I Applied a CBA Low Fee Gold Credit Card, but Got Approved with a Normal Low Fee Card Silently

Hi guys, just sharing my unhappy experience with Commonwealth Bank credit card application.

I applied the low fee gold card with bonus cash $300, but they sent me a low fee card with bonus cash $200, silently, I realize until I received the bonus cash. Called the staff, they said because they can only give me credit limit of $2000, and it is in their terms and condition they can swap the card to a Low Fee card, without informing me anything. In this case, I have never realized until after using the card for 1 month. I do not think it is a fair action.

Since I applied for the gold which means I do not want something else. And BTW, I got way more credit limit left, when I applied the card, I only have a Citi Card of $10000, I usually have 3-4 credit card with more limit, so really not sure how they decide they cannot give me $4000 limit of Gold Card instead of $2000 limit of Low Fee card.

About the best I could make of it quickly.

Hi guys, just sharing my unhappy experience with a Commonwealth Bank Credit Card application. I applied for the Low Fee Gold Card, with a cash bonus of 300, but they sent me a Low Fee card, with a cash bonus of 200, without notifying me.

I didn’t realize until I received the bonus cash.

I called the staff, and they said because they could only give me a credit limit of $2000, and that it is in their terms and conditions that they can swap the card to a Low Fee Card, without informing me.

I didn’t realize that they had done this until after using the card for 1 month.

I do not think it is fair. I applied for the Gold Card and do not want something else.
I have, by my calculations, more credit available.

When I applied the card, I only had a Citi card, with $10000 limit. I usually have 3-4 credit cards, with greater credit limits. So, I’m really not sure how they decide they cannot give me a $4000 limit on a Gold Card, but instead approve a $2000 limit Low Fee Card.

        That makes more sense. Cheers

So you didn't read your e-mails/messages, or the PDS/disclosure forms?

Didn't see on the app that it's not the Low Fee gold nor when you received the physical card itself?

    • That is part of the story that makes me upset, they did not mention any low fee/ low fee gold wordings in any of their emails, pdfs or online bankings, I only figure out when I saw the cashback is 200 and found out my card is in silver color not gold color(which the gold card has)

Pretty sure when I applied with cba 2 years ago they had this as a option that you could opt in and or out during the application.

    • i did not see any question related to that in the applications, the staff claimed it is in terms n conditions

    ChatGPT to the rescue!

    Hello everyone,

I would like to share my recent experience with Commonwealth bank's credit card application process. I applied for the low fee gold card with a bonus of $300 cash, but unfortunately, I received a low fee card with a bonus of only $200 cash. I was not informed about this change and only realized it after receiving the bonus cash.

Upon contacting the bank's staff, I was informed that they could only provide me with a credit limit of $2000, which is why they had to swap my card to a low fee card. They also mentioned that this is a part of their terms and conditions, and they are allowed to make such changes without informing the customer. I feel that this is not a fair practice as I had applied for the gold card and did not want any other option.

Moreover, I had more credit limit available, and at the time of applying for the card, I only had a Citibank card with a limit of $10,000. I usually have 3-4 credit cards with a higher limit, so I am not sure why Commonwealth bank couldn't provide me with a limit of $4000 for the gold card instead of $2000 for the low fee card.

Overall, I am disappointed with the experience and hope that the bank can take appropriate measures to ensure transparency and fairness in their credit card application process.

    Thank you for reading.

I usually have 3-4 credit card

This might have something to do with it, surprised your application wasn’t rejected when you have that many cards already.

I Applied a CBA Low Fee Gold Credit Card, but Got Approved with a Normal Low Fee Card Silently

    Sounds dodgy?

I applied the low fee gold card with bonus cash $300, but they sent me a low fee card with bonus cash $200, silently, I realize until I received the bonus cash.

A bit strange, but go on …

Called the staff, they said because they can only give me credit limit of $2000, and it is in their terms and condition they can swap the card to a Low Fee card, without informing me anything.

So they did something that was in their terms and conditions? So what's the problem?

In this case, I have never realized until after using the card for 1 month. I do not think it is a fair action.

    Why's that?

Since I applied for the gold which means I do not want something else.

Well, no, that's not how it works. You applied for a credit card, hoping for the gold, but agreeing via the terms and conditions to be simultaneously assessed for a lower tier card and provided with that if that's the way the credit assessment comes out.

And BTW, I got way more credit limit left, when I applied the card, I only have a Citi Card of $10000, I usually have 3-4 credit card with more limit, so really not sure how they decide they cannot give me $4000 limit of Gold Card instead of $2000 limit of Low Fee card.

Well, that's a totally separate issue. Given economic conditions currently, it wouldn't surprise me at all if credit decisions are getting tighter. And just quietly, it's people that have multiple credit cards that give rise to all this "responsible lending" legislation that just creates nightmares for anyone who wants to do anything other than a plain vanilla loan.

  • When they sent you the “congrats your card was approved” email, what did it say? Did it say “Low Fee Gold” or “Low Fee”?

    • there is nothing mentioned about the card type/name. Correct me if you have received any meail from CBA with a clear "welcome email"

Very odd that it doesn’t clearly state what product you have received.

But if you knew they were unclear in advance of your application, why would you choose to bank with someone that you don’t think provides its customers clear correspondence?

        • I do not, it is my first time apply this card

  • Same experience. I applied for Gold one but got approved for the other one. My mistake was putting the credit limit below the min threshold by mistake. (The application form allowed me to do so without any warnings). Anyway, i noticed once it was approved. Contacted them straight away before the card was even sent out. They wouldnt budge to change the card for me even though i am totally happy with increasing the limit. I was mad but i decided that the 200 cash back is still good enough for free money.

    • Oh great point mate…I think I got the problem, I kind of remember in some screen they ask for the credit limit, I put 2000, since the cashback only need spent 1500, so that is maybe why they give me a low fee card, damn….but they should not allow me to put 2000 as limit as the gold card has min 4000 limit requirement, and I am applying for a gold card

Had the same issue. They said that it was in terms and conditions which we accepted so we raised the complaint and there was no resolution. So cancelled it.

    • yes, seems not a single isolated case, maybe you accidentally put credit limit <4000 too

      • Nah I made sure it was 6k

  • I have tried applying for this card and also just applied for myself, both times got rejected instantly. In the mean time have refinanced my loan 3 times in 12month, surely if I can get a loan then I should be able to get a new cc?
