    Turkey in English.
Türkiye, Sūriyā and Ukraïna in their native languages and romanised alphabets, if you are writing those. Even The Guardian calls it Turkey, so hopefully this will not become a political cause.

And good on Woolies, for jumping on the free publicity bandwagon.

Given that this hasn't been posted on any official channels (I myself didn't know about it until I saw it appear on the homepage), I don't think publicity is a factor at play here.

Also, the official spelling is Türkiye. I don't really get the fuss about 'a political cause', not everything is a political issue.

        Its turkey

Pretty sure it changed recently. ABC Radio is pronouncing as Türkiye and for a reason.

In May 2022, Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu requested the UN refer to his country using its Turkish-language name: Türkiye.

The UN agreed, and it wasn't long before DFAT and the US State Department followed suit.

One month later, the ABC's internal language committee was asked for guidance as to whether content makers should use the new name. There were mixed views in the room: most agreed audiences wouldn't be familiar with Türkiye, but that didn't seem a good enough reason to reject an honest request from an incumbent government – and besides, it would usually be obvious from context what was meant. A compromise solution was offered in our style guide:

Türkiye, Turkey: As of May 2022, the country's official English name is Türkiye. Preference that spelling wherever possible. It may be necessary to explain the change.

They have bigger problems than their name.

        • +1

I'm getting images in my head. Their government are holding mettings about topics and agendas to discuss. This get brought up. And somehow it got put high enough up on the list that the UN had to be involved.

Pretty certain there are far better use of resources than thinking of what to call the country. The economy for starters.

          • @xoom: Dictatorships for beginners. Demand more respect, change your name, sponsor terrorist regimes, anything but taking real steps to improve living standards for your people.

No deal, calls don't connect through to Gaziantep or Aleppo.

            • @omcb: Aleppo, the otherwise war-torn city that is among the worst-hit areas by the earthquakes, has damaged network infrastructure? I'm shocked.

      • US State Department
Note: The official conventional long-form and short-form names remain “Republic of Turkey” and “Turkey”, respectively. “Republic of Türkiye” should be used in formal and diplomatic contexts. The conventional names may be used in place of or alongside “Türkiye” in appropriate instances, including U.S. government cartographic products, as it is more widely understood by the American public.

      • How is Türkiye pronounced?
        Tur-kee-yeh?

        • +2

          Yeh

    • +1

You should call them what they want to be called.

      • +5

Let’s start with North Korea and China

        • +1

          Not them

  • +3

Was confused what Türkiye was - looked enough like Turkey but idk I just wasnt sure - until I read an ABC article published today about it, lol. (My brain still pronounces it as Turkey…)

Confused about the Türkiye spelling with the country in the news after a deadly earthquake? You're not alone

How can they have an "official English name" that does not use the English alphabet? I'm not aware of any other country that expects this, and I'm further inclined to reject it because Erdoğan is the one asking. His motive seems to be he feels the country gets insufficient respect. How about dealing with all the government corruption and religious laws if you want respect? It is not because of the name or the bird.

Both are "correct", like Belgium and Belgique, but je ne parle pas français.

Are you still calling the Democratic People's Republic of Korea "N.Korea"?

    • +2

ABC on YouTube use Turkiye without the dots on the u. BBC still use Turkey. So there is zero consistency. ABC are too leftist even for ABC, and Media Watch called them out and forced them to half heartedly apologize. https://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/episodes/alice/101934920

      The country's name is Turkey.

      • Issue of least importance right this moment.

        • +1

Talking about it, or not, in no way affects the issue of most importance, which is obviously the free calls.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: To be honest this is what i had a reaction to.

In May 2022, Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu requested the UN refer to his country using its Turkish-language name: Türkiye.

For a country that has far bigger problems even before the earthquake happened. You would think the government would focus on resolving those problems first?

Oh but xoom what could the foreign minister possibly do to assist in the economic issues the country is facing? Perhaps drum up (more) trade with other countries. Sell Turkey oohh my bad i mean Türkiye to the world as a destination to go to.

Previously ABC used polish spelling of Poland in the piece of news. I’m looking forward to the day they start using mandarin and Arabic, as English lacks certain sounds only possible in those languages.

  • don't you mean Turkey ?

  • -5

Disappointed their wokeness did not extend to Syria or should I say الجمهورية العربية السورية

  • +20

It is absolutely classic ozbargain for a thread about free calls to a country suffering a huge natural disaster to turn into mouth breathers complaining about having to read the correct spelling of the name. Do you halfwits seriously have a problem with a nation wanting to be known by their real name? If I'd been known as Bob my whole life but at some point wanted to be called Robert would you berate me in the same way? I will never understand the conservative mindset.

    • +3

If I could +1 your comment, I would

    • -3

If you were widely known as Bob, and then randomly decided to annoy everyone by changing to Robert, that is your prerogative. But you’d always be a Dick to me

      • His name isn't Richard…

    • +1

Thank-you Hinee. As a Turk, call it whatever the f you want to. This isn't our issue ATM.

  • +8

OzB Family, call them Turkey or Türkiye, its not important at this very moment. There's a natural disaster with many people affected so lets hope more people are found alive. Thank you Woolies for giving those customers of yours who need to call home to check on their family and friends without the added burden of call charges and fees.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names are soul destroying
