      • thank you!

Agree 2.5kw will do it easy.

    • +1

Depends on ceiling height, number of windows, which way they face, insulation.

The MHI sizing guide is a good place to start however there are more specific calculators out there.

      https://mhiaa.com.au/document/split-system-room-sizing-chart…

I have a 2.5kW unit in a master bedroom, probably 7x6 and it cools the whole room easily. I put 2kW units in bedrooms about the size of yours and they got them arctic in 15 mins. I don’t think you need anything bigger than 2kW for that size room.

      • I have a 3.5kW in a 5x4 bedroom and it's just enough due to windows, ceiling height, orientation and a few other factors. It's not as simple as floorplan size.

        • Fair enough, my insulation is good, standard ceiling height and shaded outdoor units probably add up to a best case scenario, so maybe 2.5kW is better for the average application to be safe.

  • Unit is awesome only drawback is the remote doesn’t have backlight. Need to use the mobile torch to change the temperature if I want to change in the middle of the night.

    • The backlit remote is one advantage of the Daikin however the power light on the Daikin is so bright you don't need a backlit remote anyway. I don't think it's adjustable on the Daikin either like it is on the MHI Avanti.

I'm in the market for a couple small unit for the bedroom and study. Hoping to try bunnings for a special order price beat by 10% with the above.

Can anyone find a better deal than $784? Delivery to Metro Melbourne

    • +1

Let me know how you go with the bunnings price beat

      • It worked for me last time via phone call and email. Hope it will work this time too

        • Very keen to know how you go with Bunnings price match. I am in NSW . Thanks

          • @asx100: Looks like someone else is successful.
Might need to call a few stores.
I failed on my first call last year. Then the 2nd store approved it with no problems.

        • YMMV I tried price match once in store and they don't do it because it has "wholesale" in the store name, nor they do "warehouse". It's bullsh** I know.

  • Thanks for sharing!

What's OzB's method of adding smarts to these? WiFi adapter for $200-ish (per unit, which I think is way too much these days) or Sensibo? Something else?

Also, if you have any recommendations on installers (VIC), I'm all ears. Thanks!

    • I was actually wondering the same, $140 per wifi at Bunnings per unit seems to expensive especially if you are buying multiple units

      • Sensibo for $99 when it's on special

    • I did have a Broadlink IR transmitter that is connected to Google Home that worked really well.

The only downside is that it doesn't know all the settings except if you save various states onto the Broadlink app.

So you won't be able to say "increase temperature/fan speed" but i would say "aircon 20" for "cool, 20 degrees, auto fan" or "heater 22" for "heat, 22 degrees, auto fan", etc

  • +1

Commenting just to give a +1 for MHI, our four units have been flawless over several years. I noticed on several return visits to Hong Kong with my wife to visit her family that it's one of the preferred brands over there too, if that helps with peace of mind (HK certainly sees a lot heavier aircon use than Australia lol).

  • +1

Has been a life saver in the past got the 7.1 unit installed for a large open plan. The efficiency and ability to heat/cool is great for a large area which leads to corridors etc.

Got 200 CB and got a 10% PB with Bunnings too. circa 2020 it was just on 1350… seems they have shot up a bit.

Doing this basically paid for the install.

    https://rungegroup.com.au/product/supply-only-mitsubishi-bro…

Although if you are in SE QLD try supporting the local supplier. - maybe get them to install?

    Hope it helps someone.

Just installed avant+ last winter, very quiet and cool, definitely one the the best aircon. Its indoor unit has cover for the whole unit, I like that design, but it probably make the unit bigger than others. Other thing is the installer connects the ourdoor unit power to electric wire inside the wall, then internal unit get power from outdoor unit through the wall. Better looking but I cannot switch it off from the wall or use a smart plug to check the power usage. Also I just installed power point on the wall near the indoor unit for the aircon but now useless, I wish someone will tell me that beforehand.

I choose Avant+ because it claim can purify the air too, can't tell how good is it. It also better at cooling than heating which suits me. Mind you aircon's rating for cooling and heating is not the same, choose what you need most.

    • +1

I'm pretty sure electrical codes require an isolator switch outside near the outdoor unit but maybe depends on what state.

      • Absolutely correct as of AS3000: 2017

  • Throwing an option out there. The Actron Air Serene Series 2. I did a lot of comparison between all the popular brands and really I could not seperate them out. They all had pros and cons in different ways. But when I found out about the Actron it had the same or was better in pretty much every way so I chose to install them. It seperated from other brands by the ability to can run at higher operating range of 60 degrees, sleek and modern units and remote with backlight. Has a clean function where it freezes and defrosts the coils.

