New Desktop with Noisy Fan Replacement

I recently got a computer through Enigma via this post:

It looks fantastic. Seems loud though. Don't know what to do about a fan noise that goes up and down. I think it's the cpu fan. Had a friend install a hard drive and a ssd, set it all up and said it's normal. However, I will be using this computer for university too. If I was going to get a cheapish (maybe no more than $50 I'm hoping) cpu fan for this so he can install it when he's next around, any suggestions which one? Links to Amazon will be great. Non-technical me!

or you could lower the fan speed at the expense of higher temp , using Gigabyte Smart Fan program or within bios setting.

what did the vendor say when you contacted them since its new?

    • COOLER: Intel Stock Cooler

      They whines at load.

  • start by adjusting the fan curve in software or bios.

  • Phunky is right, it's the stock cooler, so I'm after something quiet that does the job. The case is a mesh one so maybe it's louder, too, I guess. I know nothing about this stuff and there's a gazillion fans out there.

    • I'd recommend checking clearances first, however;

    • The coolers need a mounting bracket behind the motherboard. There's no guarantee you have an access hole in the case to install this without pulling out the whole motherboard. Check your case first.

  • check the motherboard for pin fan header types, and buy some branded fans that suit that header.

Replace the CPU cooler with a better heatsink

Adjust fan speed on a scale.

Gamers Nexus reviewed a bunch of cheap air coolers. Fast forward to 19 minutes if you want his final recommendations.

  • I have noticed in that task manager in Windows there's something called Geforce experience that was taking up 30-45% of the cpu. I killed it and it's a lot quieter for now. I don't know what it does but I can still do things.

    • GeForce experience can be uninstalled and it won't have any deleterious effects on your system, instead it will free up some resources since it always runs in the background when you login on Windows.

You can reinstall it easily and it's also installed by default everytime you install GeForce drivers (you need to opt out of it during install)

For most users it's considered bloatware, but it might be useful if you're a streamer and use it to record gameplay, or if you need an app that tells you that your drivers are out of date.

  • Honestly I couldn't find it to uninstall. The link you sent isn't what I've got on my computer. It's this one, a control panel.

The fan is still loud when I do other things. I was hoping this wasn't complicated haha. Next computer I buy I'll ask for a quiet fan hehe. I'm thinking I'll put the computer under the desk and partition it with a thick piece of wood to drown out sound.

    • Remember If you put the computer in an enclosed space it can restrict airflow or recycle warm air, so try not to block any of it's openings or boxing it in. It needs a bit of room to exhaust hot air out and to pull fresh (cold) air in.

It looks like you have a Windows store app. You can remove that using Display Driver Uninstaller, note that this will completely remove all Nvidia-related drivers. Then install the latest version directly from Nvidia (there was an update just a week ago, so you'll need to upgrade anyway).

  • I will do, thanks! As for the noise, I'll just have to put up with it I suppose. I have no idea what fan to get or installing it as I can't get someone to install it any more. I really appreciate the links you sent. Cheers!

  • OK great, so I looked at the task manager and it was sitting around 40%. I did the above, and he entire machine is 1-7% now without the Nvidia issue (Chrome is the most). At least I can study in peace haha.

Thanks for that Scrimshaw. It at least solves half the problem, which is appreciated.

  • I now have the same issue with GOG haha. I turn the computer on and one of the GOG programs sites on the task manager around 30%. Is so noisy when I play old games.

  • For anybody interested, who stumbles on this post, I had the following item install. It is incredibly quiet and keeps the cpu cooler than stock. I bought it for $52. They are currently out of stock so you'll have to find it elsewhere. It's so quiet - so good!

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ARGB CPU Air Cooler, 6 Heat Pipes CPU Cooler, Dual 120mm TL-C12C-S PWM Fan, Aluminium Heatsink Cover, AGHP Technology, for AMD AM4 AM5/Intel 1150/1151/1200/1700
