  • That's bang-good!
    Which ones are most quiet?

    • +4

Out of the 3 offered, Brown. But they will still be loud if you push the keys down all the way hard

      • Put rubber o-rings on the keys, and they will bottom out much better.

        • +1

I did with my red keys but with the browns I learnt to not bottom out they keys when I type

        • +2

Doesn't feel great, but it absolutely does mute the downstrokes. I use them at work.

You can get a nice compromise with firmer/narrower o-rings.

          • @Erwark: Got a link by any chance? Cheers

            • @bopter12: I bought them aeons ago, sorry.

I think 40A-L is the way to go? Get a second opinion, though.

    • +1

Reds and Browns will still be about the same, but neither are quiet.

      Blue is deliberately 'clicky'

Saw a blitz wolf keyboard, bought a blitz wolf keyboard

What's a good number pad to pair?

  • +3

I got one of these when they first come out.
The only annoying thing is the location of the "/?" key takes a bit of getting used to.
Other than that its pretty solid for the price.

Keyboards without End and Home keys should be illegal.

    • No end and home? Is there a key combo you can substitute? Use that all the time for work.
      Edit
Customisable FN function so should be able to do a workaround if you have three fingers

      • +2

Honestly if you use those keys for work you probably want a proper full size keyboard, using modifier keys suck it you use those keys a lot.

Favourite thing I've bought recently is a keychron V6 keyboard, they have extra keys you can bind, and opensource firmware.

        • +1

You don't necessarily need to jump straight from 60% all the way to 100%, though.

Lots of 65% keyboards have Del/Home/End to the right of enter, which is a great compromise, IMO. 75% and TKL are also quiet compact while offering most keys people want.

Obvious if you want a numpad, it makes sense to go fullsize.

          • +1

            @Erwark:

            75% and TKL

This is the sweet spot imo.

I just can’t find one for ~$60 that doesn’t suck. I’ve gone through 4 kogan $19 mechanical keyboard and refuse to use anymore (warranty covered or otherwise).

            • +1

@PainToad: I've had no issues with the wired rainbow $20 Kogan TKL red or brown. In daily use for ~2 years and no problems yet.

However, I too would be interested in getting my hands on a decent Bluetooth TKL that is Linux compatible (aka doesn't need Windows software to configure) and is budget priced.

The main criteria for me is usability for fast navigation while coding, which means modifiers, esc, arrow keys and ins/del, home/end & pg up/down in the correct place.

              • +1

@peteru: Looking for the same criteria with price < 60 && brown switch && Back light

                • @Indomietable: Initially I had a strong preference for brown, but after spending a couple of weeks on the blue keys, I don't mind either for typing comfort, speed or accuracy. The blue keys might actually have a slight (but only very minimal) advantage in that department. In terms of acoustic distraction and usability while on calls, the brown keys are the clear winners.

I haven't had the chance to try the red keys yet to form an opinion.

As a general advice, I'd suggest that people start on brown keys first - they really are the best all rounders.

              • +1

@peteru: The absolute gold standard of powerhouse keyboard software is VIA (runs on anything, very gritty control). However there isn't much in the <$100 space.

If you want a prebuilt, something like Keychron K8 Pro would tick every box but for like $180 full price.
VIA drivers (can actually run in browser or locally), wireless TKL hotswap with fantastic build quality.

      • Home and End are in the middle, so must be a key combo to use.

        • +1

Would be the Fn key. But ain’t no body got time for that while coding.

          • @PainToad: It's quicker to hit that key combination than to physically move your hand over to the Home/End keys.
Although I prefer having the "Fn" key to be where the caps lock is instead of the awkward position at the bottom right, much more efficient.

  • Thanks OP. compact mechanical kB with BT to boot.

  • +1

Mine came with a wobbly leg. That and the /? Position as @AmperSand mentions made me relegate this keyboard. Oh and keep a copy of the manual/bookmark the website for when you do a key combo and change from Windows/Mac layout. manual link here - have a look at the key combos - not something you will remember!

Lighting is also per-key addressable too! Which is pretty cool for such a cheap keyboard

  • Seems to come to US$30.01 for me. Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? I'm using the BG681040 coupon. Thanks.
