Powerboard with Longer Cable

Can anyone suggest an inexpensive powerboard with a 2-3M lead, preferably non-crap (i.e. not AliExpress sourced)?

4 ports fine, switched is nice but not necessary.Surge protection not required or wanted (in cheap boards I think it does nothing). Sub $20 would be great.

Things looked easy until I read sub $20.

And they all seem to keep the French bloke away nowadays…..

Bit of an ask at that price point. $24 lowest decent unit can find with 2m cable.

Not sure how long the cable is on the 4-port $22 one.

      Kmart to the rescue again.

      • It does all features what op wants for less.

    • Thanks for that. I have a couple of those Arlec boards, but all with shorter cables and hadn't been aware of the longer versions.

      I'll get some.

Why not use an extension cord?

    • Additional point of failure, if the join is behind a sofa or cabinet then I can't see that it's properly connected. For temporary use, no problems. But I'll leave these boards in place for years.

I'm used to UK plugs which as incredibly chunky and solid. The Oz socket and plug can get a fair bit looser, especially with the cheaper powerboards.

I prefer cheap and loose for temporary use.

So lady of the night then?

      • I've never had an extension cord work it's way free over time. If you were really concerned, I suppose something like this might help.

        • That's a fair point. Issues with fit seem to happen at the wall or on the board, but I've generally avoided extension cords with all my past purchases, so don't have much of a sample size to go on.

@rumblytangara: Cheap boards can certainly have this problem, but yeah, not the extension cord in my experience. The issue comes on the socket end, not the plug end. This, of course, leads to perhaps the real problem you have here, and that's getting a quality powerboard that doesn't allow plugs to work free.

            • @Seraphin7: Yeah, there's a real tradeoff for security vs price on this stuff.

These are the worst I've come across so far- half the sockets are unusable because the metal in them deforms and gets in the way of the plugs.

@rumblytangara: These are a little more pricey, but when you want a lot of points, and just want it to work, these are my go to.

@Seraphin7: Thanks. I am starting to conclude that Arlec and Cordtech are about the lowest rung of quality (anything less is Aliexpress and possibly unsafe) and that HPM/Belkin is the step up from this.

None of these brands existed where I moved from- I ended up with loads of reasonably price Schneider boards for my electronics clusters.

  • Merged from Powerboard with Long Cord (3+ meters)

Looking for powerstrip with a long cord which is roughly 3 meters long (or longer), with 6+ slots and is well built.

Was thinking about buying a extension cord for a powerstrip, but I read just now how that can be rather dangerous. I also read something about most powerstrips with long cords not being well so I'm looking for some help! Using in an office environment e.g. pc, multiple monitors.

Most powerstrips from reputable brands I have found are roughly 2 meters max.

      • Wow! I tried searching here and reddit first, but was using different words. Thanks for your help!

Edit: Just checked it out, most of the boards seem a little too sketchy

      source?

or is it Big Powerboard yet again at it trying to suppress the length of powerboard input cords for their own nefarious purpose?

Don't ask Big Power about the distance that electricity travels to get to your house.

    • IF anyone is looking for this, I've been using this for a week now. Was everything I needed and is working well. The outlets can be reversed so the big plugs don't cover the opposite outlet. Cord length is 3 meters. :)
