Tailgated by a psycho

I just been tail-gated for 50 minutes while driving down from brisbane to gold coast.
Offender used High beam and very close to the car and this psycho kept following me even when i moved out of the way.

Whats the best way to get these psychos. I want to prepare for next time

If its daytime turn on your lights. It looks like your braking .

    • +37

you'd have to be quite the (mod: edited) to not know the difference between rear lights and braking lights.

      • +12

We're talking about a tailgater here… wouldn't be surprised if flicking on your lights caused them to flinch

        • +1

Yep. I've done it plenty of times.
I've had a tailgater plough up the back of me before… and I can't cope again.

          First method, the lights technique.
Second, I either just pull-over to the side of the road… or simply take my foot off the accelerator until they go-around.

          • +2

@Ulysses31: Just make sure if they pull over too you drive off, there have been some crazy road rage incidents.

            • +1

              @Miss B: For sure.

I actually just remembered a full nutcase, from maybe a decade ago.
Was doing a u-turn, and tried to avoid giving way to me. He jammed his horn on, and came within CM of my car. Unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, I stuck my finger up. Yeah, not smart.

He caught-up & raced past me, pulled in front & jammed his breaks on in the middle of this 80KM/H 2 lane zone. I managed to stop in time, and he jumped-out of his car, and ran at me. Luckily, the the road was empty, and I can reverse fast & well. And by the time he got back to his car, I was long-gone & traffic had returned.

    • Did you really just say that?

    • +2

      "You're" not Your.

    • +5

I tried that once. At my exit the psycho floored it past me in much faster car, up the service lane, and hand brake slid to block the way in front of me. It was about 2am and I was pretty frightened. He got out and started beating my car as a semi pulled up, he jumped in his car and sped off at that point.

Idiot was wearing work shirt with his name on it, in a work car. Needless to say I rang them and told them what happened.

      • Did you find out anything later?

        • Nah no follow up.

  • +7

    Sorry to hear.

    • +4

      Why the negs?

      • +6

Not sure, but your comment turned the tide, now I can stop worrying about my KD ratio.

  • +64

    Install Dash cam.
    Obtain Reg# and Report.

    • +81

Don't forget to upload to Dash Cam Owners Australia for all of us to enjoy.

      • +26

“The 50-minute special episode you have been waiting for. We will take you on a thrilling journey from Brisbane all the way to the NSW border that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat.”

      • +10

Did you see the April Fools upload? My word, some absolute numpties out there!

      • After I read this comment I got stuck watching 2 hours of Aussie dashcam fails.
        Great stuff.

    • +1

Does this ever work. There is no where that said obtain Reg# and Report to the police will get anywhere.

    • +2

Police aren't interested in dash cam vids. They tell you if you want you can pursue legal action yourself. Tried a couple of times with various incidents and they don't want any part of it.

      • +1

Except for the guy who received a fine in the mail after police saw his own video that he submitted. That was funny lol

  • +63

Spray your wipers so the water flicks onto the car behind you.. infuriating them even more

    • +6

I do this. Most tend to back off pretty quickly and in the event they don't, it's pretty funny to watch their reaction in the rear view mirror.

      • +14

this works better if they're driving a convertible.

        • +4

Even better, empty out the water tank and fill it with diluted piss.

          • +18

            @Morphio25: Lol, diluted?

For when you're not mad enough to use full-strength, undiluted piss but you still want to get your point across?

What's the dilution ratio you normally use? Is it 1 part urine to 4 parts water?

Just trying to wrap my head around your restrained and considerate road rage habits.

          • +1

            @Morphio25: Undiluted diorreah works best.

        • +1

It works even better if you fit an extra washer bottle, a switch to change between the two, and fill the second one with goat/cat urine.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: What ratio of goat to cat urine do you recommend? And how do I get the cat urine back out of the kitty litter? It all seems to soak in.

    • +4

There's a time and place for that, but just to be clear, don't do this if there's an actual psycho who doesn't care if they crash into you

      • +5

Agree and this is always worth remembering. I had a horrifying experience years ago now where the guy actually jumped in front of me in peak hour traffic, then jammed on his brakes so that I ended up so close I couldn't move and got out to spit on my window and shout abuse and hit my window requesting I wind it down!

