Why is the disc edition so popular over digital? Does it allow for using second hand games easily or something? Sorry for the noob questions.

Basically I have a gaming PC and never felt the need to add a disc drive for it. Hence the above question.

*Watch movies in 4K quality, over compressed streaming services
*Physical games bought at retail (often day 1 on disc priced $70-$90) and tend to be cheaper than buying from PlayStation Digital shopfront $98-$124
*Trade in value after played - through via EB or JB Hi Fi Or If you decide to wait a few months you can purchase a trade in copy in many cases much cheaper than the still inflated digital pricing on the PS Storefront.
*Loan to a friend. Or they could purchase from you at a better price than your trade value / cheaper for the friend buying a preowned from EB/JB.

Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos (but without Dolby Vision and HDR10+). So not the best Blu-ray player you can get by any stretch.

Thanks for the detailed response. Appreciate it :)

        Still a question tho - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13433259/redir

Its more popular because you can buy physical media which is generally cheaper. New games at launch at usually around 79 on Disk but for digital its around 110/120.
The other benefit is having the option to sell the games once you're done or purchase 2nd hand games so although the disk console is $150 more you easily save a lot more money in the long run.

        Thanks!

Basically yeah, consoles still have physical copies of games so you shop around for the best price instead of being locked into whatever Sony decides to charge on the PlayStation store. You can buy and sell used copies of PS5 games and also PS4 games too.
It also serves as an optical media playback device so Blu-rays and DVDs

For PCs, it's been a long time since a disc drive is necessary. Nowadays even physical retail copies of PC games just come with a code in case. They used to include all the install discs which was reduced to a single disc to get you started and now nothing.

Yes I agree on the PC side. Thanks for the reply.

If you're the kind of person to rely solely on playstation plus extra or deluxe, then digital would be fine for you. Personally I went with disc as I often trade campaign games with friends because once you finish the game (and no longer want to replay it) it basically loses all value.

      • +1

If a lot of people trade games, how would game devs make money?

        • +1

Normally I only end up trading with 1 or 2 people, so at best it's reducing a small percentage of sales. But realistically a lot of people buy games either on release or once it's old and heavily discounted on Amazon or big w or something. I'd say trading is more common in younger people, especially back in high school. Once you get older, many have the money to buy whatever games they want, so are less likely to trade. It just depends on your gaming friend group really :)

Devs are doing fine even with used games. A lot have to be sold near when the game is released. Waiting around for a used copy typically won't save you much near launch since everyone wants to play it and only a few people will try resell because they don't like it.
It's like asking how authors make money if people can sell their used books.

Of course that doesn't stop Sony and Microsoft pushing towards an all digital system. This serves them since they can cutout all the retailers and set prices as they please and no second hand market to compete with.

        • Subscription services.

        • It’s the great grandson of the “don’t copy that floppy” guy

I’m sure the games industry will be dead any day now because of all these secondhand games

          Yep

          Any day now

Unlike our thriving arcade and pinball industry where nobody can secondhand anything

          • @GrueHunter: It all depends on how old you are and how much you make and most importantly what you were thought at home since you were a kid.

The point is, as long as there is an option to buy cheaper games many/most would still do it. Be it sale or trading. Its human mentality. I usually buy games on steam sales as I game on PC. I can still pirate or get a cracked game, but I earn enough and also realise developers deserve the money. Atleast buying games on steam sale, game devs still get some. Trading up only helps shops/buyers/sellers and nothing goes to devs. Its just a matter of removing the drive altogether from the console and boom - all that ends.

I think sony is worried they will lose all those "copy that floppy" guys grandsons will end up buying a PC instead. I think going forward, MS and sony will just discuss this and remove it altogether as a cost cutting/money making stragegy. Like Lisa and Huang price fixing GPUs.

@[Deactivated]: You are on OzBargain asking why people want to save money by legally sharing a disc, making out as though they are doing something unethical.

What are your thoughts on hand me down clothes for children?
Or grown sisters sharing dresses that often are only worn once?
Thoughts on homebrand vs name brand?
              Aldi vs local green grocer?
Buying any other item used that still has value on the second hand market?

Please hand in your OzBargain membership.

              • @tensionday: I definitely am not. But I dint like the way I was called out by Grue Hunter.

But either way, most games unlike cloths are mostly used once - atleast in most cases. So I was wondering how devs made money if they made it legal to sell used games. Just curious. Nothing to do with OZB. I am not the typical OzB buy now think later guy. So am not handing over my license yet :P

            • @[Deactivated]: Physical makes more sense as it's still worth something.

Digital is a license which is hard to sell unless you sell your account.

only takes a few bargain bin grabs or cheap second hand physical games to make up the difference instead of paying full rrp on ps store

    • +3

I like to collect and own my games and media. Having games only on a streaming service is like a long term rental.
