was interested but the toners costs $500 to replace all 4 cartridges…..

    • +13

You can get third party toners. Much cheaper.

      • +2

        How much cheaper? Nevermind $90

      • won't the printer detect it as not genuine? My epson inkjet detects ink cartridges that are not genuine and prevents printing.

        • +3

My epson died when I used non-genuine cartridges.

          • @jv: Same. After a firmware update broke the ability to use third party cartridges. I was not impressed.

        • You buy the chip to replace the paper count. Have done it before. I can't vouch for print quality with third party toners, but it's good enough for me.

        • +3

I buy toners from sevenhills-ink on ebay for around $20. Their brother toner worked fine with their chip but I don't normally update my printer. When I did update, the generic toner stopped working so I ripped the chip off the genuine toner and replaced it into the generic toner and it's still printing fine

      • 3rd party is fine for black and white, but 3rd party colours are always horrible for me, it looks like crap. colours are very faint and watered down. it just doesn't have that boldness or pop of colour i want.

i agree with black toner, but colour leaves a lot to be desired.

    • +7

      Not if you buy non-genuine.

      What OzBargainer buys genuine?

      • +4

If they do. They will have to hand in their ozb badge.

        • +55

My ozB Badge is also counterfeit

          • +2

@dbmitch: I got original for free in a deal in exchange for rights to my soul. Jokes on them, i didn't have one.

        • +1

I paid more for the OZB badge than the genuine toners.

      • An OzBargainer who is serious about performance. Genuine toners are better, however whether they are $500 better is debatable.

        • +1

What are you doing, printing out photos to hang on your wall? Surely any old black will suit for emails and word docs.

Also, which brand, specifically, is"better"? That's a pretty broad statement.

Personally, I've never been able to detect any difference. The powder almost certainly comes out of the same Uyghur prison labour factories.

      • +1

Been using value print with good result, $255 for 5 toners
        https://www.valueprint.net.au/TN-251-TN-255-series-Brother-L…

Edit: Just saw someone posted $90 Kogan for all 4 colours.

      • I sure do when getting genuine for same or cheaper than non-genuine price. Have been able to score as little as $20 bucks for 1 colored tonner

        • Link or didn't happen.

          • -1

@bio: plenty on marketplace/gumtree LoL after an item is sold link is no longer there hope you are sensible enough to know that

            • +2

@USER DC: Fair point. You didn't mention marketplace/gumtree in your original post, though.

    • +7

5 seconds of looking online i found this for $90: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/office-catch-4-pack-brother-tn-…

    • +13

i have this printer from a previous deal and buy aftermarket toners from here (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264134879121?hash=item3d7faa6791…), so much cheaper only $57.50

      • Thanks for this. I’ve been buying genuine, thankfully work pay!

      • Thanks for sharing, it will save me a fortune.

    • -2

Cartridges last for ages though and don’t clog like laser can. I have this printer and it’s been great. Get oem cartridges and you’ll be laughing.

      • +8

        Think you mean ink

        • -7

          What??

            • +9

@Lululuke: You should have put ink, not 'laser'… read your first line again. I didn't neg though.

            • +1

@Lululuke: ATangk is correct - you should have said laser toner cartridges don't clog like ink can.

            • +8

@Lululuke: Can't even read his own post. Complete snowflake

      • +1

This is laser printer right? How much per page?

      • $49 for all 4 carts delivered… Winner!

    • These colour lasers are probably less efficient, but my Brother black and white went for 5+ years without needing a replacement. Lasers are so much more efficient than inkjets.

  • +5

I thought the whole idea of laser printers was the toners were much cheaper and last for ages?

    • If you buy non-oem toners it is.

    • Cheaper in the long run. The Bk prints over 1000 pages, it’s cheaper initially but lasts ages.

    • +14

It’s usually cheaper overall, and it’s also waterproof, so a drop of rain or coffee doesn’t wreck it.

But for my money the main benefit is that the first page you print after three months of break will come out perfectly. I print infrequently, so my inkjet experience was always filled with nozzle cleans, reprints, and general fiddling around just to get a couple of good clean prints every few weeks. Lasers just work

  • +1

Does this model have scanning function?
Clicking the link, there is a picture seems to have it, but no description says it does.

    • +2

      no scanner

    • -5

Are you talking about the photo with it open showing the cartridge replacement? If so, LOL.

