[eBay Plus] Pay $0 Variable Fees on 3 New Listings (April 2023) @ eBay AU

1740

It's back again for this month (though, we are down from 5 to 3)
This has saved me a stack, so well worth it (you can also stack it with the 3 free postage labels for ebay plus too: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/766112)

Thanks

3 per month over the next 3 months. Thanks OP

    • +2

Definitely per month? IE resets on the first of next month. My end date when I activate the current three shows 30/06/2023 11:59:59 PM

      • +3

Looks like it. Have a read of the T&C’s: https://pages.ebay.com.au/q2sellplus3fvf/

The promotion resets on the first day of every calendar month starting 1 April 2023 until the end of the Promotion Period (each referred to as a "Cycle").

  • Does that mean i will pay $0 fees when i list and sell an item? up to 3 times?

    • +9

Yes and no. You pay $0 for the Final Value Fee (the big one), but you still pay the 30 cents fixed fee (no biggie) for each transaction

      • +1

        Thank you!

  • +4

Great, they've been running a lot of these lately. Must be a sign of hard times. But I wish this would also apply to relisted items, would save a great deal of buggering around if I didn't have to recreate the listings.

    • +3

      DO NOT FALL FOR IT.
You can't even change it from listing to auction.
      Such a stupid trap

    • +8

You can "sell similar" and it copies all the information from the old listing but doesn't count as a relist.
Still not as quick as a relisting but if you're creating from scratch, this will save you a lot of time

    • If your relisting the same thing best hit "sell similiar" instead of "relist item" and if stupid eBay relists your item automatically then cancel that listing and do "sell similiar" hit keep photos, just to be on the safe side, you can get on chat if a relist sells and they didnt honour the no variable fees but no guarantees theyll honour it but so far they have for mine

Edit: going by my sales the market on eBay, fb marketplace and Gumtree has dipped dramatically almost have to give away my stuff lolz, sales usually great during school holidays not this time,.. dare a call it a recession 👍🤣😅😂

  • +13

These promos alone make eBay Plus worth it.

    • +20

Agreed, but I’d say that a bit differently: These promos are the only thing that make eBay Plus worth it.

      • +2

Agree! eBay plus is trash value as a buyer imo, and only worth it for sellers.

        • +3

There is definitely value for buyers. I have saved $588 so far with Ebay Plus even before the cashback membership promo.

Ps. I am not a shill for Ebay.

          • +2

@Unseatingcargo1: That value is based on express post upgrades mainly. I personally see very little to no value in that when prime have 1 day delivery on most of the things on eBay. Comparing prime to eBay plus as a buyer, it's trash

          • @Unseatingcargo1: Agree certainly eBay plus theres value for buyers , for example the PLUSDELIVERY and PLIDFY codes for $17 off postage costs and you dont have to be a yearly plus member and pay for a year, just signup for one month at $4.99 still ahead by $17 - $4.99 = $12.01 plus ya got the rest of the month to buy more shit you didn't need lolz, important about eBay over fb marketplace and Gumtree it's much more safer when it comes to buying something delivered

      • $30 gift card every year.
$5 off every month on eBay plus items.
The extra 2% off during promotions can be pretty significant.
Wider range of items compared to Amazon. Both new and used.

  • +1

I wonder how many more free Sendles we'll get….

    • There's 3 free postage labels for either Sendle or Auspost

    • I got a free sendle label last month, worst thing I ever did. Wasted three days waiting for them to collect and they never did in the end. I had to complain to ebay and they helped me make a free aus post label and i kist took it to the post office. Will never use sendle again 😒

      • +1

It varies by area since they use the local couriers please driver. I've only ever had that happen once out of about 8 times.

        • I've used Sendle numerous times. I've had a few cases where the driver didn't pick up but it was automatically scheduled for the next day and then picked up then. I think I've had two missed days in a row as the worst case. Certainly heard some bad cases, i think I'm fortunate enough to live in a good service area. Also courier they use is 90% of the time CouriersPlease, I have had Fastway/Aramex a few times though

  • +2

Thanks OP wish it was 5 though.
    Ebay is screwing with us..

