  • Once again the rrp of $2199 is crap, billyguyatts.com.au has it for $1399

  • I don't mean to sound like a dick, but how does a cup warmer add enjoyment? Kinda made me giggle

    • +5

im sure it feels nice to sit on top of the machine ;)

    • +7

drinking coffee/hot chocolate from a warm cup keeps the drink hotter for longer

before I make a coffee at home or work I will always fill my cup with boiling water and let it sit for a bit to warm/heat the cup up

      • u made me giggle…..isn't that microwave' job - I wonder

    • +1

In addition to what tith said about keeping the drink warmer for longer, making coffee in a warm/hot cup results in a much better texture to the crema from the extraction, hence longer enjoyment and better flavour as listed.

  • Very good price and deal.

  • +3

I might not be a COTD fan, but that is a great deal.

    • +2

Indeed it is, wish I had a reason to get one :/

      • Get it. Coffee machines are buff!

      • it will pay for itself in 2 years

  • +1

The Phillips web page says 2 year warranty - COTD says 1… refurbished?

    • Either that or a parallel import and COTD are providing the warranty. Could just be a mistake too.

Does anyone know whether this thing has a steam wand? The website is very sparse on the details. If I wanted to get frothed milk separately, could I do it? The reason is that I'm keen on learning some latte art, so would this machine be a suitable one?

    • It does have one

    • if you care to read that website it states: "Steam wand makes delectable cappuccinos & more!" it is in green - 4th line on the website. and if you look at the picture, the thing on your left sticking out of the machine an pointing down is the steam wand ;)

      • Thanks for the reply, but the COTD web page appears to be inaccurate. I had a look at the brochure too, and unfortunately, that was pretty vague as well, which is why I posted the question. Greenie4242 has pretty much given a definitive reply.

I should add, this does have an automatic frother, just not a manual steam wand. There's a video on youtube. As far as I can see, it's the same model: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4-HgGRMcBU

        • Glad you posted this - fter watching the video, I would NEVER buy this machine! It looks like a massive pain in the arse, having to pull out magnetised plastic plates, remove dispensing heads, slide in frothing cartridges, fill milk jugs, connect pipes. I remember now why I never bothered with the automatic frothing 'feature' of my old machine.

One Touch? Bullshit! One touch, after you've already touched five other items in preparation. Remember too that you'll have to clean each and every single part of that milk frothing unit after each and every cup of coffee! If you're making a few coffees at a time it might be worth it, but if you only make three cups a day, you can't leave the machine with stale milk in it for the next few hours between cups. You'll have to dismantle everything and wash it.

I'd always get a manual steamer. All you need is a jug and a cloth. Milk goes in jug. Steam it. Wipe wand clean with cloth. Pour milk and wash jug. Finished.

        • +2

Milk goes in jug. Steam it. Wipe wand clean with cloth. Run steam briefly through wand again. Pour milk and wash jug.

          Fixed it for you.

        • Thanks, I skipped the flushing with steam part. I should have had a cup of coffee first to wake myself up before writing that!

        • Have used a machine like that at office and it's not that bad really. The reason is that the milk container can simply be refrigerated, so you only clean it once every few days. And I believe the machine has self cleaning capabilities for the dispenser.

There is no mention anywhere on the Philips website of a steam wand, because it DOESN'T HAVE ONE. CotD have an incorrect description their website, which is typical of them having no knowledge of their products.

A read of the instruction manual PDF downloaded from the Philips website confirms there is NO STEAM WAND - The 'wand' that you see in the photo can ONLY produce hot water. It will NOT allow you to froth your own milk manually.

I have a Saeco Royal Professional, which has both a 'cappuccino' steamer and a traditional steam wand. The cappuccino doesn't heat the milk enough, and makes pretty awful froth. I always froth milk manually with the steam wand. This method is not possible on this CotD machine, otherwise I'd be buying one myself.

      • Many thanks for the detailed reply - helped me make a decision immediately. Might I ask, why would you consider replacing your Royal Professional with this one (assuming it had a steam wand)? I assume it's a reason other than longevity? The reason I ask is that I would prefer not to spend money on a machine if it won' last me many many years.

        • +1

My Saeco Royal Professional lasted maybe 10 years, I was given it four years ago after a friend replaced it. One of the valves gummed up in the cappuccino frother, so he bought a new one. Luckily he gave me his old one, because it worked fine for another four years, but then a few months ago the water pump broke. I've really been missing it! It's probably a relatively easy fix but I just haven't had the time yet. I think it cost about $2,400 originally. Their replacement unit was a refurbished slightly updated version of the same model which cost about $1,200 direct from Saeco.

If this CotD machine had a manual steam wand I'd definitely consider buying it, but probably still keep the old one as a spare.

