How does this compare to the Chromecast with Google TV?

The CCWGTV works amazing but sometimes it can seem a tad slow and I get out of storage messages but have run out of apps to uninstall.

    • +1

See past deal posts… Sooooo much talking about what these offer

    • I prefer the Google of late. Yes the Shield is better in every way, bar cost, but I've had non stop issues since the 2017 model with hdmi CEC. Frankly over it, sold both 2019 models.

      • Thanks, as tempting as this is at the price I think I will stick with my CCWGTV for now.

        • +3

Every time the CCwGTV stutters, the Shield doesn't.

That's the main difference in my experience, and that's with a 2015 Shield!

          • @XeKToReX: Did they stop updates on the 2015 Shield earlier than the 2017?

I found the performance of my 2017 Shield to not be as smooth as my CCwGTV. This is after a wipe and update of the Shield, so it should have been at peak then. I wonder if they messed something with an update along the way.

            • +3

@TheContact: All Shields are still receiving updates.

              • @trankillity: That's crazy. Better support than Google.

I guess my issue with it might be related to the CEC issues mentioned above. Navigating wasn't responsive with the TV remote and just made it feel sluggish.

      • +2

Had similar issues on my parents setup but not mine - must depend on combo - I bought an HDMI adapter that didn’t pass the CEC pin through which resolved my issues…. But there shouldn’t be issues

        • +5

I could go weeks without issues. Than non stop.

Had 2 virtually identical setups with 2019 Sony TV's and Marantz Receivers. One newer than the other.

This went on for years. Was so temperamental. Happened with different updates, tried every possible solution. New cables etc etc.

Some updates knowingly caused issues with many users too, including CEC.

Removed both Shields, using the inbuilt 9500g Android TV… No issues since with the receiver only on EARC.

Glad I got negged for stating my experience too, absurd site.

people be downvoting anything on here..lol

      • I know right? It was just a question and I upvoted.. lol.

        turning into reddit

      • +1

Yep. Download losers abound on Ozbargain!

    • I think if you have streaming solution that is working well, you really need a good reason to buy this. It's basically Nintendo switch hardware, so it's probs 4 times as powerful as competitors at $50 but you can't even install GamePass out of the box, I had to sideload Firefox as well, so you don't get updates through the playstore…

I feel a refresh with HDMI 2.1 & 4K @ 120hz must be just round the corner as well but really, I'd rather get something like this, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/751847

      • Hard to refresh a discontinued product.

        • +1

I mean "Shield 23" or whatever they call it. I am only assuming that there will be a new model eventually. Hopefully with AV1 support and HDMI 2.1. And a non crippled PlayStore.

Maybe they can enable GameStream again, since they pretty much force you to install NVidia Experience on PC and GameStream is all it's good for…
          https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/gamestream/19/50…

      • Plex Server with Transcoding in my reason to grab.

Don't need to replace my existing NASs and no longer leave on a fully featured X86 server to host plex transcoding :)

        $200 well spent

    • +1

I have both, it really depends on your use case. If you're just using it as a YouTube / Netflix…etc. box, then they're the same - I've not seen any real benefit to the AI upscaling for web content.

There are some areas where the Shield wins out, but they're more niche uses. For example, if you want to play Android games, play content off an external HDD/SSD as examples. The Shield remote is also nicer (I find the CCwGTV remote to be a bit like a pebble and just hard to grip and use, and easy to lose).

FWIW, I think the Shield is a better device but I prefer the CCwGTV for one singular reason - it can play YouTube videos at 1.5x and 2x, whereas the Shield does not seem to have this functionality. I'm not sure why, as they should both be the same YouTube app, but from online forum posts, it seems like a well-documented issue. I watch everything non-cinematic at 2x, so this is a dealbreaker for me.

      • +4

This app might solve your 1.5x on the shield. https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/

        • No HDR support though

          • @sween64: Probably doesn't need hdr for non cinematic streams

      • +2

The shield remote is truly excellent. Sometimes I wish it had a few extra buttons but that might make it less intuitive in your hand…

        10/10

      • +2

Strange, was just watching a youtube clip on my shield at 1.5x

      • +1

The youtube does have video speed option and it works well on shield.

