ground too. Just sayin'.

Fun fact: the area southwest of London where the fictional Martian cylinders land is Horsell Common, so a lot of the early action would take place within 500 metres of the McLaren Technical Centre where they design, test and build their F1 cars.
