If you're after a 16" 2.5K portable monitor and don't need a touchscreen then this deal is a cheaper alternative to this US$165.79 monitor. Since it has a higher refresh rate this is a good option for those wanting to do some gaming on the go.

Featuring a 16" IPS display with 2560x1600 resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, up to 144Hz refresh rate with Freesync, 480cd/m² brightness, 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut, HDR, 1200 contrast ratio, 178° wide viewing angle, VESA mounting and dual speakers. There's two USB-C ports for display/power and power input, PD passthrough charging, Mini HDMI and a 3.5mm audio jack.

  • Nice is this the same brightness as the other one ?

I've found these way too dim in the past
    (Have a FHD option)

    • +2

480cd/m². Normally the 15.6" FHD budget offerings are 300 or 250.

  • +1

One of the best for specs/price i've seen so far. Might finally bite..

  • Can these monitors receive power from a laptop via a single USB-C cable? Or does it need an external power supply?

    • +3

I have a similar portable monitor and it can be powered by the laptop. It would drain your laptop power though.

  • Could be convenient. So, for use with your laptop you'd need to have a USBC PD battery right? I assume most laptop USB ports couldn't power it, and even if they could it would drain the laptop battery pretty fast. Great specs for the price.

    • +1

It can power it. But it would drain the laptop battery fast.

I'd like something smaller so I can connect to my macbook whilst playing gigs. I have a Samsung Tablet, I might be able to use, care of a Software link. EG Splashtop Wired XDisplay

    • I like how you think. I want one to connect to my DJ controller instead that's touch screen to choose music and maybe even create touch pad controls. Might do more research into it.

      • +1

I use Gig Performer on stage, with 2 keyboards, however the Macbook is off to the side (and non touch screen). There is also Duet display, that I was going to hookup to an iPad.
        16in would be too big.
My Keyboard has a display, but it is not compatible with gig performer or Mainstage.

  • I guess it is a good screen to use in DIY digital picture frame with Pi4

    • +1

Overkill for a picture frame lol, save money and get something 60Hz for that.

  • Out of curiosity what is the primary use case of these monitors?

    • +2

I can't put a normal monitor in my bag when traveling. Useful for hotels and working away from my office.

    • Also handy that this can be powered only by USB-C (Doesn't require AC power) for portable working.

      • +1

Yeah i can and have powered mine with a power delivery powerbank.

    • +1

I'm considering one for university exams, as they are open book and we use our own laptops, so having a second screen would make life a lot easier.

      • Are the desks big enough for another screen? I haven't sat an exam in like 15yrs

        • +1

Mine are always in lecture theatres, and due to the spacing you can always use the fold out tables on either side of you, so the screen would go on the one on the side.

    • We use them when we travel, work out of random offices for clients or in the kitchen/library without hauling our monitors around

  • I did this for the touchscreen one yesterday which may work here - open a chat in the app with HDHIFI from the product page and there may be an option to send a message to get an additional $3USD off $40 spend coupon.

    • Which one did you happen to get out of curiosity?

      • I went for the other one @Clear posted here because I wanted the touchscreen functionality: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/763760

        • Can you use touch screen with MacBook Air M1? Not sure if it’s worth having or not..

          • @nubzy: If the macbook has no touch screen then the portable screen wont either.

Touch is useful for other devices that have touch screen like other laptops with touch and tablets.

            • @xoom:

If the macbook has no touch screen then the portable screen wont either.

Is that unique to Mac? On Windows at least as long as there's a USB connection to the monitor the touchscreen will work.

              • @Clear: Correction. Apparently touch is not supported natively but you can install a driver to enable it but looks like it's brand specific.

                https://youtu.be/oO6AZj_V-JI

          • @nubzy: Im using it for windows and don't have a mac book so cant help with that one sorry!

  • Thanks OP, I've bought both this one and the touchscreen model to see which is better (noting this one is also lighter)

With the folding case this came to $217.45 AUD (ING) vs $249.68 AUD for the touchscreen

    • Mine arrived yesterday - looks great - colours look almost as good as my macbook and works with a single cable. Can get it to run at 60, 120 and 130hz too. Miles ahead of espresso displays

Downside is I can only select 2560x1600 res and have it clear but makes everything look tiny - there's no macOS scaling options without losing quality

  • Its showing 229.66 for me (with case etc). Am I doing something wrong?

    • +1

I think the post was for no case.

  • +1

There's also this similar one I was able to get for $205.04 using the next coupon up "AN18". Seems a touch brighter, and UPERFECT is a name i'm more familiar with:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004967096762.html?spm=a2…

    • +1

This HDHIFI monitor has 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut though which is superior to sRGB in terms of color. It also has a slightly higher refresh rate (though 14Hz difference means nothing). I don't think the 500 vs 480cd/m² brightness is as a big of a difference versus the color difference.

In terms of brand name difference, I doubt it's significant, as they're probably just OEM products with different brands slapped on top. I have seen the brand Uperfect for other peripherals too… not sure of their reputation when it comes to monitors. HDHIFI aliexpress listing has 7x amount of reviews with a touch higher rating 4.8 vs 4.7 stars

I'm unsure if the Uperfect also has pass through usb-c charging, which might be convenient for some use cases

      • +1

You're probably right about them being similar OEMs, but Uperfect page has much more followers and a way bigger foot print on amazon — team were also much more interactive in the product reviews, which was reassuring to me.

Anyway, doesn't make the difference for my basic use-case, but it might for someone else, so good pointing out on the colour gamut and passthrough — I will add though that the $205.04 price I paid includes the foldable case-stand thing.
