The 12400 is exceptional value. Wait 3/4 years and pop in a second hand i7/9 13th gen for cheap.
Exactly what I plan so I chuck in a Z690M in my rig. I got the 12400f for $210 a year ago since Futu Online forgot to jack their price during promo.
Will wait for i7-13700K $389 deals in 6 months
But then you will be waiting for 14700k $429 deals in 6 months.
But you may have to upgrade the motherboard at the same time.
I'm always amazed at how little improvement you get for upgrading from the i3 to the i5 or even this i7 in games.
Looks like 0 to 10%, depending on the game:

Not much for 2.5 times the price.
for games it doesnt matter much because its all on one core and hzzz.
i still have i7 9700k and to upgrade it would cost me around $1k for maybe 15% gain in gaming at 2k.
not real worth it.It's definitely not on one core any more. These days it depends heavily on the resolution and game.
If you're playing a graphically heavy shooter at 4k, you're going to be super gpu bound, so cpu won't matter.
If you're playing a simulation heavy game like anno at FHD, you're much more likely to be cpu bound (and hence get a benefit from a better CPU)
The original comment's sentiment however isn't wrong. An i5 is a great place to be for gaming.
Well yeah, not everyone is a gamer
Nice price for a great processor
Cheaper on Amazon US via AU after delivery & GST is added back to this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/758183
So… you'd pay $17 more to not have a free book?
OzB membership revoked.
Damn. Bought an i5 12th gen for $250 recently, would have paid for this instead for sure.