    • +1

I would say it is an improvement except for one big issue…

If you use YT on the Shield it will NOT be able to play HDR content. Something about a hardware decoder or a chip or a codec, someone can help correct me. So if you enjoy watching HDR city walks or fancy HDR footage for your LG OLED, you'll need to switch back to the TV's native Youtube app. Not the end of the world but I find it annoying.

  • +2

Hmm Amex spend $300 get $50 back is still valid…

    • Cant see it in my offers

      • i think it was targeted, not in mine either

    • +4

      Yes, but this is $218…

  • +3

I was just about to post this. Bought one. Crazy good value! My chromecast with Google tv has been temperamental. I'm sure the shield pro will be better.

  • +10

Can’t be much mark up on this.
Almost makes you shed a tear for poor Gerry.

    • +17

      Tears of joy.

    • +1

They will likely be getting funding from nvidia to cover the initial loss of margin in the sale.

  • +1

Have the original shield. If I remember from 2017. Is this worth as an upgrade?

    • +1

Believe the AI up scaling would be the big difference.

      • +2

If you have a good TV, it's not any significant difference. The best changes are dolby vision support and the remote (which you can just buy separately anyway).

        • What if you have a crap TV? Like a Chinese budget 4k?

    • +1

Similar question but mine is 2019 version. It keeps playing up/freezing, is very buggy and slow/unresponsive 50% of the time. Running on the latest software version.

      • +2

There is no newer model. You have it.

        • Sorry. I bought mine in 2019, but figured out it should be the 2017 model.

          • @Bargain Fighter: I'd try factory resetting it first. Even a proper reboot can help.

            • @scuderiarmani: Thanks. Rebooted many times. Didn't help. May consider resetting it. Really don't want to go with this option as I sideloaded quite a few apps and set everything to the ways I want.

              • +1

@Bargain Fighter: I've found that's just an Android thing, useful every big update or so. I do it with phones too.

Usually makes it snappy again, atleast for a while.

      • +4

My 2017 was experiencing the same issue until I read a forum which spoke about the building of dust in the fan outputs. There's a known issue with the performance once it really starts to build up untouched dust, as it heats up and doesn't have much room to escape.

I think the first thing you can look to improve performance is opening it up and cleaning it out, or trying to get as much dust away from the external vent as possible to improve airflow.

Here's a decent video explaining how you can attempt to improve the problem.

    • +4

This price drop probably indicates a new model is coming soon. So may be worth the wait.

      • +13

        Heard that for 2 years….

HL3, Switch Pro…. Duke Nukem happened… So did Metroid Dread…. Maybe tide is changing….

        • +4

Totally agree. However, this time a new chipset has been developed.

        • +1

One can be optimistic though, given that Harrison Ford is taking out his whip for another adventure with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

      • I bought a CCWGTV 4k for now. It's not that compared to the 2022 Samsung OLEDs OS. But LG WebOS was much nicer with it's magic remote for me at least.. Almost purely use the Chromecast as a dumb chromecast for now.

    • In addition to what others have said you can only get Netflix Atmos on the 2019 model.

  • Thanks Op, I've finally pulled the trigger on one of these. I've wanted one for quite some time, perhaps about a year or two, but couldn't justify the expense.

    • +1

I have wanted one for nearly 10 years, but still can't justify the expense.

  • Thanks, been holding out because upgrade due soon but this is a decent price

  • -1

Any way to bring it down further, with cashback or gift cards or anything? Doesn't seem to be on cashback sites.

    • Amex cashback deal as above but requires $300 spend and is targetted

    • +3

Should be able to price match at The Good Guys and then stack with the $50 storecash offer using Zip Pay if you have an account.

      • Nice one!

        • Have you managed to price match it at TGG?