    • +5

Not as good as 5 yeah, but better than 0

  • If all your listings are fixed prices and you're selling a few expensive items among a bunch of cheap ones, there's no way to ensure the 0 fees go to the expensive ones right? Because the cheaper ones will probably sell first.

    • Sell three , any three and then pull the rest till next month.

      • +1

That's not what they’re asking though. It’s about maximizing value.

If you sell 3 cheap items with this promo, you’ll save a few bucks because the variable fees for those 3 sales will have been low.

But selling 3 expensive items with this promo (provided you’ve got them to sell) could save you hundreds of dollars.

    • +4

That's right. The way I deal with this is either:

      1) List only the expensive items to begin with in hopes that they'll sell, and if they don't, then list the cheap ones - but this is a race against time.

      2) List everything, but marginally increase the price on the cheap ones to begin with (thereby deincentivising their sale) and then drop their price when you're ready to give up on the expensive ones selling. I reckon this option is the best of both worlds because even if the cheap items sell, you've sold them at a slight premium.

    • +1

No there’s not. Unless, as furiousgeorge said, you take the cheap listings down until the expensive ones have sold. When mine roll over from the previous promo, I only do ‘Sell Similar’ on the pricier items, and leave the cheaper items as is, so they don’t count for the promo.

  • Quick question: The Free fees apply on the first 3 Listings LISTED OR first 3 listing SOLD (i.e. I listed 10 listing, then free fee will apply to first 3 listings sold) ??

    • +3

First 3 sold, provided the listing was started during the promotional period. So yes, your example is correct.

      • Thanks mate

    • +2

Uhh, no. There's no surplus to be made because you're paying and receiving the same amount of money minus listing fees (30 cents per listing once sold), so you'll actually make a 30 cent loss every time you buy your own item.

I suppose (and definitely not suggesting this) it could be a cheap way to boost your feedback score but I'm almost certain that would be against eBay TOS and would potentially get your account banned.

      • What about using a voucher/code on the product ($5 off for ebay plus members each month) and then paying with ebay gift cards? I wouldn't do it and i don't think it would be worth it but I wouldn't say no you can't

        • +1

Ah right, I didn't think about buying promos. Ok, true so it could work hypothetically. But still, really not worth it for the aforementioned reasons.

            • +1

@nsingh21: Well, do what you want but consider the consequences. In addition to potential account bans, they might also want their money back.

            • +4

@nsingh21: If you do something dumb like use one eBay account to buy from another or get a family member to buy from you, eBay will probably notice at some point and you will earn yourself a permanent ban (which will follow you around)

              • -1

@King Tightarse: Thanks on this. Probably won't then :-(
How does the premanent ban follow around? Cannot reg on eBay ever again?

                • @nsingh21: Via your ID (you need full ID to sell on eBay) also have a look at browser fingerprinting.
Similar to Facebook. Yes, if it happens they won't even answer when you ask why

            • +1

@nsingh21: Lol, you're abusing the system to "make" $4.70.

    • +2

      That's is just pathetic honestly.

  • +1

Thanks OP! Love to see it earlier this month.
Please add the "eBay seller fees" tag to your post.

    • I just went to, and it looks like it was already there (or it was added by someone after the fact?)
      Thanks

  • I want to use this in conjunction with the free postage label offer, but I’ve listed 10 items today and all of them have a postage cost specified.

Will the buyer be made aware of the fact that postage was free (ie. does it say it on the label)? And if so, should I change all my listings to free postage until I exhaust the 3 free labels and then edit the remaining listings to have a postage cost?

    • +1

Buyer only sees the item and postage price you set. They won’t know how much you actually pay for postage.
You can choose to pass on the savings to the buyer or pocket the postage costs. You might get a quicker sale on the former option

      • Thanks for the clarification. I thought that maybe the actual postage label might have the price on it.

  • would this "deal" still work if i only signed up for the 30day trial and just cancelled it at the end of the month? i can sell 3 things in a month

  • If I’ve already got items listed from the March promo, And I do not accept this offer, can I send offer to the buyers and still get no fees or does sending offers to buyers void the 0% seller fees?

