Stop recommending UK routers. They have half the wifi output power.
they have removed the restrictions:

The UK / EU versions don't allow use of channels 149, 153, 157, 161, 165 (5.725 to 5.85 GHz). See here:

This has a very real potential of limiting backhaul availability and increasing channel congestion, especially if your network is overlapping with another 5ghz network.
I have the wifi 5 version of these and they have been really good over the past 2years. I love being able to filter content for the kids and block all their devices with a couple taps on the mobile app.
I also have the wifi 5 version and overall find them great, especially with the wired backhaul. Using the wireless backhaul was good too but it stopped working about once a month and I had to restart both routers - not a huge deal but I had the ability to wire them so I just did that.
I have these running my NBN HFC link. A Great unit, and the easy to use ASUS VPN when travelling is awesome. The QoS is sometime a little confusing but otherwise a great app allows great control
Would it be better to buy a set like this? Or an mesh enabled router such as the AX58U and get one of this as add on?
Will the XT8 be significantly better than this? Looking to upgrade from my Tenda MV6.
FYI, XDS only has 1 uplink port & 1 LAN port.
I bought the Netgear Orbi AC3000 about a year back and I'm pretty whelmed with the speed, and disappointed with the configurability. No way to block sites without their subscription service, no ability to disable or force 2.4 or 5ghz, and I can't remember what else was annoying.
Anyone have any frame of reference to if this would be a better solution?
I exactly had that router and moved to GT-AX6000. Orbi app had literally zero configurability. Plus needed controls for child devices, QoS & lots of other features which are standard and free. For me one GT-AX6000 covers whole house plus extra, where as orbi + satellite struggled even with hardwired backhaul.
Yeah I think I have come to the realisation that I probably don't need mesh and it's not giving me any better outcomes at all.
I have been using the Google Wifi mesh system for years now. They are great but don't have wifi 6. Does anyone know if these Asus routers have the smart features that Google Wifi has, like setting schedules of access for the kids etc? The Google Wifi is great, because I can just pull out my phone and give the kids extra time after they have completed a chore.
I believe so. At least Asus app has the feature to create family members, assign devices and reward them with extra time or block them. I don't have this router but I believe it will be a standard feature across asus routers.
UK version is cheaper at $402 ? May come with UK power plugs compared to AU power plugs.