    • +1

Sound like you got sucked into the salesman marketing gimmicks, actron is a decent brand but most of the features above are just pretty close to useless or redundant nowadays. Almost all aircons have defrost cycle, working at 60 is next to useless because once it gets there you better dig a cave and start living underground or should be looking to move. These MHI units has self-illuminating button on the remote but in this day and age you want something better than that (controlling your ac through your phone, of which Pana and Fujitsu already included in their latest model, MHI is a bit slow on this tho)

      • You can call them gimmicks but those same features are in all the brands and no one can say that the MHI units look modern and sleek. Their indoor unit don't even display the temperature on the face of the indoor unit. Their remote is something that was acceptable perhaps 10 years ago as they haven't changed since the. An example is that the Actron you can set the fan speed from anywhere between 1% to 100% not a present range. Not that I use it but it's nice to have that option and not a hard software feature to add by the manufacturer. In my opinion A/C technology is pretty simple and we've been perfecting it for decades now. Usually things go wrong due to poor install and lack of maintenance. Now manufacturers can only differentiate themselves on 'marketing gimmicks'.

Regarding the 60 degrees it was more so that it effectively operates at a higher operating temperature and more robust. I found a lot of other models could only operate to around 45 degrees which we get those temps in Melbourne every now and then. WIth the defrost I actually mean it freezes the indoor unit coils so that it freezes it and defrosts it to clean dust on the coils. It is an indoor unit cleaning feature not a outdoor unit ice defrost feature. I only found that feature on the Hitachi (frost wash). It's not a simple drying of the coils by blowing air over it. Regarding wifi control that's not an issue due to other market options like the Sensibo which have usually better software control than the manufacturers.

MHI also don't coat their outdoor unit fins with anti rust coating commonly known as blue fin technology. I believe it's only on their Bronte series. I think Panasonic does though. So if you live near the coast it's something to consider if this gimmick is something you want.

Overall my conclusion with MHI was they are reliable and things haven't changed for a long time. Same with Fujitsu. It's more of a if it ain't broke don't fix attitude which some people want and happy to accept. That's perfectly fine.

        • MHI also don't coat their outdoor unit fins with anti rust coating commonly known as blue fin technology. I believe it's only on their Bronte series.

They definitely do that on their whole range - my 2017 Avanti has that coating as well as my brand new Avanti’s.

          • @Dogsrule: Maybe they've decided not to do that anymore at a point in time. When I read over the brochure on page 5 with the diagram of the outdoor unit. It has an asterisk saying avaliable only on certain units which I couldn't match up with the model numbers of all units at the end of the document.

            • @happyadventurer: Hmm I do actually see what you’re talking about in the brochure. All I can say is the condenser has some sort of blue coating and has zero corrosion after 5 years, maybe it isn’t ‘Blue Fin’ but it does work very well.

    • Actron is apparently made in NSW as well if that matters to you. You’ll pay for it though, not cheap units.

      • +1

I don't know if all their units are made in Australia but they are designed and tested in Australia for our conditions being an Australian company. In terms of price I found it to be same as the main brands if anything perhaps slightly cheaper.

    • How has the Actron been? Tossing up between Actron and MHI in the 2 - 2.5kw range.

  • I bought 2 in December :'(

  • +1

5kw unit can be installed on existing wiring or it needs new wiring from the meter box?

I remember for 7kw sparky ran a separate power and circuit braker.

    • Would need new wiring as it has to be on its own 20amp circuit breaker

  • How much does installation cost generally?

  • +1

Do any of these units have some sort of way to control power usage based on solar generation? (I have heard of things like DRED, but not sure how user controllable such things are).

    • +1

You could use a wifi IR transmitter to adjust the temperature up and down. Just need to find a way to link it to solar production.

      • Yeah I was hoping for something a bit more native where the maximum power input could be controlled directly. Varying temperature to control power input could be a bit hit and miss, even moreso with an inverter-based AC I'd imagine.

  • If anyone in Melbourne (west) know any good installer or electrician pls Pm us, thanks.

    • Same any installers in Melbourne please let us know. Melbourne west too

  • Air conditioning units are a wonderful invention. It is a shame that installation costs as much as the unit itself.

    • Only in Australia or country with high labour costs.

  • I got a 10% price beat on the 2.5kw Avanti from Bunnings if anyone is interested.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/757443

Their other models may be eligible too, but I didn't check.

  • +1

Oh! I had one of these installed in January! Thanks for the free money!

  • Recommended model for a bedroom?

  • I got a split system a/c from one of their dealers, fully installed frostair castle hill

  • For anybody who is curious, I lodged my application for 2 separate units on Sunday and received approval today. They said it will take up to 6 weeks for the cashback to be paid though.
