Why Are Downvotes So Rare?

On ozb we should be seeing more downvotes. Right now it's too rare. Downvotes should mean "this deal is not that good". Instead the way it's being used right now is like "this vendor is a scammer" or something heavy.

Instead the way it's being used right now is like "this vendor is a scammer"

How is that a bad thing? Alerts mods to it if it actually is a scam.

    or something heavy.

    ???

Downvotes should mean "this deal is not that good"

99% of downvoted posts I see are because they are trash deals… Take all the UGG Aus posts for example. A decently-sized proportion of all rep posts for that matter (not all, some)

    • +3

To downvote a user also has to have at least one comment on the post. Some people are lazy and won't downvote a post because they can't be bothered commenting first to be able to do so.

  • +14

Downvoting usually requires an objective reason on why it’s a bad deal. Just a “I don’t really like it” isn’t enough. See voting guidelines

  • +10

Downvotes should mean "this deal is not that good".

Not really. Negative votes are to let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product. Not a subjective view on if you think it's good or not.

    Read the Voting Guidelines: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

For example: I don't think spending $1,000 on a vacuum cleaner is a deal (for ME) even if it's $250 off full price. That's not a valid reason to downvote if that's the cheapest price it's available for.

    • "this deal is not that good".

I think op meant more ilke, this aint a bargain?

Eg There is a relatively common occurrence of random Artiss furniture re-sellers that pop up with new accounts now and then, but then get neg bombed as invariably there is ALWAYS at least 2-3 others selling exactly the same POS at a cheaper price.

Instead the way it's being used right now is like "this vendor is a scammer"

    From the voting wiki;

    Issue with retailer

I would say that a retailer or someone presenting themselves to be a retailer that had a track record of scamming or there was something scammy about their listing should 100% be negged.

    • +3

If it's actually a scammer, you should report the post to have it removed.
Give it a neg too, just to alert potential buyers while a moderator reviews your request

      • +4

        I do both.

  • +5

OP’s 1st deal post went down like a lead balloon, it shows people are downvoting.

Perhaps the splinter is living rent free?

    • +2

Lol was the only non Store rep post for that store too…

    • +3

      Still bitter after 12 years??

      • With loss aversion, to stop crying and breakeven, one may need to "win" 5 times the amount they lost… so the crying may last for a while yet.

    • Good find lol. I forgot about that. But now that you've reminded me, yes wow! so mad. Never posting dealz again.

  • All Red Rooster deals should be mandatory down votes

    • Same with Harvey Norman "deals"

    • +2

      You dont rate RR or…?

The chips are god tier. Everything else is trash imo especially now that the ripper sub got changed.

      • -1

Horrendous subjective opinion you hold there.

KFC #1, in every way, especially chips (Except for the Coleslaw, but KFC caters to all!)

        • +1

I meant everything else at RR is trash other than the chips.

I am a massive kfc fiend if you are not familiar with my posts.

Regarding kfc chips look they are very good fresh but imo the rr ones go way too hard and come in a family pack or as I refer to it, my snack size.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: For me KFC Fresh, Salted, Unsalted or even Soggy, in any which way, are still the superior chips.

If you complete the KFC Survey, you can get an additional free Drink + Small Chips which is basically a family pack, now that is Value!

            • @Godric: haha i have never claimed a kfc survey actually i should hand in my ozbargain badge

at one point i was having kfc, no word of a lie, up 2-3 times a week. far out so many lost chances for free drink + small chip

        • Have you actually eaten Red Rooster in the past five years?

Red Rooster has fried chicken that rivals KFC’s and is a very good alternative. The potato and gravy at Red Rooster is also really good and tastes more like home made potato and gravy than KFCs, where the powdered potato is extremely bland. The chips are good. They also have healthier alternatives and sides like peas and sweet potato chips. They have roast chicken and fried chicken.

If I had to choose I would say Red Rooster because they used to be terrible but have done a huge 180 in the past few years.

      • +1

Everything else is trash imo especially now that the ripper sub got changed.

Disagree with this. Their fried chicken is great and so is their classic roast, which is probably one of the healthier alternatives on the market when it comes to fast food because it has vegetables that are more nutrient dense than potato chips.

Their chips are also very good as you mentioned. Their Hellfire burger used to be way better than the Zinger burger before they changed the chicken patty to a tender.

It's sad Red Rooster still gets a lot of crap despite the company basically doing a 180 in recent years by expanding their menu, renovating their stores, implementing delivery etc. Some people have worked extremely hard to turn the business around yet it seems people out there just can't shake off the image they have of their company in their head.

        • Reno

My local still the biggest dive lol

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Not sure where you're located, but out of 4 stores I've been to in Sydney and 3 in Melbourne, only 1 of them hasn't been renovated yet. I think I know of another in Melbourne that hasn't been renovated.

Either way, the company has turned itself around after a high-up executive went into the business (from McDonald's no less), people should be more open minded about it instead of automatically thinking "ew Red Rooster? Why would anyone eat that?"

    • And any big man tyrone "deals"

  • +3

You voted twice in 2022… If you're not neg voting (or really even pos voting), why should other people?

    • +4

I love me a good neg vote

Sometimes forget there is an actual upvote button :D

      • +4

        Jees, negative Nancy

      • +2

You are keeping OzBargain safe and full of quality deals. Thanks for your hard work!

  • +2

Imo if its not a BARGAIN it should be negged if its presented by an associated seller / spammer (not going to name names).

If it's by a non-associated deal I suppose it can be user discretion.