    • +3

Nah you need to get the model up think 3750cdw

  • +2

Great deal. I bought one of these about three years ago and the toner still shows as full, and it's never had a hitch.

  • have used non-genuine hp cartridges and completely ruined my printer. I think its the chip in them, too smart these days.

    • +19

I'd suggest Brother cartridges next time.

      • +1

I guess technically Brother is a non genuine hp 😺

    • +6

That’s because HP makes garbage these days

    • +4

How much force did you use to get the HP cartridges into a brother laser printer?

    • HP. I'm sorry you were stupid enough to buy that overpriced junk

  • +1

    Recommendations on an A3 version?

    • Brother inkjets are pretty good. A3 lasers are too expensive.

  • +3

Be careful. Brother has turned evil like all of the other printer companies and are now blocking non-genuine toner. I dunno if this model is impacted, but DYOR.
    https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/s9b2eg/brother_mf…

    • +5

Someone commented earlier in the other thread saying you can unscrew the chips from a genuine toner and screw it to the after-market one and it would still work.

    • Does it automatically update the firmware itself, or you need to manually select some option in the Brother app in the OS (Windows or Mac or mobile)? If it requires the update to be triggered from the user then we can just ignore it, can't we?

      • +1

For the business grade stuff it will auto update if it can get to internet, dunno about this model. Also a good chance it will come with the locked down firmware from the factory now.

      • +1

I have a slightly different model, but it's manual updates from the webui and reminders in the app. You can ignore them

    • +8

If you look on the Internet you can find an archive with the older Brother firmwares. Don't bother downgrading the main firmware revision (since new hardware revisions may need newer main firmware), but downgrade the SUB1 firmware to 1.58. That should let you use third party cartridges. You may need Brother's BRAdmin tool to do this.

Also: firmware checking (and the ability to apply updates) can be disabled in the web admin interface.

    • +1

Agree with this. Don't know anything about this printer, but I had one that needed the chip replacement with the toner replacement. It was annoying. Half the time the printer seemed to detect the chip wasn't right, and would instantly set the toner to 0%. That chip would become unusable. It meant I had to have backup chips ready (different for each colour) as well as backup toners. The printer would also say the toner was empty when there was heaps left. So each aftermarket toner required at least two chips. Moved to a printer without the chips, and while my printer has been telling me my toner is low for a long time, it keeps going and going.

  • bought one today, price match with Officeworks. even I already had a Brother mono muti function printer.

  • This is very tempting, but i print so little that i'm not sure if i'd get real value out of it. I just like the idea of not having to worry about ink drying out, which does eventually add up as you keep replacing ink.

    • Same here, we basically print less than 20 pages a year. But whenever I do need to print, the ink is always low on the cannon.

Would be nice to have something reliable and maybe even have a scanner

      • I can vouch for this printer for low volume printing: I bought it about 2 years ago for low quantity printing. I did a similar amount of pages per year (maybe even less) and would often find the ink had clogged or completely dried out. It seemed stupid to buy new ink each time I needed to print. Or worse still: Buy a new inkjet new printer and throw the old one out because that was the cheaper option.

Toner doesn't dry out or clog like ink, and lasts ages. I print mostly black, but it's nice to have the colour option when needed. I've only had to replace the toner once with a 3rd party one which works great and only cost around $19.

Now that my kids and wife have started to use it too and we've maybe gone to 100-150 pages a year, it's been even more worth it

I would definitely buy another laser, and probably the same model, if this one happened to die

  • +1

Excuse my ignorance, but would it not be better to buy a multi function printer with the eco tank refills?

    • If you know any that accept OEM cartridges how much would that go for? Then compare cost per page and there you have your answer.

      • +1

You don't need oem cartridges the genuine bottles of ink are fairly cheap.

        • +1

Dude at JB said print one copy of colour per month and the ink tanks and the heads should work fine for years… You can buy non genuine inks also.

    • +1

Eco tank printers have a counter. Once you hit that they won't print and you'll see messages like "Service Required” or "Ink Pad End Of Service Life Error" (well ahead of a physically full ink pad, which has been made difficult to get to and replace on purpose). There is no official software to reset it. Some models and software versions have been reverse engineered but usually by shady small players and running that software is a risk.

Eco tank could have been so much better than cartridges, but then how would they sell you a new printer every 3 years?