Never mess with crazy. They may be in the wrong but if they're a genuine sociopath you can't predict their actions as you want a rational functioning adult.

        • +1

Yep. As much as we'd all like to get out and clean their clock, the ramifications of a physical confrontation in traffic can be life changing. Better wind the windows up, lock the doors and record as much as you can, as safely as you can.

          • @Sxio: what if the psycho starts hitting your car and making dents, what are you gonna do about it

            • @kiwiyonip: I don't know man. Depends on a few factors. But I'm a pretty big dude and did a ton of jujutsu in the day.

I would still hesitate. I don't want to get stabbed to death by some psycho on the road. But in your scenario, be pretty hard to just sit there with someone damaging my car. Thankfully I've never had to make that choice.

              • @Sxio: yeah, sometimes it's not the stabbing that you should be wary of, it's the small scuffles that can lead to something like hitting your head in the pavement and cause serious life-changing injuries. I know your jujutsu will come in handy and can choke him out, but you'll end up with bruises and cuts too for sure. I had something like this happened in 2018 and I injured my shoulder but the guy who started it all and damaged my car came out in worse condition, still not worth it though.

                • @kiwiyonip: Thanks for telling me man. Yeah I had a plumber come to my door a few years ago and he clearly wanted to fight, it was silly, over some shoddy workmanship but he was really steamed. I was tempted to go out there but my kids were home and only young, the oldest was 3 and my front area is all stones and concrete. One slip or wrong step and one of us could've been knocked out or worse and it was just too dangerous. Felt awful waiting inside for him to leave. He ended up sitting out the front for 4 hours, and when the cops finally came he spoke to them first and they told me to pay him extra to fix his work and that I was lucky that he even came over at all. True story!

    • +28

Not excusing the idiots actions but normally they don't target people for no reason.

      • I've been tailgated many times while doing slightly over the limit overtaking those in the left-hand lane.

Most tailgaters have no reason for what they do.

    • +55

      Probably refused to speed.

      • +47

If they're in the left lane sure, but if they're in the right lane get out of the way. It's not up to you to police the road. Also your speedo can be out of calibration.

          • +20

@AustriaBargain: I drive a car with company logos/phone number. I don't tailgate or speed anywhere, just use basic road etiquette.

        • +23

This, the amount of people that sit in the RHL and do 5 under is infuriating. Check your Speedo with a GPS to check, I've had some cars(nearly new condition) that were out by Nearly 10kph. The manufacturers seem to do this to annoy with us and "save our lives".

Im a reformed (mostly) tailgater, but you are welcome to neg me.

          • +6

@lew380: Doesn't give you the right to tailgate them which is very dangerous, unlike driving 5k below the limit.

          • -1

            @lew380: 5% factor of safety, if you're doing 105 you're at 100.

          • -2

@lew380: It's called 'under-clocking' and all manufacturers do it.

          • @lew380: Surely all our sat navs will have accurate speeds between each other?

          • +1

@lew380: The Australian standard for speedo readings is it must be no greater than actual but no less than 10% plus 4 less than actual. This is for 2 reasons. So you can’t blame the manufacturer for speeding if the display shows less and also to allow for differences in tyre wear and inflation. A worn tyre will display faster than a new tyre.

          • +1

@lew380: Only 5??? Try 10 or the occasional 20 under.

          • +2

@lew380: Its not illegal to be in the right hand lane unless its mire than 80kph

            • +5

@Tleyx: Correct - but it is definitely courtesy.

Stay left unless overtaking was drilled into me when I got my license (no I will not tell you my age). Other countries especially european will actively honk you and tailgate. Over there they are not the idiots, you're considered the idiot for being in the fast lane for no reason.

The amount of congestion that can be avoided if people simply kept the right lane free unless they actually needed to pass someone, I tend to agree with the europeans sometimes.

              • @Ramrunner: It isn't a 'fast' lane. I'd imagine the rule is for emergency vehicles more than for impatient reckless drivers.