  • I've totally shifted to FB Marketplace for selling. I keep ebay plus for this though, as I prefer to sell Phones etc. on eBay still.

  • Just copped a FVF for my last remaining (March) listing and when I rang to question it I was told the old "must be a new listing" routine which is interesting as none of the other four were either. It seems that this is eBays 'go to' BS excuse now wherever people experience any kind of glitch and they used 'sell similar' no matter what the actual problem was

    • So the "Sell it yourself" link wont count and you get charged the full amount?

      • No they just say that whenever it glitches- I use 'sell similar' all the time and it works fine

        • +2

Just a word of warning, had this conversation with their support chat:

          eBay 11:28 AM
The reason you are charged fee on this, is because you listed item on 06th April 2023, which is eligible time period, but you relisted this from an early listed item - xxxxxxxxxx , and because the promo offers are for new items ( Listed afresh from a new draft) , this offer is not applied to this one.

          Me 11:29 AM
I have been specifically careful for not relisting, I have been using "sell similar".

          eBay 11:30 AM
Sell Similar or Relist, both are not applicable, and you just need to create a new draft.

And that was their final word despite be arguing that terms and conditions specifically do not mention not applicaple when using "sell similar". And that of course it should be considered a new item and ad, as it is similar not the same . But yeah, in vain, they essentially scammed me out of $17 by charging the fee.

          • @jakentta: eBay chat staff will routinely misrepresent situations or outright lie to avoid responsibiliy/cost to eBay. It's like the polar opposite of Amazon's chat staff.

            • +1

@myfeetarehappy: That's why I had another go with a different staff member, but was told the exact same rubbish. I am hating eBay more and more, but at the same time it seems to be the only place with big enough market for selling some stuff.

              • +1

@jakentta: Keep trying - 3, 4, 5 times. You will eventually get one that will play ball.

Try once in the morning and try again at night in the chance you’ll get a different team.

It could be that you ended up in the same team where they share the same crap tricks on how to bat off customers with crap and increase their KPI with minimal time spent to resolve problems.

    • Sold an item I listed after the promo was announced and was charged fees. Went to double check this page and clicked the link only to find out that I had just accepted the promo this moment! Any chance they will reverse the fees?

      • +1

No chance. Your best bet is to cancel, relist, then immediately contact the buyer and ask if they would mind re-purchasing and tell them sorry you had an eBay glitch.

        • +1

Thanks. Their customer service was brutal the last time I made contact.

Buyer already payed for the item and money has been payed by eBay. Lesson learned.

        • Any other traps to look out for with eBay?

  • I just received this same offer and it stated as being valid until 30/06 when I accepted it yet now after checking again it has changed to end of April expiry. I will just create new listings for any unsold items on the last day I guess :-)

    • +1

      When does the promotion run?
The promotion runs from 00:00 (AEDT) on 1 April 2023 and will be available for a limited time only, for as long as advertised on the eBay.com.au site (“Promotion Period”).
The promotion resets on the first day of every calendar month starting 1 April 2023 until the end of the Promotion Period (each referred to as a "Cycle").

So it'll probably "reset" on 1st May and 1st June.

    • Same here

  • Ebay dumb dumb here, you still have to pay the 2.9% fee to utilise PayPal right?

  • does this mean items i listed in April will have to be cancelled and re-listed on 1st May to be eligible for $0 Variable fees in May?

    • +2

No. Anything listed on April 30 should still qualify for the $0 fee until it is sold - for 30 days after it is listed, even if it is sold in May - as long as it is listed in April.

Use the May promotion for other new listings.

The trick is - on April 30, end any listing that hasn't sold (even if it has 7 days remaining) and relist them - use "SELL SIMILAR".

That way you maximise the promotion.

      • Don't use "sell similar", see my comments above.

        • +2

What if you tried again and you “LIE”?

For a relist, they can see which item you relisted from.

For a ”sell similar” it is essentially a new listing with no link to the previous listing.

The rep will see a previous listing that looks the same as the one you just sold of course - but “LIE”.

Tell them that you created a brand new listing but all you did is copy/paste the HTML.

They have no way of knowing you lied because the sell similar is essentially a new listing with no linkage to the previous listing.

