Yamaha NS-SW300 250W 10" Subwoofer $399 (RRP $999) Delivered @ Todds Hi Fi Brisbane

1090

My first post, please go easy on me.

My old faithful B&W subwoofer died so I was in the market to look for a replacement subwoofer. My budget was under $500. Then I came across this. Although not an European or American brand, it has very good reviews.

I looked at past OzB deals and I think the best so far was $439 on Amazon prime day sale. Currently Amazon is selling for $599. The next closest one is about $549. So at $399 including shipping is a very good deal IMHO. It probably can't compete with some of the bigger subwoofer from SVS. But to my ears, it was way better than the B&W that died on me. At this price, I don't think you can find anything else even close to its performance.

I use a Yamaha V6A AV receiver.

            • @Pixie13: I'm more about SQ than SPL. What you're describing sounds like someone that would have had 2x 15" subwoofers in their Suzuki swift, haha. Funny but also could be due to the bigger cone and air movement that comes with it.

You may not be happy with an 8" sub but depeends what the rest of your setup is and how big the room is.
For movies i'm sure it would be fine. I live in apartments and there are basically three sides that can be close and carpet so reasonbly quite and decent accoustics i think.

Most stores let you return within 30 days anyway if you don't like it (or try to demo one).

              • @G-rig: You're not far off actually - had a 10" in a jazz back in the day lol. The room is relatively small 4m x 5m and the sub is paired with the following: front - https://www.selby.com.au/brands/polk/polk-signature-s55-pair…, center - https://www.selby.com.au/brands/polk/polk-signature-s35-conf… rear - https://www.qacoustics.com/products/3010i-compact-bookshelf-…

The plaster rattles because it isn't nailed to frame properly (pain with movies)

                • @Pixie13: Hmm you may want a 10" sub to go with that then, looks like they deserve a bit of grunt. Dunno, says the yamaha out of stock anyway.

                  • @G-rig: I have this already https://www.selby.com.au/brands/polk/polk-hts-10-10-inch-sub… but I am thinking of adding a second to improve on bass. I love bass and the sub on special

                    • @Pixie13: Oh nice, surely that one would be enough, just turn it up a bit more?
It looks nicer and like better quality than Yamaha I'd guess.

I've still got a broken 10" Magnat Vector sub 25A from my HT days - it vibrates so I think needs new foam surround or crossovers hmm. they were a great set back in the day when i could be bothered with all cables and AV receivers and separate components (DVD, CD players).

Not sure about you, but I'm too OCD to get two different ones.

                      • @G-rig: That's a good idea - just feels like only the lower frequencies come through.
That looks like it is a nice sub you have.
Exactly, I am very reluctant to get a different sub in addition.

                        • @Pixie13: The sub job is the low end, maybe need to adjust settings, do you have crossover controls?

I guess my setup makes it easier to tune/change with the various HP/LP filters on the montiors and the sub - they are XLR in and XLR out so work well together - after looking at the manual decided to leave the monitors on FLAT and the sub low cut on 100Hz - prefer the speakers to act as normal and blends well together.

These days have a Sammy Soundbar q950a which is great with a GTV plugged directly in, 4k and Atmos.
Also in the same room a separate setup for music - RPi4 > ADI2 FS DAC > Yamaha HS8S sub > HS80M Monitors on stands. Both go great at their tasks as music never sounds any good on soudbars (but alright if you don't have speakers).

So maybe have another look at the manual and see what's best, you could play around with the settings a little.

            • @Pixie13: Look into bass shakers as another option.

              • @Morien: Thank you. I literally had no these existed before now

      • (that is a fantastic sub btw)

  • Wanted to buy this but needed research about it didn't expect sell out so quick such ashame couldn't get it this price, hope they restock soon

    • Are you rugger15? :p

  • Any ideas how this would compare to something like sonos sub gen 3 or audioengine s8?

  • Yamaha NS-SW050 8” Subwoofer is also on sale Regular price $499.00 Sale price$199.00

  • Very excited for this, managed to get one before it had been Ozbargained. such a good deal. Finally something my bloody Audiolab 6000A can connect to

  • Please let me know if anyone change of mind, kindly pm me.

  • How's everyone's experience with this subwoofer so far?

    • Amazing. Made my old B&W shame in comparison. Every gunshot makes my room rattle. I dont need to go to the cinema now.

  • After 2 weeks of ownership, I am starting to see some of the limitation of this subwoofer. Some scenes cause rattles in this subwoofer, notably the opening scene of Edge of Tomorrow, some scenes in Midway. I've read that many people have experienced similar issue.

I went back to Todd's hifi to raise the concern. It happened to their demo subwoofer as well. So we tried on a higher end SVS model (about $3000) and it suffers the same rattle. The sound engineer their told me its not the subwoofer, but sometimes movie studio mixes sound that are so low freqeuncy which is designed for commercial subwoofer in cinema but not for home use.

I googled Edge of Tomorrow Subwoofer rattle and found out its a known problem. Some even called that opening scene a "subwoofer killer". Its because the sound goes down to 5-10Hz which is beyond the capability of Yamaha SW300.

But for other bass heavy movie such as Godzilla 1998, Stealth, San Andreas, ID4 and Top Gun Maverick, it has no problem handling it. The bass was so good that it rivals real cinema.

Anyway, its voted as one of the best subwoofer in 2023:

    • That's interesting and good to know that there is nothing wrong with the subwoofer.
It's pretty common to adjust the subwoofer gain level based on different content (and don't crank Edge of Tomorrow again ha)
