365-Day International Roaming Packs/Add-Ons e.g. 1gb/50sms/50min $20, 5gb/100sms/100min $70 @ amaysim (App Required)

314

This may sound like an advertisement but it is still considered a deal because the previous International Roaming option available to Amaysim was only Pay As You Go meaning you can end up with more expensive charges than the Roaming Packs they just recently released.

Comparing to Boost this can be cheaper for many depends on the duration of your stay: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739448

Also, having an esim can be a great convenience to many.

All roaming packs have 365 day expiry.

Pack inclusions

Price Voice (min) SMS Data (GB)
$20 100 100
$25 50 50 1
$50 5
$70 100 100 5

EDIT:

i find many people in the comments do not understand the pros and cons of using international roaming vs travel SIMs. If you don't need International Roaming then this deal is not for you.

If you want to understand more about International Roaming, this is another post about Boost which is actually more expensive than Amaysim: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739448

This is an announcement, not a bargain. Belongs in the forums.

    Also, it's a dupe.

    • +1

a deal because it used to be more expensive (pay as you go).

similar post in the past had been raised as a deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739448

      • Dunno what you're smoking, but $20 is way more expensive than I have every spent roaming.
50c each for a text or two sent. Gimme PAYG anyday.

        • Curious to know, how about your data spending and also cost of receiving calls?

Also, the Boost one was never available prior to that the announcement was simply marked as a deal…

          • -2

@meong: I'm on holiday. No data reqd and I'm def not taking any calls.

            Been doing it for decades.

            • @BBF: With this trip, i actually need to work remotely hence why I need International Roaming.

Your needs can be solved just by using travel sim which I had done in the past too using Three's Internet With Legs.

My current need is not a holiday, i need to receive and make calls using my own number.

              • +1

@meong: I don't need data/calls or local sim while holidaying. Free wifi & chilling is plenty.

I understand that some people can't turn off…. I pity them.

This is not a good deal, but not neg worthy as some may find it valuable. More a forum post.

                • @BBF: Well, many people travel overseas for work or working remotely…

As i mentioned above, my next trip is not a holiday indeed as I will be working remotely…

                • @BBF: Fyi, similar post for Boost was posted as a deal with 100+ votes:
                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739448

            • @BBF: What network & plan you on? I also just want incoming sms

              • @freewhere: Amaysim is fine for incoming texts according to their help info.

I'm amaysim, mate, boost and aldi. Actually amaysim and one of the other three depending on deals.

                • @BBF: Agreed, no need roaming packs just to receive SMS as discussed below.

                • @BBF: Sorry 1 more question mate since u mentioned boost, it works the same? I'm currently on Boost, have you been able to use it for free incoming sms while roaming?

  • +6

way cheaper to just buy a travel sim

    • +5

not a good reason to downvote…

international roaming is different to buying travel sim.

i need international roaming as i will be working remotely and need my australian number to be available…

for most people, yes you can make do with travel sims…

      • Dual sim phone or use a second phone for your oz number.

Not saying this deserves a downvote but if you aren't using dual sim or second phone you aren't saving…

        • Having dual SIM means my Australian number will be unreachable as the travel sim will be using a different number.

I actually need to be able to receive and make calls using my Australian number…

          • -2

@meong: No a dual sim phone can have both numbers active at the same time… Hence dual sim phone

            • +5

@Chocobros: Yes but if i don't enable International Roaming on my primary number (which is what i use for work) I won't be able to receive calls even if i set my phone to DUAL ON.

              • +1

@meong: That's a fair point. Only work around is to miss the call and call back with international number but it would require intl mins and be a bit messy so fair enough.

                Have my +1

    • I rate this for the ease and the transferability to multiple countries

  • I think the basic travel plan would be good enough to get OTPs overseas. For everything else you should get a local sim.

    • +1

just clarified on chat. OTP will still go through without subscribing to a pack

      • yup, i tested this myself in the past…

        • That's good to know. I haven't travel since they introduced these packs. Will test it next month

  • -4

Pretty expensive compared to travel sim

    • +1

you are correct, but different purpose… if you dont need to keep access to your number overseas, best get a travel sim…

  • +8

I saw this, is so expensive. Better to look into Felix mobile, especially if you are going to be travelling a while

    $20
4GB of data at speeds up to 20Mbps
100 standard international minutes of incoming and outgoing calls
    100 standard international SMS
    Valid for 365 days

    • +4

you are correct, with Felix sometimes you can just get away with signing up for the free first month offer so all you need to pay is the international roaming charge…

however, Felix coverage in Indonesia was very poor as it only had access to Three network whereas Amaysim got me access to Telkomsel which is the equivalent to Telstra network…

    • One thing to consider with Felix is the the smaller list of countries that it's available in, and I saw someone say their phone wouldn't even connect to receive SMS in a country that's wasn't on the list. So would depend on your travel patterns and destinations.

  • +3

Excellent way of continuing receiving calls / sending SMS on your Aus number whilst overseas - whilst the bulk should be a local / travel sim.

