How Much Do You Pay for Your Chicken Breasts?

My local chicken wholesaler pulled a swifty on me today - Chicken Breasts (Skin On) went from $9/KG to $12/KG. It's a staple protein in our house for pasta dishes, dog food, etc. because of it's affordability (certainly not for it's flavour). I hadn't seen the price move on these in about 3 years so my chicken wholesaler would probably argue that they were well due.

Left me wondering though what is the going rate amongst the savvy shoppers? Nearest to the pin if you're paying like $8.79/KG, obviously.

Are you only asking about chickens?

  • +3

I wonder what the average size of a chicken breast is. Right now I just keep a mental note of the expiry date on the whole chickens at my local IGA and because they're not high turnover I can usually come back on that day and pick them up for $7 each.

    • -2

      About a B cup.

    • When I worked at a Woolies deli some 15 years ago it was approx 4 breasts to the kilo so around 250g each give or take. I feel like they might have ballooned a bit since then though.

    $80.08

Never paid for something I don't buy.

It's dark meat e.g. thighs and drumsticks for me.

Fortunately some people like the breasts, otherwise the thighs would be more expensive than it already is.

Why are you feeding your dog breasts? You should be feeding them chicken wings which is like a 1/3 of the price.

    • Used to feed the dog raw chicken wings but then she started to get weak / lame in the back legs and a friend mentioned polyradiculoneuritis https://peninsulavet.com.au/pet-advice/the-risks-of-feeding-…. Obviously we don't have conclusive evidence that she had it but her legs are better now and nowadays we give her raw lamb neck pieces which she LOVES and are also cheap.

Oh, I also purchase dark meat but find the price on that a bit less stable anyway? More of a thigh man myself.

      • If you’re also a thigh man, why you buying breast?

        • Wife doesn't like thigh, thigh typically too $$$ for dog

          • @milkabuck: Wife is cockblocking you.

I generally buy the thigh with bone in.

I fillet it myself as I like the skin.

            • +2

@JimB: I also buy thigh but shhhhh don't tell my wife

        • Can someone not like two things at once?

    • You're more of a leg man than a breast man.

      • +1

        Happy with either haha

Dark meat is the tastier for sure but horses for courses, I wouldn't use dark meat in a pesto for example or it'd be a puddle of oil.

  • +1

I think Katie Price (Jordan) pays more than $15/kg for her breasts

  • +1

Wait, you guys can afford chicken breast?

  • +6

Whatever the prices at Woolworths/Coles are ultimately which is about $10.50. No good butchers around but I doubt the savings over the year would warrant me finding one over just buying everything in one shop.

Also it's really sad how many cringe posts about breasts there are above. Do Ozbargainers not talk to females at all? Or are they all still in high school? I'm not sure.

      Do a poll.

I just paid approx $2,50 at Aldi for 400g frozen chicken nuggets, I cook them for the cats

    • +7

These are bad for your cats Pam.

      Don't kill them with kindness.

Which contain approximately 0% chicken breast, and about 50% "reclaimed" chicken, combined with whatever other filler and coating they mix in.

I'm all for a sneaky chicken nugget occassially, mentally ignoring what I know the contents are, but it's definitely not a good idea for cat food :/

  • because of it's affordability (certainly not for it's flavour)

Consider trying thighs instead, for more flavour. Better still buy and cook them bone-in for taste, if the recipe allows.
Thigh fillets used to be cheaper than breasts, but too many people have caught on to this. Still, not much more $, and worth it, if you are missing flavour.

    • I eat thigh, wife doesn't (maybe because i don't shave my legs?)

  • +1

I wait until i see craploads reduced at a massive discount then stick as many as i can buy in one of my freezers and as a result dont run out that often and prob pay $4-5 kilo on average

  • +1

$22 per/kg from a local farm to table supplier. Free range, and much better than supermarket. In a pinch I find the macro organic from Woolworths to be a good option, too!
That said, we don't eat copious amounts of meat. For us it's quality over quantity (quality includes the quality of life the chicken had, which a lot of people either forget, or simply don't care).

I 100% am with you. Nothing is worse than being a cheapy on low grade quality chicken breast where it is grainy and disgusting.

Spend the extra for the quality, and enjoy your dinner without the negative thoughts of how crap it tastes!

    • $22 a Kilo — are you serious- when you have not even seen them grow up, and you have not witnessed what sort of life, and how long they lived? Just go on a nice country drive next time and pick out your own happy chicken. You poor thing

      • I’m perfectly happy with the meat I purchase, and knowing its origins. Thank you, though!

        • So Sorry- I lost myself for a min. and forgot the question was about chicken breast meat only, as opposed to whole chicken which would cost at least $44 for a very small whole chook.
My apologies and Thankyou for your graceful reply.

          • @Debt Free: I actually misread the question. I pay $22 per/kg for chicken thigh. I don't really buy breast.

  • Lilydale bulk pack, buy up and freeze when on special.

    Free-range.

  • +1

i usually buy the extra large whole chickens and chop them up at home.
they're usually around $4-5/kg when not on sale

  • +1

Don't eat breasts. Just bone in thighs which are tastier and juicier

  • +1

for me it is more important who I buy them from, than how much I pay. For example I would rather starve to death than buy the Coles homebrand chicken, and the Aldi homebrand Chicken— makes me vomit just thinking about their Chicken.
But I do buy Woolworths ready made hot roast chicken.
I just like to know how stressed out the lives of the Chickens I eat were- Maybe I should raise and eat my own Happy Life Chickens?

  • +1

You can disect your own chicken.
I buy 2 whole chickens for like $14.

I use the breasts and tenders for Schnitzel. The legs and wings get seasoned and baked in the oven. The skin is oiled, salted and put in the oven to make chicken crisps / crackle (whatever you want to call it - it's delicious). The thighs are put aside for soup. The frame is roasted on high heat in the oven and then thrown in a pot with some other stuff to make stock, which will then become the soup base. I get something like 16 meals out of those 2 chickens, depending how big they are.

  • Slightly off topic, but does anyone in Adelaide know where can you get free-range thigh and breast with bone and skin?

Has to be real free-range, not supermarket RSPCA approved.
