Nulon APEX+ 5W-30 Full Synthetic Long Life Engine Oil 5L $39 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-store) @ Repco

220

Some decent quality fully synthetic oil not the cheapest all time price but good if you are due for a change. I've been using this instead of Castrol Edge for my last few changes and am pleased with it. Seems to be cleaning up my engine quite nicely as the first two changes have been quite dark.

  • Desperate for a mineral deal!?

  • "Seems to be cleaning up my engine quite nicely as the first two changes have been quite dark"
Or your rings are kaput, or it's too thin for your engine, or your engine was made to very loose tolerances

    • Doubt it. Engine is a 2AR-FE which can have anything from 0w-20 to 20w-50. Previous owner was using cheap semi-synthetic. My last change (3rd on this oil) has come out much better.
Thank you for your Oz2cents tho

      • BTW not trying to a wise guy, Just thinking out loud as it were. Other possibilities include this oil having more detergents in it and yeah, giving your engine a clean out.
Many engines are made to fairly loose tolerances these days, supposedly to negate the wearing in period and people are surprised by higher than expected oil use from blow by, even at very low kms.
Does your use much service to service?

        • All good only in jest.
I’m at ~200,000 and don’t consume enough to even warrant a top up but change pretty frequently approx every 10,000 sometimes sooner. If I notice any consumption will probably up to a 10w-30.

I have a Camry from the generation after the oil consumption issue (think it might have been the 2GR-FE?)
My transmission on the other hand which I think is the common torque converter issue

It's all about the low tension piston rings to fudge the fuel economy tests:

Of course, you now have to put up with the oil burning to save 0.1l/100km 🙄

    • very loose tolerances, every Toyota ever lol.

  • This oil is the new API SP spec.

After switching to this oil from the old API SN Nulon 5w-30, it seems to require more regular top-ups between oil changes for my 2013 Subaru Forester.

So I'm going to be trying a different oil after this, probably another API SN spec.

In saying that, YMMV. I would choose API SP over SN if my car didn't have oil burn issues.