              • -1

                @Ramrunner: wants to speed

tailgates when they don't get their way

                whines about courtesy

                good luck with that champ

                /slows down to 78

                • +4

@GrueHunter: Where did you deduce I want to speed from my comment? I don't speed mate. Happy for you to disagree with my comments or opinions, we're all here to give opinions but don't lie and put words in my mouth. I have 0 demerit points and have had for over 2 decades. Can you say the same?

I also never said that I tailgate by the way before you go down that route. I don't.

Everything I stated is fact. My only opinion given was based on the fact that I often see 3 or 4 cars driving side by side in all lanes doing the same speed and clogging up drivers that do actually drive to the speed limit. If you're not overtaking, you're not supposed to be in the right lane. THAT is not my opinion, on the freeway, THAT is actually LAW.

And as for @filmer, you're also assuming it's impatient reckless drivers. I'm sure they wouldn't be "impatient and reckless", if they get to do the speed limit and move past slower cars because right lane drivers are actually doing the right thing and moving over if there's room to do so and they are not actively overtaking. We all share the road. Courtesy should prevail.

You guys make some very emotional assumptions about me. You don't know me and nothing in my comment said I do those things. My opinion was I agree with the Europeans sometimes. Totally different to any actions.

If you have nothing to add but personal attack and lies maybe don't add anything at all?

          • +6

@GrueHunter: Pretty sure legally, unless you're overtaking you shouldn't be in the right lane.

            • @Sxio: No its not always

            • @Sxio: It's an overtaking lane effectively, but not written in law unless it is expressly called an overtaking lane.

              • +1

@lew380: Um yeah it's definitely written in law and most states have very similar rules.

                https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-r…

                Keeping left;

When driving on any multi-lane road with a speed limit over 80km/h, you must keep out of the right lane unless:

you are overtaking or turning right, or all lanes are congested.

If the right lane is a transit lane, this rule applies to the lane immediately to the left of the transit lane.

            • -1

@Sxio: So…you and three other idiots don't understand the law then

Look at the speed I posted

              Go read the law again

Also it's really hard to hear you from up here in front, can you type louder

          • @GrueHunter: This guy probably walks up decending escalators because he can. The sovereign citizen army defending, their right to be a @#$%.

    • +4

      Think we've found the tailgater…

    • +1

Your reply deserves all the down votes

    • +2

Obviously OP dared to use the road at the same time as this moron.

    • +1

      Nice victim blaming mate

  • +81

Drive to the nearest police station.

  • -7

Stop at gas station and if he follows say you’re calling police.

    • +27

Get off at yatala pie exit so there are witnesses

(And also their hot chips with gravy always hit the spot)

    • +25

Not many places selling gas anymore, sadly for people with falcons.

    • why ppl downvote this comment?

      • +9

Because he is calling a servo a gas station… mildly annoying to see aussies speaking american english instead of australian english.

  • -1

    Change states

  • +4

    Grab the hand brake

    • On the tit?
      .

  • +41

I had this happen to me before.

It didn't matter if I changed lanes or went faster, the tailgater still continued to tail gate me.

What finally worked was going gradually slower and slower and slower, from 110 km/h until about 40 km/h, then the tailgater left.

        • +14

Yeah I don't know why you're getting negged going 40 on the freeway is dangerous

          • +1

@drilly: How is it dangerous if there is only 2 cars on it… The one being tailgated and the other tailgating it.

            • +2

@RSmith: because driving at 40, you won't know when the next car travelling at 110 or more will hit u from the back?

              • +21

                @StephBlanks:

because driving at 40, you won't know when the next car travelling at 110 or more will hit u from the back?

If you are doing 40 while being tailgated then you have a large metal buffer between you and anything approaching at 110.

          • +7

            @drilly: Tailgating is more dangerous.

              • +19

@lew380: Tailgating makes you the psycho/dangerous driver. The drivers will learn when the police fine them/revoke their licence or their passengers express feeling unsafe/make fun of their poor driving ability.

If there's a 50 metre gap in front of you that should reduce the likelihood of you getting in a pile up or experiencing road rage. It also aids in reducing congestion as opposed to everyone squeezing in as tightly as possible
