Daikin Air Purifier MC40 / MC40YPVM $269 Delivered ($255.55 with eBay Plus or Targeted Code) & More @ Daikin eBay

2510
PLUSMAR1SNSMD3...

Very impressed with mine (MC40).

FYI: if you crack a fart, it will ramp up the fan.. but you can adjust the sensitivity if you eat a lot of beans.

You can dim the LEDs on it, or have them turn off when idle (except the power LED).

The HEPA filter is cleanable, and expected to last 10 years in the average environment.
Replacement filters can be purchased via aliexpress etc, or via daikin resellers for genuine.

It's quiet and doesn't use much power.

My older daikin purifier has been going strong 10+ years without a hiccup..
still on the original filters.. imo, they are designed/engineered really well..

I had a look but can't determine the normal sale price.
But seems like a better deal IMO compared to others I've seen lately on ozb.

Before Impulse Buying

Read the comments below for alternative views. These may induce amounts of ozone* into the air. This doesn't concern me. I don't think the MC40 acts like ionizers of olden days (trying to engage the entire room) but rather, it works to embiggen particles to allow the filters to work/be cleaned more efficiently. Still.. If you have a zero ozone policy.. you may want to look for something else.. @Bargainshooter has given some alternatives below

update

Daikin responded to user Eightimmortals stating (re MC40) "the percentage of ozone in the room will not exceed 0.000005%.This sit[s] well below the standard." refer: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13466116/redir

The MC40 has streamer tech.. but not the 'active plasma ion tech' that the larger models have.
If you are concerned, contact Daikin about your specific model.

  • Anyone know if MC40 resumes operation after power is turned off at the mains?

Wondering if I can use it on a smart plug

    • +2

User guide to me reads like you will need to press the ON button after powering on from the wall:

“When the unit is unplugged or turned OFF, it will operate with the settings last used the next time it is turned ON.”

      Page 9 - https://www.daikin.com.au/sites/default/files/daikin-air-pur…

      • Thanks for making the effort to do what I should've :)

Oh well. I guess I can afford to lift my lazy arse up and control it manually.

I've taken the ozone risk and bought one. Thanks OP

  • The Air purifiers only seem to come with a 12 month warranty :(
    Otherwise would have bought one.
Only the air conditioning units come with a 5 year warranty.

    • These air purifiers might run 24x7. Air conditioners… not so much

    • +1

I generally ignore '12 month warranty' statements for appliances.. I could be wrong but I think the 2019 Australian Consumer Law basically states that things have to last a reasonable length of time. Because it comes with a '10 year filter', I would argue for a refund up to 10 years.. certainly 5.

      just my guess.

  • +1

We don’t have any allergy as such at home, just wondering if it’s still worth getting it? How effective it is for cooking odour, I would love to remove the odour after extensive cooking days if it removes it completely. Anyone here has an experience they’d like to share please :)

  • +5

Was close to pulling the trigger but researching the ozone thing made me stop.

Good deal for those wanting to take the risk.

    • +4

Same here! The ozone risk is concerning

    • -5

Yes — these things are something of a death trap in an enclosed room. A country like Australia has cleaner air than most, and the best thing you can do for your health, when inside, is open a window. Air “purifiers” cause more problems than they solve

      • +5

Don't know but mine allows better sleep, fart protection, and blocks majority of dust particles………. Older house.

        • +1

At best, only the smelly components of your emissions. Probably most of the perceived benefit is in your imagination. Smelly stuff naturally diffuses. Air purifiers can’t protect you from bathing in the accumulating odourless discharge from human metabolism. Only fresh air from outside can nourish your soul

      • +6

Death trap is a slightly bombastic exaggeration 😂
Ozone ionizers indoors can be a problem but that doesn't mean purifiers aren't needed. If you actually measure air quality you will be astounded at how bad it is in some areas. PM0.3 to PM2.5 particulates from home wood heaters, bush fires (with winds carrying pollutants 50km+), every single diesel engine and petrol stations can make the air outside just as bad if not worse than inside air. And if you use fuel for cooking or heating you're adding pollution into your home, which should be replaced with cleaned air from somewhere.

Pure HEPA filters only remove pollutants, they don't add anything into your air.

        • Pure HEPA filters only remove pollutants, they don't add anything into your air.

