Reference/Resources for Using a Mobile phone Overseas - eSIM, Travel SIM, International Roaming

please check wiki for latest update: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/using_mobile_phone_overseas

  • A dual-e/SIM phone, with the primary/Australian mobile number on an eSIM, gives the flexibility of adding a physical and/or another digital SIM

Receiving calls

  • Unlike an SMS, receiving a call to an Australian mobile number when overseas is not free, unless via Wi-Fi calling, which is currently available when roaming only to those using Telstra's network here (e.g. Boost)

  • Using a secondary e/SIM for Wi-Fi calling with your primary is only possible if the secondary is not roaming, so likely local to its location

  • If you have a VoIP provider like Crazytel for your fixed/landline phone number, then you could divert your Australian mobile number to it, and receive (as well as make) calls via their CrazyPhone app, which also allows you to set its caller ID as your mobile number:

Maybe this should be in the Wiki rather than a forum post?

  • Thanks!
I'm using Woolworths Mobile prepaid long expiry on eSIM, plus a local data-only SIM and getting free "roaming".
    Samsung phone .
Incoming and outgoing calls work well, no Wifi needed. The only thing missing is outgoing SMS.

Vietnam local SIM was 220k dong (A$15) at the airport for unlimited data, one month.

So this works with any Telstra reseller, but not Optus or Vodafone?

    • I am using Woolworths Mobile Physical Sim prepaid Long expiry. no free roaming? May I know how can you get a free roaming? How do they charge while you are at overseas? My one can only can use it in Australia.

      • Roaming should show on your phone. You receive SMS for free. Since prepaid, no danger of accidental billing.
You can make and receive calls using VoWifi (wifi calling) , over 2nd SIM or actual wifi. Phone needs to support it.

    • For the Vietnam local sim, did you have to provide id? Also, do they have a sim in Vietnam that you can use for other Asian countries too?

      • Yes. They used passport and a photo at airport stall. All very quick, efficient. No idea on roaming.

        • If I go out of airport, do they still need me to show passport. Just watching YouTube and they said outside the airport, the shops don’t need passport.
