I'd be very careful with Dram-less drives.

Why it seems even Samsung makes dramless now

    • My understanding is that DRAM-less drives are okay for a games library for example but as an OS drive, they're not worth it. Is that correct?

      • +6

I’m reality they’re OK with OS drive as well, unless you have heavy writing operations like cache drive for zfs. Especially for those who are upgrading from SATA HDD or SSD, as dram-less speed outside of SLC cache for TLC drives are still considerably fast.

DRAMless QLCs can be quite slow outside of SLC cache, but their large total capacity usually bridge the gap. Some of them got hundreds of GB of SLC cache that you’re unlikely to use it up except in artificial tests.

        • Thanks mate for the info!

@Fx180: Depends on your usage and your expectation. In general usage, "decent" DRAMless SSDs are fine because the SSD isn't actually busy 100% of the time. However, if you have the following usage patterns, then it could be an issue:

            • The SSD is constantly doing both reads and writes for a long period of time.
            • Writing of lots of small files (so the use of HMB isn't quite going to cut it).
            • Repeated heavy writes.
            • Database server.

That said, still beats HDD. SLC cache, however, is not necessary a good measurement to show DRAMless SSDs being weak. The main reason is that while SN570 1TB doesn't have a big dynamic cache, the 2TB version does (and it is actually quite large). Due to that, for an empty SSD, the 2TB SN570 can write at 3000MB/s for 900GB, and that's something even WD Black SN750 can match. Obviously, once the SLC cache runs out, SN570 will take longer to recover.

Yeah the WD black SN770 is DRAM-less too, but that doesn't matter, since it's faster than competitors with DRAM at the same price point.

The whole reason we say "avoid one without DRAM" is because DRAM helps performance. But if it's faster regardless, fine.

(It's also only $30 more than this, so a nice upgrade if you want that near-top-of-the-line-but-not-crazy-pricey sweet spot).

  • How low is the real world temp? My nvme runs hot

  • Effective price $69

Does that mean we apply the $20 voucher to this $89 purchase and we pay $69 or do we pay $89 and get the disk and $20 to spend again?

I can see the OP tried to make it clear, but it isn't.

    • +1

      My guess is the latter.

      • Correct.

So basically its only $69 if there's something else that you want to buy from somewhere that accepts that gift card before it expires. What's not clear is what gift card is supplied, and where it is usable at.

        • From the Ts & Cs:
"The e-gift card awarded will be a MasterCard Electronic Gift Card from https://corporateprepaidgiftcards.com.au/. The e-gift card value will be determined depending on the product purchased as outlined below."

  • +1

    what gift card is it?

gift card to spend on WD only? or what

    • +4

The e-gift card awarded will be a MasterCard Electronic Gift Card from https://corporateprepaidgiftcards.com.au

      From terms and conditions

      • thanks mate

      • Did you receive your gift card? I claimed long time before but no response from WD. Only 1 confirmation email.

        • Still haven’t receive a thing

        • Also waiting on it :(

I’d spend a bit more and take the black, but I suppose it’s cheap cheap…
