Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813P Chronograph ("Panda"/"Seitona") Watch - $698 Delivered @ Linda & Co Jewellers

180

Released in November 2021, the white panda, aka Seitona, is simply a beautiful 39mm chronograph watch, https://www.seikowatches.com/au-en/products/prospex/ssc813, I think RRP is $1050 - also available on special at:

** Star-Buy - $717 - https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-speedtimer-mens-watch-ssc813p/
** Watch Depot - $719 (with a potential further $20 off via a code when joining their club) - https://www.watchdepot.com.au/products/seiko-prospex-speedti…

I price-matched at David Jones yesterday through their 'price-promise'. I was advised it has a three-year Seiko manufacturer's warranty although no printed warranty card or instruction manual comes with Seiko watches anymore.

"The Seiko SSC813P1 Prospex Speedtimer is a Solar powered watch with 100m water resistance. The SSC813P features a classic looking chronograph with a white dial and a stainless steel case and bracelet with a three-fold clasp with a push-button release. The glass used is Curved Sapphire Crystal.

Featuring the Seiko Solar V192 movement, the SSC813P1 has an approximate accuracy tolerance of +/- 15 seconds per month and a 6 month Power reserve once fully charged. This model is finished in full Stainless Steel with a pull-out crown. The hands and the markers have lumibrite to make them visible at night (once fully charged). The case size is 39mm and thickness 13.3mm and the entire watch weighs approximately 160gm.

The additional features of the SSC813P Speedtimer are a screw case back, Tachymeter function, 24 hour hand, a chronograph up to 60 mins in 1/5 second increments, a date display, small second hand, overcharge prevention function and a resuming electric power generation display.

Seiko SSC813P1 uses Seiko solar movement V192. The finish and the overlook look is simply classic. Destined to be a Seiko cult classic model. The 39mm case size with the curved Sapphire crystal. Feels solid on the hand". - https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-speedtimer-mens-watch-ssc813p/

The golden panda has a more interesting face compared to this. It is still on sale at Starbuy for 599.

Golden panda is harder to match with attire as opposed to white and black faced dial.

      • Agreed, black and white (albiet navy) panda is more classic and matches every outfit.,
        I don't personally wear gold.

Annoying that different colourways of the same thing are $100 more but I've got a pagani daytona anyway (great quality and time keeping, seiko mecha-quartz, sapphire crystal nice bracelet was ~$150 & looks like a more expenisve watch than it is).

the golden panda is certainly a contentious colour, the white face panda seems far to be the most popular of the range since their release in late 2021.

How do these watches compare to Seiko's Coutura range?

    • Much less chavvy

      • Are you from the U.K? There's not too many chavs around Australia

        • Jog on, geezer..

    • More serious answer. This is a specific watch vs a range of watches so it is hard to make a comparison. I'd recommend pulling up the spec for a specific watch and maybe the movement's spec sheet and comparing.

      Very generally -

      • Styling - subjective. I don't like most of the Coutura line up and i'd never wear something with Diamantes.
      • Size - Couturas are huge. This is a pretty reasonable 39mm and will fit most wrist sizes well.

Second time you have asked this .. just get what you like. Not sure why you are asking someone else to make that decision for you.

Definitely the best C/W on offer for this model, I still look at least once a week for deals on this one, hoping to nab it at sub $600 (Deepak pls)

Warning about all of these 60 minute chronograph models - they're not very useful as a stopwatch, as the 60 minute dial is too small to easily read and particularly when the hand is in between minute gradations. It might be okay if you only need to measure things +- 1 minute, or under 60 seconds using just the second hand.

For practicality a 30 minute chronograph is much easier to read

What's the main difference vs the Daytona cronograph?

The central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second, while the two counters on the dial display the lapsed time in hours and minutes

Hardly anyone will be buying this to use as a stopwatch or ever use that function IMO. It's more about the overall ('expensive') look of the watch.
One of these would be better.

      • +1

Yeah, it's very much a style choice with a bit of functionality.

Most mechanical chronographs like the Daytona have a 30 minute stopwatch dial with a hand that only 'ticks' over to the next minute after the full minute is elapsed, which is much simpler to read especially on a smaller watch.

  • I don't mind seiko white dials, i think the snowflake made it popular.
This has been on my want to buy list for so long but no authorised sellers anymore … https://www.watchshopping.com/seiko-presage-spb223j1.html

Nice dial - white on white is pretty hard to read though, defeats the purpose a lot. If they had blue hands would be a cracker

Nice, was planning on posting this.

I tried this in store yesterday - big mistake.

I decided to try and buy it in store today. Sadly, no stock so picking it up on Wednesday.

Still, a good start to consolidating my collection.

    • Good sales person behind the counter!

      • +1

Ha! the first store was pretty useless.

The salesperson said she knew nothing about watches but kept talking. For example, they said it might be a swiss movement because it had sapphire glass.

Linda & Co seemed pretty decent and the sales person knew the watch by reference number.

Thank Christ this is not the same price as the $599 Starbuy deal for the Golden Panda, otherwise I would have bought it.

My little watch box is completely full, which has allowed me to hold to my "I'm allowed this many watches" rule.

But gaaaaaawd am I tempted at this price!

      • +1

Not wrong, I've surpassed my 6 watch box's capacity by a couple, and a few G-Shock/solar watches (which are better off left out in the light anyway).

Ideally a 5-6 box collection plus those few solars is my ideal, with a one-in one out policy, upgrading and refining..
Wouldn't get much for selling the $100-300 homages etc but could probably offload them anyway for something).

      • +3

I need a rule like that. My eventual plan is to slim the collection down to fit into existing watch boxes but I will likely just buy a new watch box.

        • +1

I will likely just buy a new watch box.

          this is the way

    • +2

go on….you only live once and it is a really lovely watch, I'm glad I bought one yesterday :)
