Kindle 4 Wi-Fi 6", $60 Woolworths (QLD Possibly Other States)

1440

So I've been looking for a Kindle Wifi for the GF. Called around and found out these are being sold at Woolies for $60, which i think is an amazing price. These things cost $79 in the US (with ads), and there's no easy way for Aussies to buy them. Checked around and DSE are currently selling these for $139, so yeah… imo good deal!

I purchased mine from Sunnybank, QLD but I called at least one other store nearby and they confirmed that they have stock and for the same price. As I understand, there's a new kindle with backlighting soon to be announced, which may explain why they're so cheap.

I haven't tested an Officeworks price match, so your mileage may vary.

EDIT: I don't think OW sells kindles, only kobos and some other ones. The cheapest kobo I saw at OW was $97. If you're the market for a kindle, get one now before it gets ozbargained!

"unexpected item in the baggage area"

      ARRGHHHH

      • +15

Should totally get % discounts for self service. After all, we're saving on their manpower/wages.

        • +2

That's why I don't use them! Make 'em work I say.

        • +1

I use both ways. It's nice to create some demand for customer service staff before they are all obliterated if the big stores have their way.

        • +12

Man in front of me at self serve checkout : "Apparently I work here now"

        • It would be interesting to know how many people do scan through the cheaper fruit and veggies when they use self serve.

      • +6

I will remember to buy kindle with my bread next time i go shopping.

    • It actually says Australia's Fresh Food People now, they spent millions on a re-launch just to add "Australia's" (and people that worked there had to wear stupid white shirts)

  • anyone check other states?

  • +4

fyi you missed out on 30 FF points :(

  • +5

If someone finds this in Melbourne please post here, I want to be a good son and buy one and some books for my mum to enjoy on her holiday.

    • +2

No go at Ivanhoe either. Still $139.

  • +1

Wouldn't exactly call DSE's price a "rip-off" considering there's basically no margin in these at all + Amazon sells the same model for $120 shipped without Aus warranty - just lucky Woolies are doing some ridiculous clear-out. Will try my locals in the morning - thanks for the heads up OP!

    • +3

Anything sold on Amazon (to Aus) carries Australian warranty…

      • Right you are, thanks for the clarification.

      • Sounds interesting. Can you provide a supporting link?

  • +3

Checked at Ferntree gully Melbourne, they were on special but not for $60, they were about $111

    • +2

      Thanks for letting us know.

  • Kobo vs Kindle? Any difference? i know to some of you the question may sound stupid, but im looking for something to read ebooks mainly epubs and pdfs. Simply just reading so no need for all those fancy tablets.
    could anyone help?

    • No significant difference. IIRC Kindle doesn't support epubs but that shouldn't be a problem.

EDIT: I should check link next time before hitting reply :)

        • thanks guys for ur replies. Did a quick check, basically Kobo's screen is slightly larger and has a SD card slot which u could use to expand the capacity whereas Kindle doesn't.

Apparently Amazon is giving out 40% off on the entry-level ereaders (Kindle 4, both with-ad and ad-free). BUT this is only applicable to Amazon.com Rewards Visa Card holders.

hmmm, trust me that storage is pretty much quite sufficient. The largest book I have read is only 16mb large(Steve Jobs book with lots of pics). Unless if you put photos and heaps of graphic novels, it should suffice.

        • it you meant the biography of steve jobs by walter isaacson, mine is only 4.2mb. How did yours get all the way up to 16mb?

        • I have a kobo and couldn't be more happy with it. They look better and have a way nicer UI than the kindle, however of course this is subjective.

        • +4

Maybe his has the Appendix listing all the patents and the stupid court cases. That would take up some space.

        • +3

Probably loves Steve Jobs so much that he downloaded it 4 times

        • +1

Also, Kobo (and Sony) can do PDFs well. You can also borrow ebooks from the library on these but not the Kindle.

    • +41

Library card. Millions of books. Unlimited battery.
Weighs 2 grams but is region locked.

      • Accidentally negged! Mod please revoke!

        • You can revoke it yourself. Hit the "Votes" link up the top (just below the deal title), and you can revoke it from there.

        • haha i see what you did there

        • Done! Thanks!

      • -1

have you tried carrying 10 books to work on the train?

      • Our library also has ebooks you can borrow/download for free.
Amazing as I was able to download Eyewitness Travel guides to my tablet and bring it with me overseas.

  • I just got one for $60 at Taigum QLD..they had 2 left when they closed at 9pm.

    • Two weeks ago they were still selling at $99 and I ended up buying Kindle 3 3g for $109.

  • Just to clarify… are these different to the Kindle's here on OzB a month or two ago??

