AX1500 link gives 404. Solid devices but their firmware/UI is the main let down (I have AX1500), particularly compared to ASUS' feature set

Cheers for the warning about the firmware. Is that true of all the TP-Links?

I haven't had a router like this for years but will need one soon for HFC NBN.

Last time I had Open-WRT setup on an Asus, but can't be bothered maintaining all that this time.

      Any recommendations?

      • The TLDR is that the Tp-link firmware is "fine" but compared to Asus and the ability to flash good opensource firmware its kind of why bother for power users.

        • +1

I find the default firmware pretty sufficient for most users, what else would a flashed firmware offer that can be useful?

          • +1

@KaTst3R: From memory (and its been a while since I looked into it) is that the Asus firmware has gotten really great but still doesn't offer perfect VPN/DNS support. its one of the main reason people use it

The firmare is called asuswrt-Merlin if you want to look into it

  • I have fttp, if I get this can I connect to NBN w/o having any other devices?thanks

    • +1

      Yes

      • FTTN requires a modem and then this router is that correct?

      • +1

        Thank you

    • Yeah you can have this plugged directly in the the NBN ntd in the house. Don’t think any isp’s force you to use their routers. Worst case is you’ll have to setup pppoe on it to get a connection. All depends on your isp.

Use a local plug and grab this for $188
Limited-time deal: TP-Link Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 AX5400 Mbps Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Router, OneMesh™ Supported, Dual-Core CPU, TP-Link HomeShield, Ideal for Gaming Xbox/PS4/Steam, Plug and Play (Archer AX72)

No, definitely don't buy a router from the UK as they have a lower signal strength than Australian models.

      • -1

Or. Buy a high spec UK router with multi gigabit capabilities and mesh with au routers.

      • Fine for apartments

      • Would you please provide more info or a source?

My understanding is that the router provided a signal strength compliant with the country in its settings, so it may only run at lower power if the device is set as operating in the UK.

I just contacted TP-Link Tech support and they confirmed the only difference between a UK sourced model and a local AU sourced model is the power adapter (and I specifically queried the wireless signal strength).

I checked but this router is not supported by OpenWRT firmware.

Wifi 6 Routers with OpenWRT support can be found here

Good bargain but stay away from TP-Link Archer for performance. Buy cheap. Buy twice

Yeha my tp link modem from Superloop is hot garbage VR400

  • Any good small form factor modems to use in tandem. I'm talking no wifi, phoneline in Lan out to this router kind of thing? Does that exist?

  • Hi Can anyone shed some light on difference between Ax1800 vs Ax3000.? I dont intend to bridge, but i do have up to multiple devices up to 8. Currently using Archer D7 | AC1750 for the past 10 years, my furthest bedroom, my do get half the signal. lately, my routers been playing up turning off the wifi signal. wondering if i should get AX1800 or AX3000.

Sounds like heat soak causing those particular problems. The greater the rated bandwidth, the greater the cooling is needed. Bigger heatsink, don't store in a cupboard. Minimum clearances from walls and barriers will make a big difference. Use USB, 12v or 240v fans to keep from building an oven type, hot air cavity

    • Even when I'm using a 5g phone as a hotspot, I have a cooling fan directly pointed at the device.

      • Thanks for sharing your thought. I have placed my unit on an open shelf. However instead of putting it flat on the surface, i prop it up and let it sit on a vertical, used a small object to prop up at the back, thought it looks cool. 😆

Firstly, do note that AX3000 has three versions. AX50, AX53 and AX55 (i know, shitty naming of products). Assuming you are referring to the latest AX55 model, the biggest two difference are

      1) 5ghz signal has 2400Mbps while the AX1800 only do about 1200Mbps.
      2) AX55 has a USB port which is useful for people who want to directly connect an SSD for file sharing or printer sharing.

I have the AX55, works very well, hasnt skipped a beat since i got it about 8 months ago. It will be a big upgrade to your current router (in terms of coverage and speed) if you have the latest devices like PS5, Iphone 14 etc which all has Wifi 6.

      • Thanks for your input. about to jump the gun only to find out that the "deal" is not really a deal ($40 more than not long ago). hmmm… let me sit on it a bit.

  • Showing as $132.95 with free delivery via Harris Technology when I click the link now.

  • Bought 3000 for $133.67 less than 4 months back . So I dont think this is right price

Go Asus or go home… 53u or 58u

    • Is that because of the interface? I'm fairly technically literate but have been using Netgear up till now.

      • +1

Better components and can use open source firmware to have full control

        • Thanks. Is OpenWRT fairly well regarded from a security point of view?

          • +1

@saintpat: I'm no security expert but safer than open backdoors left by certain vendors. Gets regular updates, but by no means bulletproof

  • Any idea comparing to previous deal of ASUS RT-AX56U AX1800 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/757243. I did order one but looks like no delivery date yet. Looking to upgrade old TP-Link Archer VR-1600V.

    • If you've changed your mind and live in Sydney I'd happily buy it off you

Is it just me or is $20-30 off not much of a sale?

  • Can anyone recommend a good modem / wifi router? I only have the cheap one from iinet.

    • Yeah I need a recommendation too for a good modem/wifi router. Have HFC connection at home. Currently using TP Link Archer VR1600v

  • Anyone have a recommendation for a 4g/5g router?