The problem is ventilation. Shut the windows, turn on the purifier, and your closed system is slowly killing you from increased ozone and CO2. Fortunately, shutting the windows merely reduces gas exchange, and you’ll probably survive in the short to medium term

      • +4

Yes — these things are something of a death trap in an enclosed room

are you confusing these for coal heaters?

        • I’m thinking more long-term, like cancer in 20 years

      • +2

        @tharlow
I respectfully disagree.. unless you have zero allergies, and are living away from roads.. and in an area where no one lights fires/fireplaces.. perhaps near the sea. We can't all live in such places.

    • Sorry, what s the ozone risk? Thanks

      • The hole is getting bigger

        • +6

3 kids will do that. Oh..that one

        • Oh, is that what every AC will cause? Not downplaying the ozone risk but initially I rhot the purifier will have adverse effects on users. Thanks.

          • +7

@Bargain-er: Huh? This device uses ionizers as their method of destroying airborne pathogens. The ionizers generate ozone. Most air conditioners do not have ionizers, nor do they generate ozone. Ozone in our breathing space (troposphere) causes damage to the respiratory tract. It's not good for us. The ozone layer in the stratosphere, above the troposphere, protects us from UVC radiation. Completely different issues.

  • +1

Does it remove the smell of bushfire smoke from the room ?

    • -4

Yes — and it gets even better. With one of these babies in turbo mode, one can be blissfully unaware that the house is burning down around you. That said, it’s always best practice to install the smoke detector in the same room as the air purifier

  • +2

    Got MC40, thanks.

  • Got one, Thanks OP!

  • +1

Does this fart clearer have Smart Home tech? google home/alexa etc.

    • +1

It didn't mention WiFi. If it's got no WiFi card, its got no potential smart home function.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, got one $249.

A quick price search shows they are usually around the $400-$500 mark.

  • +2

Decided to cancel the order after reading about the ozone concerns. Too late though, so sent a message to the seller to request the order to be cancelled. Let's see how it goes.

    • +1

shouldn't be a problem I'd say.. they dispatch rather quickly but should be delayed somewhat from the ozb surge.

if you explained your concerns to them.. I/we would be interested in their response.

(edit: when I posted the deal the mc40 stated '6 sold in the last 24 hours.. now it says 454 sold.. lol)

    • +1

I did the same but I just mentioned size too big for our place, got a cancellation notice in abit 2 mins later. I think the more reading you do it can become a concern but generally for most people in the right settings it would probably be safe to use. But knowing our usage of mostly closed windows in a long stretch of winter with a baby in the area just can't take the risk. Sucks because these would have been perfect.

    • +4

I updated my description to encourage ozb's to read the comments/@bargainshooter 's alternative views/tech/products before purchasing..

    • Same reason I didn't order this air purifier….. Ozone release is a real concern being that it will be used next to my bed….. last thing I need is a respiratory issues due to the purifier.

  • Has the price gone back up to $269 (and $255 with eBay plus)? I can’t see the $20 voucher anywhere either? Thanks

    • hmm.. yeah seems to have gone up to AU $255.55.. I'll update. I don't know about the voucher

      • Thanks….and bummer

    • I could be wrong but I think the $20 voucher was only available if you had bought something in the past worth $150 or more to get that voucher.

  • Alright gents, help me to decide from the following please.

    1. INOVA-E8 Air Purifier
    2. WINIX ZERO+ PRO 5-stage air purifier
    3. Daikin Air Purifier MCK55/MC55
    4. Samsung Ultimate Air Purifier AX90
  • +2

no idea why i just bought 2 of these

    • +4

Self-harm takes many forms. You are human, and deserving of love. Reconcile with your inner demons, and make peace with this imperfect world

  • Can someone share where to buy the hepa filter (original rather than from Aliexpress)? I would like to buy one to keep as spare, not sure of these replacement filters will be around in 10 years time! Or at least become more expansive!

    • +1

If you contact daikin, they will refer you to their dealers.
      To find a dealer: https://www.daikin.com.au/find-dealer

(p.s yeah prob. a good idea.. although they still provide filters/parts for my 2009 model.. you never know, and inflation is a b*)

(p.p.s yeah i wish daikin sold them on their ebay store, but I assume they have an agreement with the dealers to not compete/sell parts.. just the product)

    • Replacement filters are available for purchase directly from Daikin directly from their Spare Parts department.

