https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/768135 So $300 more for another 8GB of RAM? Damn that seemed steep.

If only there was a 16GB/512GB MBA M1 around this price

If only it was a M2 24gb / 1tb SSD at this price - not sure what you are getting at?

Because of this being the M1, the 256gb besides being small is nice and speedy.

      • +3

The SSD in the MBA can't be replaced. 512GB is a much better investment besides it doubles the lifespan given the nature of SSD.
Also, SSD slows down when its free space gets smaller.

I can live with 512, 256’s just a bit stupid

This is basically a school laptop. The kids all use One Drive these days so 256gB is fine.

Actually for that purpose 8GB RAM would be fine as well, pocket the difference.

      • I’m familiar with cloud storage.

You want a unit that’s good for a couple years of study use ok. Kind of assumes they’ll not have use for it outside of school. Cloud storage has limitations, external drive can solve these kinds of constraints but still far from ideal for a lot of people.

I make sure all my kids work is in the cloud. Far to easy for a kid to break the machine, and then Daaaad! Please help!

          • @entropysbane: Fair enough if it works for you.

My objection is in part on principle and for the life of the unit which’ll almost certainly be sold on at some point. It’s a largely inadequate baseline for such an otherwise very capably specced unit.

            • @0jay: True, Resale is a point for the future. Not sure it worth the extra 🍏$ up front.

            • @0jay: Not to mention that the OS+general software will take up a decent amount of space on it too.

$1619 on the Apple Education store, if you prefer not to use ebay or have Apple gift cards.

    $1689.99 for MacBook Air 13in with M2 chip 256GB & 8GB RAM

    • This is a far worse buy, as the low ram will page to the small ssd, which in the base model on that line is a single instead of two chips, halving its speed.
