  • You just reminded me I never used my free online demonstration from my barista pro purchase, bugger

Not familiar with this new version but the Oracle goes on sale for $1,600 and I'm pretty sure it's the better machine.

    • For beginners, this is the easier machine IMO. Orcale is more hands-on.

      • Just curious how do you distribute the coffee evenly in the portafilter before tamping it? I imagine the ground coffee drops into the portafilter is higher in the centre and if not distributed evenly then it may cause channeling?

        • Some people use a coffee "puck rake", a portafilter funnel is very helpful in this scenario. Another alternative is a fancy tamper that has a distributor built into it.

@lolsnarfsnarf: By puck take, do you mean a wdt tool?

          • @lolsnarfsnarf: But the gap here is very little if you pull the portafilter out of it the tip of the ground coffee is likely to fall out. I wonder why it doesn’t include a built in distributor like you said onto this coffee machine.

100% Oracle over this one. dual boiler vs single thermojet.

      • Oh that explains why this model is smaller. I thought it was just the new replacement model. The sensor looks interesting built into the tray. The steam wand looks a better design though.

  • We have the Oracle touch ($$$$) at the office, I can't dial in a coffee as good as the BES920 dual boiler + smart grinder pro. However most people in the office can use it :)

Tried the Barista touch and it does ok to good coffee. n=1!

Manual is always….ALWAYS.. better than automatic
That's why you got better results with the 920.
I've had my fair share of coffee machines and am using a semi pro now. But had oracle and had bes920 etc and there has never been a time the oracle made better coffee than a manual machine.

      • Agree, have the Oracle in the office, using same beans as at home and home (Barista Express) makes better coffee

      • Always? How about when guests or partners are using it? No point having a machine that CAN produce a 10/10 cup when an automated option can produce pretty much a 7/10 cup every time. I understand your point, but for the overwhelming majority of people, I think they would get more use out of the Oracle. There's a reason it reviews so well and most users I know say they will buy the same again when their machine dies. I've had 2x 920 and now an Oracle…my coffee consumption increased when I got it, no more faffing about.

        • My missus makes killer espresso for me with the 920 dual boiler, just took some time and it used to be horrible!

I cannot imagine the filthly espresso automatic machines churn out. If you're adding milk yeah get any machine lol.

        • I see your point there, but if you know even a little bit about how to prepare your puck. The coffee result will produce better extract.
Also the auto frother only works ok with full cream milk, once again if you know at all how to froth a milk any other machine will make better froth even the cheaper barista express/pro

  • Picked this up for $1,699.15 with JB HIFI after dark %15 off code last month.
Upgraded from Breville Barrista Express. No regrets so far.

  • I find these machines a complete waste of people's money and you would better spend it on a BES 920 and grinder. But understand people have limited space and may not be able to have two separate equipment.. in that case I would still buy the bes920 and a small hand grinder.

    • I agree. I also recently started to get interested in higher end more manual with lever controls etc. looking at Rocket or expobar or similar. But the brand new ones are outside of my pay grade. Looking for a second hand deal but not sure how to avoid a lemon. Any idea from anyone about what to look for ( apart from obvious damage outside, and pulling a shot and tasting.)

Yesterday, I tried filter coffee on a 10$ setup. Used my Eureka grinder to get 30g grind and ran 500ml of hot water. It was delicious.

Gave some rest to my slayer moded BDB 😂 Don't get a machine if you're new to coffee making. Just 10$ setup is enough, otherwise it's a rabbit hole. You'd spend 100s on accessories and types of milk and coffee beans.

First setup should be simple and easy. If you still want to go deep then get a machine. I'd never recommend anyone buy a coffee machine.
