  • Do I want to be buying this coffee machine?? Does anyone have this?

    • +6

I've had it for 5/6 years and it's been perfect. Hasn't needed any maintenance, just cleans, which it tells you on a schedule and is easy to do at home.

      • Same

      • I read that as 56 years, jeeez

Nah, no one bought this model before.

Do you want to be the first to try and share the experience?

      Edit:
My bad, looks like one OzBargainer bought it before.
You might be the second one. :)

    • Yes, do you. Come again tomorrow for more AI assistance.

Jokes apart, this is an excellent coffee machine - or at least the coffee it makes is very good.

    • I find they last 3 years of making great coffees.
But I hammer them due to coffee addiction.
The solenoids are the first item to go, then they start to leak internally so corrode.
      Rinse and repeat.

I've had mine since 2017. It's been great. Also paid $599 then too.

Great beginner machine, I upgraded to the Dual Boiler after about a year though. I have a bad case of upgradeitis though.

      • Which one did you upgrade to?

          Breville Dual Boiler

@The Hobo: Definitely would recommend a dual boiler machine which isn’t that much more. If you replace the water filter when required and CLEAN it properly after use, as in get all of the old ground beans with a suitable brush, these machines will do the job. I would also suggest you pre warm the portafilter - that goes for any model with a manual portafilter handle - you are likely to get a better extraction and subsequent flavour.

These machines can be a bit deceptive in what is required in terms of preparation but also cleaning up afterwards.

I happen to enjoy that process to get a better flavour coffee.

Highly suggest doing a coffee course at the local TAFE and pick up some tips like as soon as you have textured milk blow some extra steam through. Always run water through the extraction head to clean up any ground coffee and use the brush.

If you put the time and effort in, then most of the machines will give you a good extraction. Tips like this are often mentioned in the manual or if you are lucky, come with a packaged course.

Keep them clean, spend the time looking after them and providing you find beans which have a flavour you like, then go for it.

The number one reason I hear when I ask people if if they use their coffee machine in their kitchen is usually - “it’s was way more work than I thought and I don’t have time to clean it properly when I’m getting ready for work”.

Maybe a fully automatic machine might be a better choice but these too need maintenance just a bit different and are much more likely to break down.

Just something I thought people might want yo consider that the sales people won’t tell you, especially if you buy online.

Cleaning and maintenance are the key, making sure you clean the machine properly after you finish making coffees will keep you using it for longer.

I hope that helps people with their decision otherwise it becomes an expensive decoration on your kitchen bench.

I've had it for a couple of years and it's been good but if you're a coffee connoisseur you might want to spend a bit more.

      1. Look at different colours if you want a bargain, I got the Red one for like $500 2020/2021 when the SS was $250 more.
      2. The portafilter is I think 53mm, most accessories are aimed at the 58mm commercial ones or at least the 58mm ones are cheaper for the same thing.
      3. The tamp isn't perfect. There is at least 1mm each side if you centre it.
      4. The single shot baskets are cone shaped causing excess extraction on edges. Double shot baskets are fine.
      5. Due to the smaller portafilter good luck getting to correct weight of coffee into the basket. I use a bean cup to grind the beans first before putting into the basket otherwise it overflows a lot.

It's reliable, does the job but it's far from perfect.

Weigh 18g of whole beans then put it in the grinder. You will get it consistent for the 54mm portafilter.

Another trick I use is to grind it halfway, stop, knock the basket a few times and continue the rest of the grind for the 18g beans.

        • I do exactly this. Onto second machine - first last 6 years. Works a treat and good way to easily swap to decaf beans.

Try one of these, makes a big difference.

          • @jono31b: It is in the box now. I bought one this week on the JB 15% off.

          • @jono31b: Oohh. I like the look of this. Might order one and see if it makes life easier.
            Thanks

    • I've had mine for about a year or so.

