I still havent even played the first one yet lol.

Its in my pile of shame (backlog).

    • +3

Apparently you dont need to play the first to understand the second. Theyre separate from what ive been told

    • Same. Bought a long time ago but didn't even unwrap that.

    • Play style and game mechanics are similar but they don't follow same storyline. Took me a good 200+ hrs to finish the first one. I'd say go straight to Octopath 2

    • The value has gone up though my. Second hand copy sells for around $80 now.

    • +1

The second one is better -

The first one drones on a bit imo + the voice lines aren't complete, and the ones that are can be repetitive. Also, one of the characters speaks in 'Shakespeare' which gets pretty annoying.
The stories for the second one are more interesting and concise (because they to paid someone to voice them so they had to be, i think lol) + better game mechanics (night and day, interesting powers).

The only complaint I have with this game is the random encounters. I prefer JRPGs where I can see the enemy and choose whether to engage in the battle or not (like Blue Dragon, or Final Fantasy).
Other than that, it's a decent game to pass the time before Resident Evil 4 Remake and Starfield comes out lol

There's too many good games and some of them are huge! Currently paying p5r, replaying botw before TOTK release, and haven't even started OP1
      Still bought this though šŸ˜…

    Same price at EB too

The main story is roughly 55-60 hours of gameplay alone.
      Completionist is almost 95 hours.

This is a great game and great value.

      • +2

Lol I'm 11 hours in and just recruited the 5th. 3 more to go before going to chapter 2s….

    • $59 being too high is subjective.

It's like when I paid RRP $60 for World War Z on the Switch.
But considering I've pumped 200 hours into it.
      It's good value for me.

You pay $20-30 for a movie at the cinemas which lasts around 1-2 hours.but this game is an easy 50-60 hours of game play.

Obviously if you're just buying it to collect it's a different story.

    The first was great!

Anyone played the sequel so far? How is it?

    • +5

Playing it atm, I think it is a good step up from the first one. I enjoyed 1 but got burned out after about 50 hours and never finished it, this one I'll be sticking with.
Presentation in cut scenes is better, the weird sprite upscaling issue in battles as the camera moves from the first game is also cleaner (though switch is a little blurry overall) and the characters are more memorable and interesting for me so far.

I should have added a demo is up on the eshop and psn so well worth trying if you are curious as it is the first 3 hours and progress carries across.

      • Ok cool, sounds good, thanks for writing

The soundtrack in the first was amazing

    • I havnt played the 1st or 2nd, but I do follow Jason Schreier on twitter (games reporter for Bloomberg if not aware, really highly regarded) and he loves it so I pulled the trigger here

      • I miss the days Schreiber wrote for Kotaku.

Good deal. I started with the second one, never played the first. Story is separate. I'm enjoying it.

  • +2

First was fantastic. Beautiful art style

  • Dang just bought it last week for $69. Oh well its a great game

  • This game is great for those who like the 2.5 HD artstyle. I enjoyed the first game quite a lot, but found it difficult to finish as there is definitely drag towards the mid point. Some of the stories were extremely bland and generic. Given that you dont really have a main character theres limited character development and surface layered.

  • +1

I heard the story is a lot better in this one which is reassuring but the bar was as low as it gets in the first game. I don't understand why they don't bother writing compelling stories but if people are voting for it with their wallets, who am I to say it's wrong.

Gameplay of the first was okay. Beating Galdera was annoying cause of the 8 minibosses that you're forced to fight again if you fail but it certainly does force you to sit down and plan your party really carefully.

  • Oh wow look at that. Only managed to get it this price earlier by going to JB, price matching Big W and then using the perks voucher…

Have cracked it open, but haven't actually played yet xD

  • +1

    Catapult, go, go, go!

  • Is there much difference in performance between Switch and PS5?

    • -1

Don't think there'll be any performance boost playing this game on our ps5 when this is just a 2d game that can probably even run on a Wii

    • +2

switch runs on 30fps and ps5 runs 60 fps.

People underestimate the game just because it has 2d characters lol. The visual effects can easily win any new games…

      • šŸ’Æ!!

    • DualSense haptic feedback on the PS5, plus the revolution bump, which still matters even in 2D games imo
      Good write up here https://themakoreactor.com/news/octopath-traveler-2-switch-vā€¦

  • Damn, not even a month.

  • +2

Played 40+ hours of this game so far. If you loved the first one this is a huge improvement imo over it, there's a ton to do in this game and the story is much better (not much of a bar to beat but still.)

Definitely think it's worth the 59 dollar price, probably one of the best jrpgs on the switch!

  • Since this one is also on PS4, there's no doubt its price will get a decent drop in the future. I'll probably wait until it goes below $40 on PC like I did the first one.

  • -3

Is this one as bad as the first?

  • +10

Priced the same on EB eBay. Used $5 eBay Plus voucher.

    $54 delivered.

    • +1

      Sheesh! Thanks for that :))

    • +2

$5.90 off for me, ordered for $53.10. Thanks!

    • Thank you so much! I just pulled the trigger since $53.10 is unheard of for a new switch game. Hope you have a great week ahead. :)

  • Ugh! literally bought it for $69 9 days ago and EB is refusing to refund the difference as it is outside their 7 days!

    • If you have an eb membership you might get more days

  • Just bought from ebgames. Bezos no gud

  • Grabbed it through ebay, thanks to poster above

  • Ok got it

  • For anyone that missed out, it's back in stock and $10 Cheaper