All this e-waste needs to be regulated. Products should by default use user servicable consumables like batteries, ink and toner, without artifically limiting how long they can last. Laptops that are upgradable and modular should be the default, not something exotic that Linus Sebastian invests in. The current state of affairs where companies engage in shenanigans to limit reuse and economical repair is an absolute farce.

    • Every time I go to use my ECO tank they're buggered, so I throw the printer out and buy another. Not so ECO.

  • Umart have it at a higher price for c&c in Victoria will office works still price match?

    • +2

Just price matched in VIC $236.55 price beat

      • Thanks! I went on the basis of your comment and they did it for me too. Will be nice not having to go to to my office or to officeworks everytime I want to print something!!!

  • Any recommendations on similar (Brother) laser printers, but B&W only, and preferably with A3 printing ability?

  • +4

I bought a laser printer with spare non genuine toner cartridges thinking i may not find cartridges that cheap once the included cartridges run out (they're often not full as you know). A year later i needed them and they didn't work! Too late to complain, but fortunately amazon had similar budget toner so cheap i expected problems. I got them as i can always return them, but they worked fine.

Lesson learned is don't order spare cartridges immediately.

Just got one and have unpackaged. It's running v1.37 firmware which from my reading is good as v1.55 and earlier seem to take generic toner cartridges. To make sure I don't stuff up, I want to disable firmware upgrades, but can't see the option to turn it off? Does anyone know where the setting is?

    • From umart or officeworks?

    • +1

      I just updated to 1.38
You can turn it off on the web admin page.
http://YOUR-PRINTER-IP/ login with the password at the back of your printer
      Here's a screenshot https://imgur.com/a/Y4zeV4y

      • Ah, thank you. Thats great!!

@justtoreply - got it from Amazon.

      • I just got mine. However, mine doesn't give me an option to disable the firmware update. via the web admin console. Can anyone tell me If I were to upgrade this to 1.38, will I still be able to use those after markets toners? If version 1.38 still works and it will give me an option to disable firmware update, I'll upgrade it to this to be able to disable firmware update in the future.

        • Yeah I want to do this too. Mine is on 1.37. Will it only update if I do it manually? As in no auto-update? If I check do I get to choose to install, or is it forced?
Is there any advantage to upgrading?

        • in 1.38 there is a rollback firmware option. Not sure what that means though
          https://imgur.com/a/3toJci8

          • @starcub: But does 1.38 still let you use after market toner though?

  • How do people find the speed of the wireless connectivity when printing from Windows or via AirPrint? Our current Brother MFC-J1300DW is super slow at connecting and receiving print jobs. Wondering if this will be a good replacement if it's quicker to process the prints. We have a mesh network at home so don't think it's anything to do with our own wifi

    • +1

I bought one off amazon a few days ago. takes about 10secs to print normal documents. Maybe inline pics would be slower.

Note - its only 2.4Ghz wifi, not 5GHz. That shouldnt be an issue for most people.

honestly after years of inkjet hassles, this thing is a great. Would be good to get an MFC for scanning but I might just keep my inket MFC in the garage for the occasional scan. Most of the time I just use my phone document scanner, which is fine but not excellent quality.

  • +2

I have this printer, it's great. Note the "24 pages per minute" is for black and white only, colour is dramatically slower. It's hardly a problem though, if you want high speed volume printing for a business then you're not looking down this end of the budget spectrum.

  • -4

I need an affordable one with scanner. Doesn't have to be laser.

  • I've had mine for a few years, but over the past year or so, the colour has become very washed out and 'incorrect' (hue or something looks off), even when using new (aftermarket) toners. Anyone else had the same and know a fix?

I did factory reset, turned off all the colour corrections and whatnot and nothing's changed.

  • Colour laser so much nicer than inkjet. I have both. Brother A3 inkjet and scanner - very handy to be able to print large sheets and scan a book splayed out, plus a cheapo Kyocera colour laser for really nice crisp A4, which I use a little more sparingly.

  • Is anyone having an issue with Airprint? If so, any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Both printer and my ipad are on the same SSID, I can access the web interface via my browser. However, when trying to find the printer via my ipad print option, it keeps on saying 'printer not found'.

I'm using Asus Merlin firmware router.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just had OW price beat and ordered over the phone - delivery due next Tues. Looking forward to the upgrade over our 2 year old Brother INKvestment printer that got us through covid and home schooling that now decides randomly whether it wants to print wirelessly or not.