          • +1

@1000060: I didn't end up trying, saw it had been below $200 in the past so figured I'd wait. In no rush!

Also now available at Amazon so discounted gift cards etc can be used if you have.

      • If this price is still available tomorrow that is… phone sales line now closed for the day.

      • I did this and only just got credited $20 Storecash.
Pretty sure the promo was $50 for over $200 spend.

Did anyone else get the Storecash and if so, how much?

        • $50 storecash - credited last week

    • +2

"Why not just get something 3x the price?"

      • -1

the xbox series s is at least 2x price

        • You can get one on facetree for 250

    • +1

I think this is better at certain codecs etc

    • I have one of these as well as a PS5.. the difference is night and day with what the shield can do playing video. Doesnt flinch with any codecs I've thrown at it (yet), very fast interface, good integration with Plex/NAS. Love using my shield. literally the only issue I've had was the remote started playing up a little. Remove the batteries and re-pair the remote and its business as usual again.

  • +2

I've already got two. Do I really need a third?

    • +1

"This is the way" - one in every room ;)

      • What if there is no TV in that room?

  • +5

Has been a bit cheaper at $198 but this is an awesome price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/715382

  • +2

Jokes aside from old mate above, can the shield do anything a PS5 can’t? I love hoarding tech but I’ve got a fire stick and a chrome cast and I don’t really use either at all unless the PS5 is cooking it

    • It can do "okie google" thing. Personally, I find the remote is godsend.

    • Playing retro games?

  • Is this better than Apple TV? Similar price which one to get ?

    • Latest Apple TV would be infinitely more powerful. Though none of that matters if you prefer one ecosystem over the other.

I've been tempted to try it, but I haven't touched iPhone since 3GS…

      • I’ve never liked the ATV app UI’s. I remember Netflix’s horrible app on there back in the day

        • A part of me would love to try it, but I know I'll more than likely sell it. Can't justify switching ecosystems just for a media player.

Will always love the more open App Store on Android.

Grossly overkill chip for a media player too, priced well all things considered (Inc Apple). Probably only really beneficial if you play games on it too….

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Buy apple tv on amazon prime, if you don't like it you can return it under 30 days. Still get to keep the 3 months apple+

      • 2022 Apple TV 4K is 12.5% more powerful than the 2019 Shield Pro… according to a reviewer. I guess thats infinitely more powerful to some.

I have the old 2017 Nvidia Shield and it is far more stable/faster than my Chromecast (not the new 4k one).

        • Got a link or name to the reviewer?

    • +9

Apple TV vs Shield Pro is very similar to IOS vs Android, Apple TV is the best at what it can do but the Shield simply does more.

  • +2

Have wanted one for a long time. Finally succumbed. Good price.

  • +4

Great price but still cant see the point of upgrading my vodatv!

    • +3

This makes vodatv box look like a rock I've changed it's worth it .

    • Still rocking one here. Does what I need it to do.

      I'd consider if ATL

    • +2

Shockingly stable bit of kit the Vodafone TV

  • +5

Only thing that puts me off is having to purchase from that scumbag.

    • +4

      Pricematch at thebgoodguys

  • +2

It's good but buggy with updates, I'm still rocking android 9, it does what I want it to do.

    • Buggy in what regards? Haven't been keeping up to date with this as using CCWGTV

      • I think below the explain it better, I upgraded once, never again. I live with the small bugs of Android 9, the update wiped the external hard drive which was linked to the internal, so none of the apps would work. I spent hours setting it all up again. The reddit page is full of people with issues after updating, apparently now it's even got adds..

        • OK thanks. Yeah I heard about the ads and have read some more since posting last night. Think I will just stick to the CCWGTV. Cheers

  • Great price - hopefully the remote goes on sale too:

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/nvidia-shield-tv-remote-2020…

    • +2

The old remote 2017 was a real piece of sh@t. Chewed thru button cell battery like No Tomorrow.

      • +1

Indeed. They also used that shitty plastic/rubber that becomes sticky after a while.
