Has anyone experienced claiming through AMEX's included insurance? Like, for an injury/stolen luggage etc. Curious how it compares to paid travel insurance.
I claimed once a number years ago. It was a seamless claim though it took a while for the claim to be finalised. Only one call and a follow up email to send the relevant document.
I claimed once for Xmas trip. The claim got rejected nicely due to the existing condition despite having it for more than 12 months with no issues. Overall good experience but their definition of the existing condition is unclear.
definition of the existing condition is unclear.
It's very clear - my Amex document says an existing condition is anything you've had for more than 3 months before the trip.
You got it 12 months ago ? Existing condition.
@Nom: are you referring to "3 months - THE PHYSICAL DEFECT, MEDICAL OR DENTAL CONDITION, ILLNESS, INJURY OR DISEASE led to the manifestation of symptoms where a reasonable person in the circumstances would be expected to be aware of or a reasonable person under the circumstances would have foreseen."?
Think 3 months here mean if you have any pre-existing medical condition for more than 3 months you will get covered. If you get it within 3 months, you won't get it covered.
@tc423: Yeah, my document has four categories of Existing Condition "IN THE TIME PERIOD PRIOR TO MAKING
YOUR QUALIFYING TRAVEL PURCHASE".
Existing Conditions are Cancer in the past 5 years, Some specific things in the past 3 years, Some other specific things in the past 2 years, and everything else in the past 3 Months :
3 Months THE PHYSICAL DEFECT, MEDICAL OR DENTAL CONDITION, ILLNESS, INJURY OR DISEASE led to the
manifestation of symptoms where a reasonable person in the circumstances would be expected to be aware
of or a reasonable person under the circumstances would have foreseen.
So if you got something 12 months ago, no coverage - it's an Existing Condition is how I read it 🤷♂️
But you could be correct, maybe it means they won't cover things in those time periods ? But that doesn't really make sense - if you got something 5 months ago it's a lot more "pre existing" than something you got 2 months ago ??
@Nom: I would think this is more similar to the "waiting period" for private health fund?
If you go for travel with a pre-existing condition and it went worse and required medical treatment, It would make more sense to me to cover those who got the condition years ago rather than recently? Because they want to filter out those who want to abuse the travel insurance for medical treatment overseas?
However, it is extremely confusing and could be either case. I've sent another email to Chubb hoping they can clarify this.
@Nom: Amex called today and confirm that if you have had no medical treatment within 2 years before your travel. You will be eligible for the policy.
We have restarted our claim.
Yeh, amex australia use chubb, which has the most shithouse customer experience ever.
I had encountered a bug with a claim, emailed amex, emailed chubb, one month later it was still not fixed. They sent me a paper PDF to download, print and fill out. In (profanity) 2022.
Absolutely awful choice of insurance partner.
I claimed once for a cancelled flight by airlines.
After asking me to submit the breakdown and supporting evidence, they just replied with a single line: "Flight cancellation not covered".
The insurance is provided by Chubb, a reputable one but wasn't great in my case.
If you’ve got a Platinum Charge card, and booking Business or higher, always worth a check via the Amex travel platform also
Saved $3.5k on a return fare from MEL-SIN-FRA-JFK in 2019.
I'm trying to figure out what the route was: Melbourne to Singapore to France to New York and then the same way back?
Out of curiosity, was the ultimate destination New York, and you went via SIN/FRA just to make it cheaper or was it a case of a multi-city flight, whereby, you spent a few days checking out each country?
First timer with AMEX and will be looking at AMEX travel platform tonight - hence my Q above (I don't mind multi city flights if it makes it cheaper).
FRA is Frankfurt. sometimes you can have good travel deals like that. you trade off the inconvenience of extra travel time for a cheaper ticket.
@TexasVujicic: I always find bargains flying through Frankfurt, must be a tax thing or subsidy from local govt. Lovely place for a day or two.
@tightm8: pretty much, their landing and fuel fees are much cheaper than LHR for example.
i make a good effort to try travel to "quieter" international points, such as Vienna and Frankfurt and make that part of my trip.
I flew to New York in April of 2019. With the Amex Centurion, you can get some really good deals. But when I was Platinum, especially for Singapore airlines for flights originating out of Australia - you can find some really good deals.
Melbourne - Singapore (Stop) Singapore - Frankfurt - New York JFK (F MEL-SIN, J SIN-FRA-JFK)
Newark - Singapore - Melbourne (J EWR-SIN, J SIN-MEL)
All of that return in F/J was comparatively $3.8k cheaper than booking through Singapore Airlines directly.
Just to compare price?
wish this had come out sooner, booked Eithad 2 weeks ago for travel end of April.
Can't seem to find the option for Japan as the destination.
Etihad doesn't service Japan anymore.