Background: Family is a bunch of instant-coffee drinkers. I was brewing filter coffee with fresh beans.
This machine happens to fit our needs perfectly since it was a step up from instant coffee and let me dip my toes into espresso.
Fam is happy, but I know for a fact if I was just brewing for myself I'd probably get something different.

It really depends on your situation!

    • Have owned this since mid 2020 or so, having never been an instant coffee drinker but having coffee while out at cafes etc.

There's definitely a steep learning curve but this machine can pull OK shots and froth milk decently once you have learned how it works.

I'm sure there's better machines out there for more $ but almost 3 years later and as someone who could take or leave coffee in general but enjoys a good cappuccino, I'm happy with it.

  • Saw one at kerb side, was a little tempted to make an U turn, in case it's an easy fix. But traffic was very bad, a major deterrent.

  • I have this for almost 6 yrs, problems start to show up. Grinder is unworkable, simply won't grind any coffee beans and water flow issues. However, it doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend this machine, for one thing it save me lot of money of going out for a coffee over 5 yrs consider the number of coffee we drink per day.

6 Years is a good run

    • Considering the price of coffees these days it pays itself off very quickly, $600 seems a bit on the higher side thou…

    • Buy a Jura, be dead in 1/3 that time. Good run man

You can buy a used Breville Dual Boiler for the same price. In fact, I picked my 12 month old one for $500. It's a much, much better machine with a lot more room to grow.

There's a mod called a Slayer mod, which basically gives the Dual Boiler the same functionality as a $10,000+ coffee machine. If you just need a caffiene hit and couldn't care less about the taste of the espresso, then by all means, go Barista Express

EDIT: the only downside is it doesn't come with a built-in grinder

    • $600 for the dual boiler?? Where!
The cheapest I've seen in a while was $820 and that was limited stock. Currently available for $900 from a recent post.

      • Used - ie Gumtree or FB marketpace

    • I think comparing a $600-$800 domestic machine against a $10,000 commercial machine is like comparing apples and watermelons - a domestic unit is not going to give you the quality of a commercial multi head dual boiler machine. The fact that you can texturise your milk while extracting the coffee saves time but that is not a reasonable comparison. That being said you can buy commercial quality dual boiler machines, but do your research and go to local coffee roaster. They will give you some brand names.

  • After using the Breville Barista Express for over two years, the pressure gauge on mine stopped working, and the cleaning tablet couldn't fix it. The machine's cramped interior made accessing the gauge and hoses for maintenance difficult. It still pulls good espresso without the gauge.

    • I just posted below mate that I got a repair done 2 1/2 years after purchase. Had to go to the office of Fair Trading to force their hand. Might be worth considering?

  • Dont forget to claim freebies from Breville, they might be useless in your case but might come in handy
    https://promotions.breville.com.au/bonus-coffee-experience-m…

  • I have had 2 of these now and I must say im disapointed they didnt last more than about 3 years each. Decided to give another brand a try.

  • Is it worth an upgrade from my Breville Bambino Plus? Ive been using mine for 2 years and pretty happy with it but this is a good deal.

  • I have one of these (it was a gift) and I don't like it, it made me quit cappuccino and now I just drink espresso. The milk boiler first pees some water and after a minute start to produce steam while making loud noises. Gear for grinder on left hand side is not very informative, to adjust amount of shots you have to read the manual or memorise the procedure.

Overall I say go for a dual boiler with digital display instead.

  • I have one of these. After a couple of years it started spurting out water when pulling an expresso. The group head inside the machine comes loose. It's meant to be a common issue. Send it back to Breville and they repaired it at their own cost despite the one year warranty. Happened again six months later. Contacted Breville and this time they advise I would need to pay for the repairs. Had to go through the office of Fair trading to force them to meet their obligations under the Fair Trading act. I see lots of other post here from people who have never had any issues so YMMV

  • It seems that Amazon AU changed the policy. The comments of returning an item is no longer optional. If I want to return, not sure if I can say I didn't enjoy the machine etc