  • Someone explain to me how this is as good as a coway airmega 300/400. I refuse to use anything other than the coway

    • +9

I refuse to use anything other than the coway

Then why bother asking for comparisons?

      • +1

You obviously don’t understand rhetorical questions. Here’s an example — Someone explain to me why I’m wrong when I’m obviously right. You’re not supposed to answer that, by the way, because I refuse to read any replies on the grounds that I might have an existential crisis

        • +6

Why not just have your existential crisis and be done with it?

  • Does this suck away pet odours ? meaning safe around pets ?

    • -7

It will poison them, slowly but surely, with ozone, but apart from that it’s great! It’s so quiet that the cat can sleep on top even as it’s cutting in and out

      • +2

What is this ozone everyone talks about? I've been using a Philips air purifier, does that have ozone? Kinda confused with all this discussion when its never been in other threads before.

        • +5

Ozone kills anything… as such it's particularly useful for killing odors, viruses, bacteria…

…ie, I have a heavy-duty ozone generator and after running it in a car for a few 10 minute blocks of time it completely got rid of the smell of smoke from a really heavy smoker.

In hotels, ozone may be used between guests as it will kill odors and make the room smell fresh…

You know that freshness you feel after a heavy thunderstorm, that's because of ozone produced…

In any case, ozone has a really short life, literally minutes, but it's dangerous to you, your pets, your plants if your at home while the ozone is being generated.

And in the case of air purifiers, there's ones that work in combination with ozone generators vs the ones that use filters alone. However, I wouldn't think any of the ozone purifiers for home use generate that high of a concentration of ozone and you'd know it if they did because you would certainly smell the ozone, and you would have coughing and a serious tingling sensation in your lungs.

          • +1

@Heaps for Cheaps: I'm just reading through this thread properly now. So Ozone is only an issue on air purifier models without proper HEPA filter?

            • +1

@Fuzor: Well, ozone has its place in cleaning, but a HEPA system has enough filter stages to be able to clean the air without the need of ozone.

              • +1

@Heaps for Cheaps: Great thanks for the info! I was worried before with my Philips air purifier as I use it next to me when sleeping.

          • +1

@Heaps for Cheaps: I ordered one of these (MC40) but also new to purifiers/this ozone talk. My partner has asthma - do you think I should cancel my order and look elsewhere?

            Appreciate the info.

        • +7

What is this ozone everyone talks about? I

I think its overly exaggerated in this post..

  • OOS

  • Has anyone used Kmart purifier and can comment on quality please? Is that a good buy? HEPA filter, not super expensive and can be sourced locally.

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/large-family-air-purifier-4…

  • I bought this purifier. I hope the good things about it are true and the bad things are untrue…

  • +1

Are we talking about the Active plasma ion technology when we talk about creating ozone?
If so MC40 doesnt have that

    • +1

thats what someone said as well and if thats the case how does MC40 and MC30 work?
anyways cant find maybe someone else has

    • +2

Concern seems to be over the ion “streaming” / “streamer” function that you can’t turn off

      • +1

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13482116/redir
apparently there is a way to disable it.. doesn't concern me so I haven't tried.

        • +2

Thanks I find it does sometimes come on

It kills bacteria on the filter

Why would I turn it off? Then I’d face musty dirty filters like the Xiaomi without it

You’re faced with a minuscule amount of ozone that escapes from the internal cleaning process or increased mould and bacteria in the air using a dirty filter

  • +1

Thank you OP. I bought one happily. I have a Xiaomi 3H and will be in interested to compare them. The Xiaomi has been excellent at low speed in my bedroom set to 8 hrs a night. Maybe this will be better…

    • I have two xiaomi 3H, they have both started pumping out a sickly sweet minty smell at the start of this summer. I cleaned one out and replaced the filter, was good for a little while but now ~2 months later it’s minty again :-/

Anyone else have this issue?I don’t run them regularly, maybe that’s the reason. But then I’ve had a Sharp air purifier for ~10 years and that doesn’t produce any smell, with similar regularity of use…

  • +5

So I sent Daikin a question about ozone levels in regards to the MC40.

    "Thank you for your enquiry.
the percentage of ozone in the room will not exceed 0.000005%.
This sit well below the standard."

    • +2

This is what I found on internet about O3 -

      • Ozone is a harmful gas to humans even in small amounts. Typical ozone levels in the
environment are at concentrations less than 50 parts per billion or 0.000005% of the molecules
in the air. Unhealthy ozone levels begin above 165 ppb concentration for an exposure time of
        one hour.