    • Same ones. Looks like its QLD only at the moment

  • Do all woolworths sell kindles or just certain ones?

    • +2

Some do and some don't, my store doesn't. If you're desperate for one of these $60 Kindles, call your local store(s) and get them to check prices and stock levels before you go.

  • Im guessing these kindles are refurbs?

    • +3

woolworths selling refurbs? doesnt sound right :/

    • +3

Doubt it. The one I got at $99 a couple of months ago was new. Probably just clearing stock.

    • Nope brand new

  • +3

No go at Tuggerah, NSW a few moments ago. Scanned at $111.

  • +1

Just checked with a friend doing night shift at woollies wentworthville (Sydney). Not on sale.. They are selling for $160 :(

    • +1

Checked it at Parramatta (NSW) and it has been out of stock for 4 weeks and the price is very stable.

    • $111 at marrickville NSW :(

  • Looks like only for QLD.

  • ill check up here in cairns tomorrow :)

  • Does Brisbane CBD (MacArthur) Woolies sell Kindles? I don't recall ever seeing one, same with my local Woolies.

    • Not every Woolies has them, and sometimes the staff aren't even aware of it even when they do. When I got mine a couple of months back I had to ask the service counter to show me what stock they had.

    QUEENSLANDER!!!

  • are these the specs ? http://dicksmith.com.au/product/A3470/ 2gb internal memory is rather limited as i want to use it for web browsing. can it support 32gb micro sd cards or other external storage devices? ref "does not connect to WPA and WPA2 secured networks using 802.1X authentication methods;" thats another worry never the less its priced reasonably.

    • +3

Yes 2GB, no expansion slots. Believe me you don't want to browse the web on this except in desperation, even though there is a browser under the experimental menu. For one thing there is no pointing device and you move from link to link using the arrow keys. The keyboard is on screen and you select the letters by the arrow keys too.

It's an e-reader for e-books. If you want a pad, get a pad.

    • 802.1X is more a corporate form of wireless authentication, shouldn't be a worry for home users.

  • +1

Doesn't support my wifi setup. The question is why the limitation?

    • Works fine with my G router. What doesn't work for you?

  • Got one! Thanks OP

  • +1

Got one from Woolies @ Camp Hill. There were none left at Buranda. Thanks OP, great price!!

  • Anything in SA?

    • Just picked up the last one from Mawson Lakes. It is at $60.

  • Just got one too! Great stuff!!

    • where from? Which store ? any one in Melb ?

  • Cheers

  • Nothing at Burleigh, Gold Coast

Anyone know who sells them on the Gold Coast?

    • +1

      Helensvale mate :)

      • Do they have them for $60 there?

    • +1

Ashmore had about 10! I just got 4 for family!

  • Safeway in Vic (Frankston) has the 3G wi-fi (not keyboard) on special for $109 which they are advertising as half price.

    • is that the kindle touch 3g?

      • +1

no its a keyboard 3g, just grabbed the last one at coburg(VIC)

        • Any chance of a receipt?

      • +4

Just note that the only thing you can do with the Kindle Touch over 3G is download Amazon books.
The older Kindle Keyboard 3G allows you to surf the web.

I didn't realise this before I upgraded to the touch - wish I still had my keyboard.

        • Whoa. Thanks for the head's up. Definitely going to take better care of my older 3G kindle! Is great when overseas as I can use it to check emails (if slightly painfully) etc for free…. locally I can always tether off the mobile so no great advantage to having the 3G version.

        • +3

Just don't go too crazy with it, Amazon has put a 50MB/month limit on it.
          http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/amazon-kindle-50mb-limit-…

        • Yeah. The Kindle keyboard is very helpful if you need to surf the web overseas in an emergency. Too small screen but it works !! Bought mine from a previous DSE sale via graysonline for $99.

      • No, it's the Kindle 4, it has the 5 buttons across the bottom only.

  • Nothing from NSW Ermington, Wentworthville or Parramatta Westfield.

    • Thanks, saved me some time (and money)

Will try a couple of WA stores today but not holding my breath.

    • Any WA stores selling it? Or no luck for WA?

Where next for the next cheapeast kindles in perth?

      • +1

Woah.. a neg just for asking that? jesus - what is with some people on here? Was just a simple question…

        • +1

Guess someone misshit or you pissed someone off and they are following you around.
Here, I'll fix it up for you :)

        • -1

maybe it was the grammar/spelling police.

          cheapeast

          That doesn't look right?

        • My bad.. honest typo, but still, unless my entired sentence was written in ghetto speak then I could understand?

haha thanks King Tightarse… you didn't have to but appreciated in good humour :)

        • Entire*** Sorry, couldn't resist :P
