Seems like a good deal. Can any one confirm what people usually use mini PC's for, besides the basic web browsing and office documentation

ESXi Virtual Server, just add extra RAM, network card and your preferred HDD's :-) They can be used for whatever but not so much for gaming. They are solid performers and reliable.

The pictured one is SFF (small form factor) and not like the "Mini" which are tiny. I see a link also noted for those here.

Home Assistant home automation. I use a laptop as it has battery though for backup power. Install in a VM for ultimate flexibility.

Beats Raspberry pi for processing power and flexibility though higher electricity consumption.

      • Any tutorial on home assistant/automation using this? I'm not familiar with it and it sounds interesting. Thanks.

      • How old of a laptop would run home assistant well enough?

        • That depends on whether you were going to run HomeAssistant on Windows. Windows itself requires resources to run.
          or
Whether you were going to boot the Notebook into Linux and run as a Docker container. It would use less overhead compared to running on Windows.

        • I used to use a Surface Pro 3. Worked fine for my setup

          • @0 0 0: Have you ever tried raspberry pi to run home assistant?

            • @Jklaro: Yeah a long time back but Home Assistant was a lot more difficult to use back then. Was using Domoticz on a Pi Zero W as it was more user friendly. But a very simple setup back then

              • @0 0 0: You wouldn’t recommend using a pie now that home assistant is easier to use?

                • @Jklaro: WIth the price of a raspberry pi now, you would better off with one of these or a Lenovo M700. As it gets more devolped, HA will require more and more rescources so you may as well future proof it if you are starting now.

                • -1

@Jklaro: Nah Raspberry pi is harder to backup and costs more upfront for lower spec hardware.
I'd only go Pi if I was really concerned about power consumption.

                  • @0 0 0: Power consumption is a concern. If i could do the same thing using a fraction of the power that would be better.

    • MAME inside an arcade cabinet.

    • Plex, home automation, firewall/vpn/IPS, pi-hole, etc

The main PC is not a mini PC. If you are after something that has to stay on all the time and want to watch videos with newer codecs, go for a newer generation Intel mini N5005…N105 or N95 or N100.

    • This isn't a mini PC. It's "SFF" — the size of a large box of cereal. With a CPU that's 7 generations out of date. This is hard waste.

    • I have this exact PC hooked up to a 65" TV in the bedroom. Its mostly used as an HTPC for streaming videos, but also get used quite a bit for web browsing (e.g: checking those late night ozbargain deals ;) , online shopping and for an occasional work email that can't easily checked or replied on a phone). I also have 2xHDDs in RAID inside this used as a secondary backup for my primary NAS. I've had a PC in the bedroom as long as I can remember, its so convenient to have one hooked up to a big screen.

  • HDD, not SSD?

    • +3

it doesnt matter to most here… for $114 delivered you can afford to slap in a spare 240gb 480gb sata 2.5 ssd you got lying around

  • Warranty
3 Months Return to Base Warranty

  • Swapping out the HDD with an SSD would make a pretty good home office PC for basic tasks or for remoting in.

    • Sorry but what does it mean "remoting in"?

      • +1

Remote into the computer from another network or location.
So for example give this to your parents or have this as a headless unit (no connected display ) then use teamviewer or RDP to see what’s happening on the machine.

  • What's the advantage over this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334639190348

    • This is a G2 (a year newer). The other is a G1 comes with Win10 and a 120GB (only) SSD, This has no OS included and 500GB Sata (not SSD) HDD. Comes down to what you want it for but either are more for somebody in the know who are looking for a cheapie base system to their own setup rather than using as a day to day Desktop PC.

Although over twice the price, this newer HP Prodesk 800 G4 is decent as well and more ready to go out of the box for day to day use.

6th gen vs 4th gen (but to be honest performance on both will be average)

500gb hdd vs 120gb ssd (pick your poison but I have a few 500gb ssds from centercom at $29)

    3 months vs 1 yr

no os installed vs. installed but there's a pro key in the bios of both anyway

    • Pro Key in BIOS, usually yes unless it was originally purchased by a Corp who installed their own Open License and never registered the original OS install. A fresh install won't register properly with M$. I have had a few of those over the years.

  • how much is the monitor?

  • +1

No need for HDD or sata SSD. G2 will boot from M.2 in PCIe adapter and supports TPM 2 with bios update. Running a very fast Win 11 system on it here. For those interested I'm using a UGreen PCIe adapter and WD SN550 500GB M.2

    • That is the G2 SFF which is now not available in listing. G1 and G2 mini cannot boot from M.2 in PCIe.

      • Mind sending us a link for the M.2 boot drive limitation?

I'm looking at the Elitedesk G2 Mini, but can't find any explicit mention that it can't boot from an M.2 drive…

        • I can't find any explicit mention that it can. Let us know how you go. I can confirm it works on G2 SFF.

  • My parents Dell is about 8 years old and starting to slow down and get fan issues, will this one be okay, they just use it for the Windows games and internet browsing.

  • I wouldn't as it is also 8 years old and released around 2015.
If budget permits, this newer 2019 model HP Prodesk 800 G4 would be much better and incl 1 year warranty. It is ready to use out of the box so a lot less fuss.

  • Buy the dell 9020 for the same money as it does not need the power brick to run

    • HP 800 SFF PCs don't use a power brick as the PSU is internal.

  • 8GB 1 stick or using both ram slots?

    • Confirmed at least the G2 has 1 slot free

  • does this have pci slots? I want to install an extra network card in this computer.

    • +1

Yeap, I have a Quad card in mine as run ESXi. They have 2 x PCIe-x16.