It is technically a “copy” of your previous listing - no different than if you created a new listing and copy/pasted the HTML. The sell similar feature just saves you the effort of copy/pasting.

If the eBay reps routinely make up crap, then you should have no qualms about lying.

        • I’ve used sell similar every time and the promo has applied every single time

          • +2

            @I Smell Pennies: EXACTLY!

It’s obviously a glitch that happens to some users.

The eBay reps are obviously making up crap.

Last time it happened to me was when I accepted a promo and listed immediately. It could be a timing thing like the promo took a little time to register in the backend so effectively I listed “before” the promo was activated. So now I would accept and list a few hours later.

I’m just trying to offer strategies for getting the fee refunded/waived - just lie to the rep and say the listing was brand new and not a relist and not a sell similar.

Sell similar is technically the same as a new listing. It just saves the user the hassle of copy/pasting. There shouldn’t be a way for the rep to identify that it is a sell similar and not a new listing

Relisting - generally keeps the same item number. A sell similar will have a brand new item number. No different than a brand new listing.

            • @proudwanderer: According to a comment I seen earlier if you "sell similar" on the eBay app the promo doesn't apply

Sell similar is technically the same as a new listing. It just saves the user the hassle of copy/pasting. There shouldn’t be a way for the rep to identify that it is a sell similar and not a new listing

Correct. When you look at the URL on the sell similar page the item number is different

  • +1

Warning guys. Ebay with new tricks to not honour the no variable fee promotion. I was very careful with creating a new listing (ie: not relist previous sale), and I was expressly told by ebay support that in order to be eligible under the promotion, you must create and type out a new listing from scratch and cannot click on suggested item when creating a new listing. Utter bs and baited me into listing high value items. We probably need a class action against them.

    • +2

If you've been reading these forums, you should be aware that the ebay reps just make up anything to quickly deal with you and then move onto the next customer.

It's only KPI's that matter. It's not "new tricks". I've had this exact same answer half a year ago from a rep. They just make up whatever they can think of.

So don't believe anything they tell you. If they are refusing to refund/waive your fee don't get flustered - just try again with another rep and eventually you'll get one who will play ball.

      • Agree 100% proudwanderer. They are fountains of pure bullshit

  • Can you get banned from buying stuff from yourself? Got to sent something to QLD and figured this might work lol

    • Yes, if they do make the connection IE you might pull if off a few times but if they ever look into your account and find this, you will 100% get banned

      • I've done it many times. No problems yet…

        • +1

It's only a matter of time, eBay are pretty militant about this sort of thing.

        • You can fly under the radar for a while but if the accounts team ever turn their eye over your account and find this they just email you a ban with no reason given. It has happened to many people.

    • Maybe you can get a friend to create a brand new account - solely for this purpose.

Different name, address, IP, financial details, etc

Just pay back your friend for the amount spent on the “purchase”

  • +1

Promo has already reset for May. Shows in my Seller Hub Overview page as:

    Start: 1 May 2023 at 0:00 AEST
End: End: 1 Jun 2023 at 0:00 AEST
    Used/Left: 0 / 3

    • I guess we gotta make new listings again.

    • Testing if last month's stuff gets sold and still is zero fees under last month.

      • Just sold something under last month's promo. Only 30c and still have 3 free listings for this month so all good there.

    • yep, can confirm has reset for me

  • Oh so this is a mobthly thing? For every plus member, guaranteed?

    • doubt it's a guaranteed thing, but we have been getting it almost everu month or so for the past 12 months

      • +1

From memory, the first month they offered it was September or October last year - so it's been more like 6 months. Also, the offer has changed quite a few times: some months had 5 free listings, others had 3. Some didn't even start until mid-way through the month.

So yeah, there are no guarantees it'll continue. It's up to eBay when they want to pull the plug.

Even the current deal's T&C's mention the end date is at their discretion:

        • The promotion runs from 00:00 (AEDT) on 1 April 2023 and will be available for a limited time only, for as long as advertised on the eBay.com.au site (“Promotion Period”)
        • eBay reserves the right to cancel or change the offer at any time.