So at the level, Daikin is claiming - it might be ok? Did they give you any more information?

      • +2

        Like what?
We have a couple of ozone producing devices here for years and have not noticed any issues (I wouldn't stick my head in front of them mind you). I'm not concerned in the slightest about the amount being emitted by this unit. If anyone does have concerns then they shouldn't buy it. Also, if it was a concern you'd think the sale of these products would stop dead it their tracks?

        • Like how long it takes to generate that level of O3, but in any case, I am not concerned as well. I didn't buy it to run 24x7 and will be using most in the living area which is well ventilated.

      • +2

use your food processor for one minute and your kitchen will have 100 times that level of ozone

    • thanks.. I updated the description with daikin's response.

  • Has anyone had their item shipped yet? Looking at eBay feedback, the seller usually dispatches really quickly but I am wondering whether they oversold (hope not).

    • +2

I have got it in this morning.

    • yeh I almost feel I should have warned daikin I was going to post the deal.. or waited til business hours.
      hope you get yours.

    • Received tracking today

  • Has anyone tried talking to Daikin on the amount of Ozone generated by these purifiers and if they meet the CARB limits. I tried reaching Daikin and their support was absymal. California Air Resources Board prohibits using Ozone generating air purifiers, Daikin's EU site advises not to use Ozone based air purifiers. This is in public interest - I see 700 units sold on ebay site, I am thinking of returning mine since there is 30 days free returns on ebay. Cheers

    https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/air-cleaners-ozone-…

    • +2

refer to the updated description / comments above

(p.s. ozone generator is different to 'thing that makes ozone as a byproduct' which is many things.. not just purifiers)

  • Merged from Daikin Air Purifiers - Harmful Ozone Generation

This is in relation to the massivelly popular Daikin Air Purifier Deal on ebay posted here 2 days ago?

Has anyone tried talking to Daikin on the amount of Ozone generated by these purifiers and if they meet the CARB limits. This model is not on the approved CARB models list

I tried reaching Daikin and their support was absymal and they kept transferring me from one dept to another as they were not sure how to answer

This is in public interest - I see 700 units sold on ebay site, I am thinking of returning mine since there is 30 days free returns on ebay, but will appreciate the forums views.

Daikin's own web-site advises not to use Ozone based air purifiers. (https://www.daikin-ce.com/en_us/daikin-blog/common-air-purif…)
"So the question remains, can air purifiers be harmful to health? Well this may depend on the type of air purifier. Some air purifiers use ozone to purify the air. This can be an effective method, but it comes with a downside. While there are safe levels of ozone, it can still cause issues for some people such as throat irritation, coughs and breathing problems. This will of course be heightened in those with asthma and respiratory disease, so it is best to avoid these types of air purifying systems"

California Air Resources Board has a section on Hazardous Ozone-Generating Air Purifiers (https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/air-cleaners-ozone-…)
"Why are ozone generators still on the market? The unfortunate answer is that misleading advertising by manufacturers is very effective, and no government agency has the authority to fully regulate these devices. Thus, CARB is actively working to educate professionals and the public about the dangers of using ozone generators. What does CARB recommend? CARB strongly advises against the use of ozone generators in spaces occupied by people or animals. Other governmental agencies agree with this advice"

    • +1

"Has anyone tried talking to Daikin on the amount of Ozone generated by these purifiers and if they meet the CARB limits. This model is not on the approved CARB models list"

Yes I sent them an email yesterday, here is their reply.

      "Thank you for your enquiry.
the percentage of ozone in the room will not exceed 0.000005%.
This sit well below the standard.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to reach out.

      Kind Regards
      Daikin "

I'm not worried in the least. :)

They've been selling air purifier with the feature which is streamer since 2004 in Japan. Also, I have tried to smell closer the air purifier when streamer worked but I couldn't smell Ozon.

More stocks come back. I just bought one. Thanks

    • -1

They probably put the cancelled purchases from the Ozone propagandists back for resale

Such people believe that PM2.5 filters can't filter PM10 kind of like flat earthers

  • -2

Somebody care to explain why do we need this in Australia. Understand if you need this for a polluted place like Delhi, India.

    • -7

Welcome to the Darwin Awards — today, stupid, rich people are killing themselves slowly from the ozone emissions of air purifiers when they could just open a window… LOL
