Will this charge in IKEA charger anyone knows ?

    • +8

Any NiMH AA/AAA battery charger will charge any rechargeable NiMH AA/AAA battery. no special printer cartridge like chip to tell it this isn't the original charger

      • +1

Had issues with batteries I got from eBay. IKEA charger didn't like it

        • +2

          Then probably bad batteries

Chargers work on a couple of very simple methods. They don't check the brand of the battery. They check voltage, current.

As long as your not doing something crazy like trying to charge lithium cells in an enerloop charger, it's fine.

      • Thx

    • The Smart and Quick pack you mention is actually $42.30 S&S.

      • +1

Clip the $5 promo coupon which is available to all Eneloop products

      • +2

        with the $5 voucher
        S&S discounted 42.30 -> 37.30

    • Will this charge the pro too? Or do you have to buy the pro charger? Thanks.

      • Just take a bit longer to charge the pros.
Not exactly what I'd call a quick charger at 550mA though. (I suspect the charger is the same whether you buy the pro or normal bundle)

        • Thanks for the info.

Had to re-click the voucher button a couple times

    ozbargain premium?

I have 14 years old white Sanyo Eneloops that still hold charge well and I still use them. They were the first (?) low self discharge batteries. Great investment back then and was similar price to these, given the inflation over years.

    • +1

Lucky you.. mine are only few years old and struggling with life now. :( only used in headset for xbox.

      • Really? That's some bad luck.

I bought my eneloops for my Xbox controllers and TV/AVR remotes just before GTA V came out.

        They're still going strong today.

It'll be 10 years in July and they haven't missed a beat.

        8 x AA
        4 x AAA

      • Enerloops from a reputable source, or something else?

        • thru link here while back. cant remember who it was though :(

          • @pharkurnell: I've got several dozen AAs and AAAs, been using them from anywhere between 2-8 years. None have failed so far, and I occasionally put them through the analyzer function of my charger and they are all within 10% of their original stated capacities.

Any product is capable of failure I guess. But these cells are held up as the gold standard on places like candlepowerforums, and the guys on those forums are utterly obsessive about testing.

I've had other rechargables die though. GP cells in particular (Hong Kong brand) are absolutely terrible for reliability.

  • Anyone recommend a good charger? One that can tell what charge the batteries have and not overcharge?

    • +4

I like Nitecore chargers. I use the D4.

      • Does the D4 also give battery capacities? Would be impressive if it does.

    • +1

People used to recommend La Crosse Technology chargers on here to charge their Eneloops. I got one about 10 years ago and it's still going strong and all my Eneloops are still holding their charge well.

    • I recently got this one and am very happy with it. Has the smarts for not overcharging, shows charge state in thirds, can take USB-C or micro-USB and can charge any number of 1-4 batteries at a time.

      • +1

I would not buy this charger.

Max charge rate per channel is listed at 500mA.

The typical capacity of a AA cell is 2000-2500mAh.

To safely fast charge a NiMH cell using the 'best' cutoff method (where the charger can detect the voltage plateau that happens towards the end of the charge cycle) you need to charge at a rate of at least 1/2C. i.e 1000-1250mA

That Amazon charger is likely to misread charge state, and will instead default to some kind of "turn it off after a certain number of hours and hope that it hasn't been overcharged" It's cheap, it will kinda work through fudging it, but it's not something I would call "good."

NiMH charging strategies explained here: https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-408-charging-nickel…

I just checked, even the Nitecore doesn't charge at a fast enough rate to reach 1/2C, but they have been around for a long time and are reputable, so I would trust them more. I used a non-digital Nitecore for years, and it has been fine. My batteries have done well with it- I have verified this with my Maha 9000.

    • If you want good, Maha 9000. Tells capacity, can run refresh cycles.

It's not a budget charger though.

  • +1

Are these Pros just automatically better than the non-pro (white) versions?

Or are there applications where the non-pros are better?

    • +2

Pro's have a greater capacity so they'll last longer in any application.

Pro's are also made in Japan, non pro's are (mostly/entirely ??) made in China.

      • +1

All the listings on Amazon have a giant 'Made in Japan' at top right of packaging.

        Pro's have a greater capacity

Yeah but they also seem to advertise lower charge retention I think - "holds up to 85% charge after 1 year" on the Pros, versus "holds up to 70% charge after 10 years" on the non-pros

        • It's more the
2550mAh versus 2000mAh for AA and
          950mAh versus 800mAh for AAA
that I was referring to with respect to capacity.

          you get 20~25% more runtime.

          • @ESEMCE: I wasn't disputing the capacity, I agreed with you there. Just wondering if there are specific use cases where the non-pros are superior, and the only potential avenue to this seems to be charge retention

            • @andresampras: Pros are superior, works great with my external flash that requires 4 AA whereas the non-pro just wont charge the flash.

              • @donthaveGamepass: I run pros and white in my flash, both work fine.

Canon. EX430 iirc as well as a more powerful third party flash.

There's no 'best' all round depends on application. High or low power draw, frequency of usage. For example, using them in TV remotes is a dubious proposition - standard Duracells or whatever cost a fraction of the price and last me 3+ years, so eneloops are a total waste of resources.

            • @andresampras: And allegedly cycle count per comments lower down.

(TBH in my ownership of both, I haven't noticed a difference, but 500 charge cycles would take me 10+ years to rack up. I have 10+yo Eneloops and other brand LSD batteries, but they all have notably reduced capacities. I think my oldest Pro's might be hitting 5-6 years by now.)