An example is this Peter of Kensington deal, PoK deals usually post linking back to their website, but more often then not, the deal is actually $3-5+ cheaper getting it on their ebay store, either by way of free delivery, or the $5 monthly ebay plus voucher. Yet this one didnt get any negs.

  • +3

    Why Are Downvotes So Rare?

Because the guidelines make it 'hard' for them to stick.

  • +1

There’s also this weird notion that downvoting is ‘mean’ , as is highlighting any other better deals in the post.

Especially brand new accounts who post a crap deal/non deal then get butt hurt and accuse of ‘being bullied’ when a better deal is highlighted - like bro, it’s ozbargain not ozadvertising

  • -5

Down-voting on comments however - very common.

    • +1

Someone thinks you want to lead by example…

    • Not really IMO. I had just one comment on an old expensive watch deal that earned like -50 within a day but that was really a once off.

Also initial quick downvotes are not an accurate, the more time that passes and the more voters means the more accurate the feedback will be. So I could go back to that -50 comment and find out it's only at -8 now or something which would be more accurate.

The most downvoted comments I see get an average comment gets is around -5 so close to what you are seeing now. But I find most comments are either +1 (one person accidentally tapped big whoop) or it sits at 0. But a downvote is better than being completely ignored IMO.

      • See I got a downvote just now which tells me someone read my comment in full.
Arguing that downvoters "SHOULD HAVE upvoted my comment" seems a bit egotistical no? They have a right to their opinion and they expressed it.

    • And you can't downvote a Mod.
On Ozbargain everyone is equal - but some are more equal than others.

  • +1

It's the way the sites programmed.

I personally am not a fan of not being able to downvote offers without a comments (skews the system grealty).
Also the fact you only get 5 a day, can't go back and downvote offers after x days, can't comment on offers after x days.

I think at least we need to leave the comments and downvotes open after 30 days in case the deal ends up being a scam/dodgy and you can't point it out.

    • Can always report the post and get comments reopened

      • I think the real point is this is repeatedly brought up by users, gets knocked back by the admin and then sits in the background only to be brought up again.

Maybe there is an issue here…
Reddit seems to run well, maybe OZbargain should be more like them?

        • +2

I hope that last line was a joke…

Most deal threads don't need to stay open that long, and just leaves them open to being necroed, which gets really annoying in the forums ( wish forum posts got auto closed after 6 months of no replies)

          • +1

            @spackbace:

and just leaves them open to being necroed,

But I love necroeing. I have had plenty of old posts/comment section's on ozbargain where I wanted to comment/ask something but couldn't. Now I know I could have "requested to reopen" but since you have to do that manually I think it would start bothering the mods if I did it all the time.

I dunno though I often use google to find and go straight to ozbargain posts/comments so maybe how I browse it is unusual.

        • -1

Reddit seems to run well, maybe OZbargain should be more like them?

I've seen people bash reddit here more than praise it, I seriously doubt people want to go that way.

          • @Ghost47: Yeah but reddit is easy to bash? Kind of low hanging fruit.

Because honestly I don't think it's "Shitsville" like some do, but anything have to honestly say about it will come across as negative.

    • That's the core issue. This site is too positive, the way it's designed. I blame the lack of genuinely good deals mostly on the site design and resultant culture of positivity and "don't rock the boat" and "don't upset people even if the deal's bad"

      • -1

Toxic positivity is the term ya going for i think ;)

And i agree to an extent.

        • +1

And i agree to an extent.

          I agree as well.

I keep seeing Amazon AU post's where I've seen the item drop to that price every month on a regular basis and it even proves some of this if you simply looked up previous deals on the item.
Getting tired of calling them out in comments because it's happening constantly.

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm:

Getting tired of calling them out in comments because it's happening constantly.

Maybe you should try… downvoting those? By "calling them out" you would have already commented, and all you need to do now is to press that -1 button.

            • @scotty: Ok sure I can try that. Can't promise it forever though because after a few I probably CBF lol.

Honestly I was just about to go comment on a recent deal for the Anker Power adapter that I have seen at $59 price since forever.

  • +9

    5 neg votes a day isn’t enough

    • +5

      Username checks out

  • +2

Ozbargains system for this use case is actually better than reddit.

Instead of a popularity contest, downvotes are reserved for emergency situation when the deal has fatal flaws.

Downvotes would be used as an emotional currency because someone doesn’t like a brand etc. Scotty is just 200iq. System isn’t perfect but does the job most of time.

  • I think the neg voting guidelines are a bit restrictive and don't really allow for opinion. Whereas anyone can upvote a deal based on their opinion.
I've had a few downvotes removed before by mods so now I don't bother.

  • Everyone has already put in their 2c here regarding downvotes.

My only wish is to remove the voting system for forum posts and comments altogether.

At least for deals, you have to comment why the deal sucks before hitting the downvote button.

  • I pay no arrention to votes i assess thing on my own as i dont trust the votes.

    • +1

I pay no arrention to votes i assess thing on my own as i dont trust the votes.

Yeah but browse here regularly enough and you will notice there is no connection between high deal votes and "great deals".

Some deals just get heaps of votes but are absolutely crap. Or some deals get almost no votes even though it was an awesome deal because the deal expired (price reverted to normal) or became out of stock quickly (not many people are going to think it's a deal if they can't buy it).

One example of a crappy deal I saw recently get almost 500 positive votes was "$3 cashback for $30 gift card purchase". Like what? Who is bending over and doing a backflip over 10% cashback and on top of that it's $3 maximum! lol.