    • yes, i think many people dont get why you would need an international roaming pack when you can get great travel sims out there like Internet With Legs etc…

  • rubbish, 100mins voice for $70, whole point of having roaming is to use your own number to make, receive calls, whats 100mins going to do, if you just need data get a sim in the country you are in

    • most international roaming packs are like that though… you can confirm with prepaid Optus, Boost or Telstra… however, similar to Felix, Amaysim's expiry for International Roaming Packs is 365 days…

  • Would amaysim card work overseas to receive SMS without taking up these expensive packs?

    • +1

I was recently in Laos and was able to get OTP's while having my Amysim card in my phone YMMV.

    • +4

you can still receive sms without the pack. Just clarified this with the Chat Support Agent

    • +2

yes, i can confirm it works to just receive SMS so you can still use it for your banking, just remember to turn off mobile data first before you turn it on…

    • +1

@Skyisblue is this not a standard feature of any oz sim?

    • +2

      @oldvic @spiinl @4iedemon @Chocobros.. Thanks guys for the response.. This helps 🙏

  • I used this simcard for a while. One day it jumped to 3G can has never returned to normal signal.

    • Rest network should do it.

  • +2

I have been research a lot regarding International Roaming options.
and the cheapest & reliable plan I found is from Optus Prepaid.
What you need to do, just purchase $2 Prepaid SIM, during the activation, get the $20 Roaming Package for 10GB of DATA.
Total of $22 you are getting 10GB that can be use for 14 days. you can stack/rollover the data up to 100GB.

    • Nice

    • +1

Optus prepaid is great value and reliable. Me being a sim slut had used Optus for International Roaming in the past.

Too bad their esim activation still requires you to go to a store. So far only Felix and Amaysim have the best esim activation process.

Optus however doesn't offer 365 expiry of their roaming packs unlike Felix and Amaysim.

    • This is just data right, ie no receiving/making calls whist roaming as in the above amaysim deal?

  • wow! so confused headline
    365 days, $0
    daily fee - $20 or $70 wot?

    or
    365 days, $0 daily fee
    $20 or $70 still wot?

  • Nothing wrong in your deal OP. You don't have fan base here who will give + vote for your deals. This deal is much better than the Boost as it comes with 365 days expiry.

    • Thanks, i think Boost in general has a much larger fan base here than Amaysim.

However, as others have pointed out in other posts, Boost's 4G/5G had been flakey for me that i constantly would need to turn on/off Aeroplane mode just to use mobile data.

Amaysim had been very stable for me but I stayed away from it due to not having International Roaming Packs so I was glad to know they finally them.

  • I think title would be easier to understand without the mention of $0 daily fee

    365 Days International Roaming Packs: $20, $25, $50, $70 @ amaysim (App Required)

  • Recently spent 3 weeks in Vietnam. Bought data esim (sim2) there so had dual sims …Boost is on my physical primary sim.
Set phone to use wifi calling, which went thru sim2. Made and received calls with no global roaming on boost.
There's info on whirlpool forums. Caveat - needs telstra or telstra reseller such as boost

Slight restrictions as for the above post.

    • Care to share the Whirlpool forum link, please?

      • +1

don't know the Whirlpool link, but basically, Wi-Fi calling whilst overseas is currently available only to those using Telstra's network here (e.g. Boost)

Using a secondary e/SIM for Wi-Fi calling with your primary is only possible if the secondary is not roaming, so likely local to its location

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/767836

        • Cheers! I was about to comment to move it to the wiki, then I reached the comment section ;)

Objectively speaking, it is a niche but within the niche, it is actually a reasonable option, just probably not for most of the OzBargain users who are savvy enough to source local SIMs. To be fair, this is more an announcement rather than a bargain.

People that might find this useful including for the parents/grandparents who are travelling overseas but stubbornly do not want to or find it too technologically challenging to buy a local SIM and change the SIM themselves. Or they simply want to be able to be contacted by their friends and families while being away.

PAYG rate for optus MVNO on data usage is ridiculous ($500/GB), and not many has got roaming packs compared to Telstra or Vodafone TPG MVNOs. Roaming options for other long expiry prepaid SIMs or lower cost MVNOs are too pretty overall, main ones that are considered not outrageous are:

    • felix: $20 for 4GB, 365 expiry - excellent value. But it is also $35/mth, so overall yearly cost with one roaming activation is $440 (or $387.50 if you use the half price for 3 months)

    • Lebara/Kogan/Boost: ~$25-50 for ~1-4GB but with only ~3-14 days expiry. Lesser yearly cost during promo (~$99-260 plan cost + several activation of roaming pack depending on length of stay)

So if you fit into the not needing large amount of data, want long roaming expiry, and the benefit of a cheaper yearly cost on phone plan. Then the amaysim packs are reasonable. But again, this is more an announcement than bargain.

    • +1

Why is it when its Amaysim it is considered to be an announcement but with Boost it is considered to be a deal with 100 votes and kept as "Long-Running" deal?