I hate to say it but these newer machines probably won't be built to the same standard as the older machines. Anything with lots of buttons will definitely have a microcontroller inside, and guaranteed it'll be the microcontroller circuit board or control buttons that break before any of the mechanicals. Even though electronics are supposed to last 'forever' as there are no moving parts, circuit boards HATE humidity and hot/cold cycles - Coffee machines are all about humidity and hot/cold cycles!

I have four broken 'automatic' coffee machines in the garage, all of them have perfectly working pumps/valves/heaters but the electronics are shot. They could be used manually if I hooked up some weirdo steampunk manual controller, but it defeats the purpose of having an automatic coffee machine in the first place!

        • 8-10 years sounds ok. But 4 broken machines? By my reckoning, these things need to last a while to justify the money they demand.

        • and the pump costs about $40-50….

Don't forget to use ILOVECATCH code for 5% off

  • I'm sure it has a standard steam wand. I have the Synthia from harvey Norman 6 months ago. Got the free cups and jug from Philips saeco too! It was slightly cheaper. I say wait till jan-feb if u want coffee machine bargains :)

    • Thanks for the heads up. Why would they be cheaper in jan-feb? Any ideas on what a good price for a model with similar specs to the above would be? (with a steam wand however)

      • If you're in Sydney, there's the Aroma Coffee Festival on at The Rocks this coming Sunday 29th July:

        http://www.therocks.com/sydney-Things_To_Do-The_Rocks_Aroma_…

There will be many companies selling all sorts of different machines, with demo machines and discounts available. It'd be a fantastic place to look for a new coffee machine :)

        • Thanks, am in Melbourne unfortunately. But I'll keep my eye out. What kind of discounts can you expect? And how much for a decent machine like this one, except with a steam wand?

        • I'll have a look on the weekend, if I can find any good deals with steam wand I'll pick up some brochures. They often have the specials running for a week or so after the festival, because they know people aren't going to be walking around with $2,500 in their pocket and can't get home with a 20kg coffee machine on public transport! I'll PM you if there's anything particularly outstanding in small numbers, and put a deal up on OzBargain if there are any deals that would be available in large numbers.

"I say wait till jan-feb if u want coffee machine bargains :)"

That's a long time to wait without a decent cup of coffee :-)

    • If you have a read through the manual - there is NO steam wand, only a hot water wand:

      http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hd8930_13/hd8930_13_…

Some other models may have a separate steam wand, but this one doesn't.

  • Condition is listed as brand new

People still buy these old fashioned crappy things??

"A fool and his money are easily parted"

    • +3

You have chosen a suitable user name.

  • +1

Wow no steam wand, that really sux. I have an earlier model Saeco and it is awesome, I was going to buy this (because it is newer and has a double boiler) until I found out about that. Properly foamed milk can make or break a coffee. My machine will probably last a good few more years yet anyway, it just sux having to wait for the boiler to heat for the steam, double boilers are instant.

EDIT: I'm going to neg just so people can easily find this info here. No steam wand really is a dealbreaker for many unfortunately. But its still a good deal for those that don't do foamy milk.

    • +3

Actually, it does have milk frothing, just not a manual use stream wand. See my previous post for a YouTube link.

      • +2

I've got to admit, I was wondering why the specs would list "Insulated milk container to keep milk at optimum temperature…& dishwasher safe Cappuccinatore" if there was no utility for adding heated/frothed milk to the beverage! ;)

I think a lot of guys like to have the manual steaming option though, mainly for optimal control over milk frothing because as well we all know that one can get farty and bloated with a foamy latte! :p

      • +1

        Yeah, I should have said…
"But it's still a good deal for those that don't do proper foamy milk".

    • +2

I think the neg is valid because CotD lied (or to be nice to them, made a mistake) when they said it had a steam wand. There's a HUGE difference between a steam wand and an automatic cappuccino frother. If I bought the machine based on their statement "Steam wand makes delectable cappuccinos & more!" I'd be demanding a full refund. Thankfully I dug deeper and looked at the instructions first, with thanks to the great OzBargainers who posted direct links to the manufacturer's product page. Thanks also to nuwang for posting that video. Those things were only worth about $40, if it happened with a $799 product I'd be truly p*ssed!!

I've bought two products before from CotD and had to go to great effort and pains to return them for a refund when their descriptions were completely wrong. Yet two years later, they still sell the same products with unaltered incorrect descriptions. Stupid.

It's still a good deal though, as any comparable machine will set you back at least $1,200.

      EDIT: Nice Zoolander reference StewBalls!

  • +1

I think it is a fairly good deal.

In comparison, I bought a Delonghi magnifica a few years ago, similar make and it's never let me down.

This particular deal is very good for the price, also compared to all other similar build machines.

  • …I hate cleaning up..else this and many other coffee machines would have been bought over the years.