Ah. Thank you for the info!
only in Summer.
It wouldn't show up from Australia as this is quite a significant back-tracking.
Not just that, its how the times are with flights.
Flights come in from Asia and Oceanic and continue to Europe and North America.
It would be a minimum of 12 hours of a connection time, upwards of 24 in most cases.
@AircraftFreight: Absolutely !
Sure.. What is your email address?
wonder for how long is that deal running?
Careful with this if you are booking with foreign currency (eg. booking from a foreign country to AU). I used a similar code back in Jan and it seems the discount was only applied to the base fare (excluding tax etc.). Also AMEX charges 3% intl transaction fee on top. So the net discount for me was around 5%, still saving otherwise of course!
100% only fly with Ethand and emirates they are by are the only airlines any one should fly with.
Qantas has left this conversation
No Qatar?
yep forgot about Qatar those guys as well :D
You flown Qatar recently? I use them a lot and they are trash compared to Cathay and JAL. Not sure about Etihad/Emirates though.
my son wasn't happy with Etihad when he flew about 5 years ago to Madrid. He thought Qatar and Emirates were the best out of the 3 by a mile. Not sure what it is like now.
yep Etihad isn't the best of the bunch but they are certainly better than Qantus, American airlines, and the rest.
LOL…
Singapore Airlines is #1 by the length of the Changi Airport runway!
Etihad is doghsit to Europe and back.
I've never had an AmEx card.
Do you think it's worth getting one just for the first year?
"The American Express® Platinum Edge Credit Card
Annual Fee: $0 Annual Card Fee in the first year, saving you $195"
https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/all-cards/?i…
There is no straight answer to your question as it all depends on your circumstances. This is no doubt this is one of the best earning point cards especially if you spend a lot in supermarkets and servos, however if you have been collecting Qantas Points for example, then there are better cards out there that align with your goal.
I'd say read a comprehensive guide first such as Point Hacks and then decide for yourself.
Thanks so much for your advice. I'll check out the link :)
Open card fee free, book flights at discount, cancel card in the 11th month.
Done
Reminds me when Woolies opened Masters.
Only AMEX customers got a discount.
It did not end up well…..
Flew with Etihad last year long-haul, first time using them in about 8 years. Overall experience was good - nice aircraft, seats, food and service. Abu Dhabi Airport is pretty average though, and I had a couple of longish layovers. I'd put them #3 amongst the ME airlines, and all of those below Singapore Airlines. But would definitely use them again if the deal is enticing.
Also, worth to check and comparing with Qatar Airways price to save up to $500 with code: VELOCITY23
FYI, this code doesn't work on multi city bookings. Only valid for one-way and return.
I'm super butthurt on Etihad.
First time I flew them more than 10 years ago was very good. I was pleasantly suprised by the service at cattle class and legroom on planes .
It has been getting progressively worse to a point that now I strongly suggest everyone not to use them if practicable.
On my last flight from EU my seat was broken, so couldn't recline on a 12+ hour flight.
Flight was apparently fully booked so they wouldn't change my seat.
When changing planes at Abu Dhabi they lost my passport for couple of hours (looked like it was a shift change and someone just walked away with my passport on the table, and the next guy only started asking about that random passport on his table hours later) making me miss my flight, and having to buy a new ticket for 2k for the next day out of pocket. They didn't take any responsibility.
Staff at Abu Dhabi was very unhelpful and straight up lied to me ( went to another counter with the same question and got a positive answer)
Obviously my luggage got lost. I was quoted 3 days for recovering my luggage and delivery to my house. Insted I was given a runaround for more than a week and finally told that it was on its way BACK to Abu Dhabi !!!? In the end had to pick it up myself. Tbh glad I got it back at all.
Their website is a horrible for submitting claims.
Reporting a missing luggage REQUIRES attachment of photos of the luggage that was lost !?(make sure you take a photo of your luggagebeforethe trip!). Among other idiotic fields and contradictions.
Etihad used to be a great airline. My last time flying with them was from AUH-MEL on the aged A340-500 (this dam ancient plane was used by EY until 2017)
Really crap service, delayed, unprofessional the whole Jetstar works :-)
Moved over to EK - much better since.
When was the last time you flew with them?
Did you get insurance for such unforseen circumstances?
That sounds horrendous, when did this happen?
It works only on online Etihad destinations (no codeshares) - so only from SYD / MEL.
https://www.etihad.com/en/book/special-offers/promotion/amer… - same here.
Terrible airline!
Check-in currently down. Couldn't book a special meal and had to go hungry to London. Also couldn't change seats.
Singapore Airlines is the best I have been on by far.
Anyone have a list of destinations and dates that this applies to?
This is brilliant - and booking with AMEX means not having to purchase separate travel insurance.
