Shout out to deadpoet on educating me on dehumidifiers. He has a great writeup on what you should be looking for. Great summary here:

I suggest you don't get anything smaller than a 20L/day compressor dehumidifier, or a 10L/day dessicant dehumidifier. I personally love Ausclimate, but any other reputable brand should be fine as well — the bigger the machine, the better, and the more efficient it is. I own the Ausclimate 35L and 50L compressor models, as well as their 10L dessicant dehumidifier.

  • Good units, have an older one here, 10 years old, the control panal is going a bit flakey but otherwise seems OK.

The bigger ones are noisier, so if you have a small room to do (particularly if you want it on while sleeping or watching TV), a smaller one may be better. I have a 6-7 litre Ionmax desiccant in a room about 4x7m and it's fine.

The one in this post is a compressor type - better for warm use.

    • I was looking for one for my daughter's bedroom. If it's effective enough, can just leave it on for a few hours to get the humidity down before she sleeps.

      • +1

That's what I do. Most have sleep timers too.

I have the 50L Ausclimate, WDH-070EBP, and it works incredibly well.

But it is noisy so we don't run it while working from home. A small unit like this would probably be perfect. Highly recommended getting a dehumidifer if you need one. The amount of water these Ausclimate units pull out is amazing.

    • I have the Ausclimate 50L as well and can confirm it is amazing. However, I don't know why people keep saying a small unit is less noisy, they're all very similar, and they all use a big fan (many models let you choose from a low and high fan speed though, so if you want it to be slightly quieter you can use the lower fan speed, for slightly reduced performance).

I highly recommend people buy the biggest dehumidifer they can afford, because the small ones are very inefficient when it comes to drawing water out of the air. You waste a LOT more electricity to achieve the same result over a much longer time period, and the small compressor models (10L or thereabouts) really struggle to keep the humidity down.

For compressor dehumidifiers, I'd say the minimum people should go for is 20L/day rated extraction performance, but the higher the better if you want to get the best efficiency when it comes to electricity consumption.

For dessicant dehumidifiers, 10L/day rating is good.

  • Side topic, I have a Breville dehumidifier from a previous deal (https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/air-dehumidifier/bad…). Was hoping to use the dehumidifier during hot and humid days (QLD), but the air it blows out is very hot. Is this common across all compressor type dehumidifiers? I've seen another compressor type dehumidifier and it blows out much cooler air, but that unit is rated much smaller volume.

I know that compressor type dehumidifiers work by cooling the air to condense the moisture, and the heat must go somewhere. Just didn't expect it to be that hot.

    • At least you didn't get a dessicant dehumidifier, I read those things are like a heater! Perfect for cold and humid weather though.

Would it be silly to run the air-con on at the same time?

    • Was hoping to use the dehumidifier during hot and humid days (QLD), but the air it blows out is very hot

That's definitely not normal for compressor dehumidifiers — yes, they do heat up the room very slightly, but it's barely noticeable. Are you sure the hot air wasn't just ambient temperature, i.e. it was very hot indoors?

Or maybe the Breville has a special boost mode where it heats itself up in order to improve its dehumidification performance. I had a look but can't find anything definitive…

      • Are you sure the hot air wasn't just ambient temperature, i.e. it was very hot indoors?

Don't think so. I wanted to use it when it was humid and mildly hot. I knew the ambient temp would be acceptable if the humidity was lowered so I didn't want to run the air-con. After turning on the dehumidifier, the room ambient temp gradually increased until it became uncomfortable.

  • I got the 10L Desiccant model from the last ebay deal on here for n insane price $162 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747225) and can safely say that its more efficient then the 10L Breville dehumidifier that I have, because it can removes more moisture within the same amout of running time.

This 20L model seen to only be suitable for rooms up to 30m2 where as the 10L Desiccant mode is suitable for rooms up to 52m2. I need anothee dehumidifier for the bottom living room, so should i get this 20L model or the 10L one?

  • Would any of these dehumidifiers be good for a bedroom or small bathroom? Or should I just get the Kmart ones.

    • +1

I believe they would be fine. I'm going with what deadpoet recommend, buy the biggest you are willing to spend as it will be more efficient and can be used for bigger rooms (lounge room?) if needed.

Waiting for the 25L to go on special. Praying.

  • Dumb question: when I would a choose a dehumidifier over an air conditioner? I think I read some place that (some?) air conditioners have a setting to dehumidify without cooling but the power savings aren't that great.

    • I suspect when it's just humid and you need to reduce the humidity. In my case the daughter's room is humid even though I have the air-con on for her.

      • Are you sure you're not using an evaporative cooler? ;-) Seems some air conditioners are better than removing humidity than others.

Mine arrived (from the other deal). Excellent dehumidifier for the laundry, better than my old Delonghi model.

    • Is it loud? Could you have it running in the bedroom when sleeping?

      • I don't like noise in the bedroom at all : so I wouldn't keep it in my bedroom I keep mine in the laundry so less of An issue. You could perhaps keep it on during the day in your bedroom, while at work.

      • +1

I have uses it in my bedroom and found the noise to be fine and i can sleep with it on.

    • Wanted to ask how long was the delivery from AO.