        • Yeah in my experience the non-Pros are much better for low power applications like TV remotes etc. Seem to last a fair bit longer compared to the Eneloop Pros.

    • Panasonic used to state more recharge cycles for the regular ones, but now they seem to be intentionally vague about it, so who knows, I got the Pros this time because they are cheaper.

    • +1

Pro has slightly higher capacity and much shorter duty cycle. iirc something like five hundred cycles versus thousands for the white ones.

  • +1

That's interesting that the $5 saving is only on the first S&S order.

Do you reckon they are gonna close the loophole for us getting the S&S savings, and then cancelling after we receive the item?

    • +1

i think it's like credit cards - there will be tons of people that set and forget, and can't be bothered cancelling.

    • You can buy mutiples using the $5

      • Yeah, but it looks like you only get the saving the first time on each order.

What I'm concerned about is that you want to re-order something regularly, and then not be able to get a further discount because it has been ordered in the past

      • the base price went up when I upped qty to 2, be careful

        • +2

No put qty as 1 and apply the $5 voucher, then do it agin and again and again

    • +1

I've always assumed that S&S has a promotional price on the first delivery and then the following deliveries are at whatever the current price is.

And that's how Amazon makes money here - people agree to pay whatever the current price is, for convenience. And that's why we cancel before the next delivery.

  • The normal AAA are $14.80 with the coupon and S&S, which is what I bought as I do not need the Pros.

    • -3

So you paid more for an inferior product?
I mean, maybe you prefer white cause it's easier to see in a dark environment, but that's the only logical reason why you "do not need the Pros"

      • +3

        inferior product

Every ozbargain comment I've ever read on the issue has said the pros have a higher capacity but don't last as long as the regular ones. Is this not true?

        • +1

Normals are rated for 2100 charge cycles, Pros are 500. However normals will hold their charge longer, supposed to only lose 30% over 10 years, Pros will lose 15% over a year but you are also getting 20 to 30% more capacity.

Pros, good for high drain devices.
Normals good for lower drain long term use.

Whether that makes them worth paying more for, I don't know. (Only the AAA's Pros are cheaper, the AA's are more in a 4 pack, but still cheaper per in the 8 pack.)

        • Learned something, although I'm pretty skeptical.
Allegedly Pro's have a cycle rating of 500 versus Standards at 2100 charge cycles.

I guess it'd matter in really high demand use cases where you're draining batteries daily. In my case, recharging monthly at most, 500 cycles is a hell of a lot of years and I'm pretty sure both chemistries are cooked more due to age than anything else.
That being said, I still have Varta branded LSD batteries bought for $5/pack or something from Coles on a deal posted here probably 15 years ago. I use them in very low drainage tasks though cause their capacity is notably reduced.

          • @ESEMCE: yeah i saw this too.

that's ok, 500 cycles from now we'll be lusting after the latest eneloop pro ultras anyway

            • @andresampras: I reckon after about 5 years even lightly used cells see a notable decline in capacity. To crank through 2100 cycles inside that arbitrary lifespan you'd need to be charging 8 times per week, every week. That's extreme usage IMHO.
In my book, charging weekly is pretty high drain and at that cycle rate, 500 cycles would take around 10 years.

I'm really not seeing any real world benefit from the increased claimed cycle count.

        • +1

In my experience the non-Pros last longer in low energy use cases (wall clocks, TV remotes etc), so I definitely regret stocking up on Eneloop Pros. YMMV.

      • I bought the whites because they last longer, more recharges. I have some pro's which I use in my camera flash and other high drain devices and are great but for normal tv remotes, toys etc the whites will last longer.

        • when you say the whites will "last longer" you're referring to overall lifespan as opposed to individual discharge cycle, yes?

          • +1

@andresampras: The whites self discharge slower than the pros. (70% charge after 10 years vs 85% charge after 1 year)

            • @bamzero: Anyone know which is better to use in a smart door lock?

I've got a Samsung one which uses 8 X AA. currently using Eneloop pros, I think I charge them every 9 months or so. Wondering if non pros might last longer between charge?

              • @mith: Think higher capacity is better, I doubt the loss from self discharge would be noticeable in a smart lock.

          • @andresampras: although I have been led to believe they may last longer per individual cycles too if used in low drain devices, I'm not 100% certain but the chemical makeup of the cells may be slightly different. I can't remember where I read that but I've seen discharge graphs and curves from tests in the past.

        • +1

I don't see the point in using rechargeables for TV remotes.
The financial saving is made with recharging the battery. I you never have to recharge it, then you actually spent more.

Toys are high drain enough to get rechargeables, but also run down charge fast enough that long term charge storage benefit is not required, especially when starting with 25% more capacity in the first place.

          • +5

@ESEMCE: One reason for me is that I have never had an Eneloop battery leak inside a device but I have had lots of Duracell and Energizers leak inside remotes.

            • @Oceadge: Yes I’ve never had my eneloop leak, other batteries will

      • +2

It's not inferior if you're using them for TV remotes etc, which is what I use them for. They're better for that purpose.

  • Can someone seriously tell me why everyone has a hard on for eneloops? Like serious question…

    • +3

      They're high quality rechargeable batteries.
Recharge them twice and they've probably broken even with a high quality Alkaline.

      • Even with a charger price included?

        • Pretty much yes.

My charger is now approx 27 years old.
So, I'm probably now at the stage that after 1 charge I'm at break even on an Alkaline.