I have pasted this link way too many times here:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739448

I asked the question many times in here but no one can seem to make the comparison but i have way too many people commenting here to justify that this is not a deal…

I think I have mentioned above many times that international roaming is different use case especially if you use it for work. Not all people who travel internationally are on holiday. Some are working/business trip. Some had to take care of family member overseas while working remotely such as in my case.

If you are objectively viewing this deal then you can see there is a different response to this deal compared to the Boost deal.

As someone else has commented above, it is in the end about whether the poster has enough followers/fan base instead of objectively assessing whether this is a deal or not.

There are many other deals in Ozbargain that are more niche than this which could be a CPU fan cooler or some specific spare part for a fishing equipment but no one goes into the deal and spend so much time explaining how niche the deal is and just simply moved on.

I find this deal is being unnecessarily treated with so much controversy instead of simply "meh its not for me" and move on.

      • Personally I think the Boost thread is also more an announcement than a deal (shrug).

If I have to guess, it may be due to Boost inherently gives more features than amaysim, such as VoWiFi (while Boost is also more expensive than amaysim, but not prohibitively so as it is still cheaper than being with the actual three telecom, or at least for those that use Boost.)

I agree with the merits of the roaming packs that you've have written. The difference in response may also be due to the difference in user base between Boost and Amaysim users.

    • +1

felix: $20 for 4GB, 365 expiry - excellent value. But it is also $35/mth, so overall yearly cost with one roaming activation is $440 (or $387.50 if you use the half price for 3 months)

FYI you can pause your plan and you'll still be able to use it while roaming overseas. so this seems better in the long term if you need data

  • Presumably this means no more free incoming SMS whilst roaming with amaysim (ie without paying for one of these plans). Amazing.

    • +2

You can still received SMS without any of these packs. Just make sure you have international roaming turned on.

    • I just tested.

I texted my wife's amaysim number which doesn't have International Roaming Packs and she was able to receive my SMS from me.

      We are both overseas now.

  • This offer is welcoming to those that don't have an esim capable phone, need data capability and international services without dumping your Australian number and swapping sims like an idiot.

When overseas I must be the minority where I don't sit around the pool all day, sinking piss and not interested in venturing outside the hotel or shanty.

I hire a motorcycle with the wife and we travel to the remote parts of the country, where cellular connectivity might not be great, but it is capable. Upload pics, get local up to date information, google local information and refresh maps is all nice to have on your own phone.

    • +1

I think you just ignored all the discussions above.

People don't always travel overseas for holiday.

I have esim and i prefer this over Boost cause Boost doesn't offer esim atm.

Again, a reminder that International Roaming post for Boost received 100+ votes. People actually do use International roaming as you can see in the Boost post I linked above.

  • Amaysim has roaming to 90 countries. When travelling overseas that counts.

  • Might have been mentioned above, straight or in passing, but:

I've just talked to an online chatperson at amaysim and they said
    - without these new packs, having any $ credit in my amasyim account or not, I won't be able to receive any calls,
    - so in order to even receive the calls, you need one of the packs,
    - without a pack, I'm still going to to receive regular text messages, as they're free to receive.

  • This still works great for my around the world 6-week trip that I have planned. I'm taking two phones (no laptop), my old s21 as well as my fold 3. I'll have a backup in case one gets stolen but then I can also use an amaysim and a local sim if I want.

This reduces the hassle of arriving at an airport at an inconvenient time where you don't speak the language and you are so exhausted you just want to switch on your phone and get out of the airport and worry about data tomorrow. Some countries also have restrictions around selling sims to tourists.

In 6 weeks I'm going through Japan Mexico Panama Columbia Brazil Ethiopia Israel and India.

I would get disposable number just for the holiday and simply purchase Amaysim SIM only 28 day plan for $7 for the first month and $15 for the second month. I don't think you need a long expiry Sim for this bolt-on package.

Then I can use the $50 of roaming data for 5 GB being careful to reduce data use and then a travel SIM just for South America or for countries I stay longer. Maybe 25GB over 6 weeks for $250 with less hassles is not a big cost in the scheme of overall holiday expenses.

I see some Americans talking about GoogleFi. I wonder if there are better deals in other countries for someone facing my scenario.

Also there are some overseas eSIM providers but you can't use hotspot. With this Amaysim real SIM, can hotspot I assume.

  • Does anyone know with the 100 minutes of roaming calls, is that only calls to/from Australian numbers?
Or can you also use it to make calls to numbers in the country that you're roaming in?

    • Did you find the answer? I want to know this also.

      • In my understanding it only works if the destination number is from the country that was also included in the free international call… otherwise you just need to top up the credits..

i remember i had to call a vendor from Sweden and had to top up the credit but i was still in Australia so cannot confirm exactly what it would look like in an international roaming scenario.

when i was in Indonesia i did call someone's Indonesian mobile number but didn't check how much it affected my roaming inclusion. It was a quick call like "hey where are you… which side of the building are you at?". All i know so far during my 3 weeks stay in Indonesia, I didn't end up using a lot of minutes as most of my vendors would reach out to me using Teams anyway. I still have 96 out 100 minutes inclusion so far.
