Need Help Determining a Good Wi-Fi 6/6E Router under $700

I am looking for a tri-band wifi 6/e that has decent range (needs to cover a two story house of approx. 400 m^2). Have a couple of pcs and consoles that will take up the wired connections and under 15 wireless devices. I know that the routers that I am looking at are probably overkill for my situation but I just want something good that will last for a while. The budget is under $700 but if there is something that is significantly cheaper that performs just as well I would greatly appreciate it you post a link.

Here are a couple of routers that I have been looking at:

https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/networking/modems-routers/ubi…

Let me know if any of these are a good choice and whether it would be worthwhile to wait for wifi 7.

Thanks in advance!

    Unifi, always unifi.

Maybe. Their consumer stuff isn't the greatest, and their more enterprise stuff is difficult for many people to setup and troubleshoot.

OP, what speed is your internet?

You mention some devices will be wired. Does that mean you have ethernet throughout the house? That will open your options for mesh points without needing tri-band..

Also, what is your tech level? I'd be inclined to agree with nedski if I knew you'd be comfortable with prosumer level.

This review of the Ubiquiti Alien is quite solid… if only we had the same version in Australia as they do overseas. Last I checked (maybe this has changed, so you'll need to do your own searching to verify), the Australian release was neutered a band.

      • Hey,

I’m currently on 100/50 iirc but will be upgrading soon to make use of the new router. I guess I am somewhat tech savvy but to be on the safe side I think I am better off getting consumer level hardware for now. I don’t really want to get a mesh setup atm so tri-band is a must.

  • Have a look at TP-Link Deco XE75 Pro Mesh WiFi 6E Router

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/networking/modems-&-routers/100412-deco-xe75-pro(2-pack)

I've got a pack and works great! Easy to use and manage.

    • This is available for $570 for 3 pack on good guys commercial

      • Um what?! Got a link by any chance?

        • You need Good Guys Commercial access to be able to view. Have on search on OzB for how to get access

  • I have this one:

    https://www.asus.com/au/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/…

IMHO it's excellent. Covers a large 2 storey house a defence amount of outdoor space.

I can also definitely recommend NOT buying Amplifi. The Asus above has vastly, vastly better range.

    • Yeah I have heard that ASUS routers are the way to go in terms of range, only problem with that router is it is not tri band. Do you have any recommendations for ASUS routers that have tri-band?

      • Not specifically, but I have found in the past that Asus basically scales with price, so I imagine if they have something in that sort of price range with your preferred features it will be decent.

PS obviously "defence" = "decent" above

      • Don't get the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 for $899 @ PLE.

        ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router $675 Delivered @ Amazon AU.

Wi-Fi 7 requires regulatory approval in Oz, a router with it will cost much more than $700 and your computer and mobile can't take advantage of it yet.

  • Do you have ethernet cabling around your house? What internet speed are you upgrading to? One router probably won't provide good coverage for a 2 story 400sqm, so probably best to go mesh. There's a few ways to do mesh

    • Yeah Ive got Ethernet points throughout the house. I Actually realised range isn’t a problem for me as my I’ve got my nbn box put in a cabinet at the centre of my house and the router is there too. I’ve tested the range with my wireless devices and the signal strength and speeds are fine. My current router is a really old dlink from 2014 so surely any router from nowadays wouldn’t perform worse.

  • Here's an option that will.perform better than a single high end router: 2 Xiaomi AX6000 - 1 downstairs and 1 upstairs connected in mesh via ethernet backhaul. They are $170 delivered from AliExpress (so $340 for 2).

Plenty of people on OzB use them. Here's a review:
