  • Is it called yoga because it's flexible??

    • +4

Generally yes, they can fold all the way back and be tablet like.

  • Need a laptop for my daughter. Can this run Minecraft pretty well? Sorry not too tech savvy

    • +3

It's a great business laptop for the price, light and powerful. But it's not really suitable for gaming. It will run Minecraft on low/medium settings, but will get pretty hot and loud.

    • +8

While it can run Minecraft, I wouldn't say pretty well — though that said, Minecraft never runs as well as it could/should.

If you can stretch your budget up another $200, I would highly recommend it. Something like this is going to feel a lot snappier even in day-to-day use, and will have a much better hope of running Minecraft well. That said, I would wait a bit, as the comments on that thread suggest that better deals do crop up in that price category.

With Minecraft specifically you can make it run better on anything by installing a few performance-enhancing mods (which have no downsides, unlike performance-enhancing drugs). This may take you out of your comfort zone, but installing fabric modloader along with the top three mods on this list will give her a free ~50% performance uplift (at least) on whatever she's running Minecraft on now, and would also make it playable on this specific machine.

      • +1

I'd be suggesting something with at least 16GB of RAM for gaming, especially if some of that is going to be reserved for VRAM.

Otherwise Integrated Ryzen graphics is usually a good baseline option for gaming if the memory is dual channel.

  • +1

These are a bit slow and whiney. If you dont need the touch, look elsewhere. The CPU is already old and slow and the CPU inside a small 14" housing makes it further slow due to lack of cooling.

    • +3

Mines not slow and whiney (and at 8GB ram).

Its more than Adequate and I never hear the fan.

      • +2

My work place accidently sent me the gen2 with 7500U which is a later laptop than this and even opening chrome it used to whine. I sent it back and they sent me gen 6 which still whines but atleast the CPU is a 10th gen intel and far better. RAM does not matter, its the CPU that emits heat and is ultimately responsible for fan speeds. Maybe it was because I had connected 2 external monitors and the integrated GPU was working more.

        • Are you using a clean windows install, or a standard image your work puts on there? I've never seen a work image that isn't horribly bloated.

          • @Joker042: It aint the work image thats the issue. The heatsink is way too small in these. The fans are super duper small and thin,

    • +3

"These are a bit slow and whiney. If you dont need the touch, look elsewhere."

I knew a girl like that once

      • Thats an interesting new account :P

    • any cheap recommendations for a senior citizen

all he uses his current very ageing laptop for is emails and checking his online banking and paying online bills and maybe the occasional video call no games the closest thing to something being video demanding would be youtube

looking for something small he currently has a 13 or 14 inch laptop and it is perfect size

      lowest budget

      • Sorry mate, really dont know. I knew about this because i had one of these similar models.

        • All good thanks for replying I appreciate it!

      • I would say you should look for a laptop with a good bright screen and an illuminated keyboard. Some keyboard layouts are very difficult to get used to (for example when you have to hold Fn button to press keys like Home/PgUp/PgDn), so try to find something with a keyboard similar to his existing laptop.
The hardware is not so important, any laptop with SSD and 8GB RAM will handle these tasks.

        • Any cheap recommendations for under $300

His current one is still going on but not sure for how long so thinking of getting a backup

          • @AlienC: There aren't many options for this amount. Here is a used Dell from UN Tech:
            https://www.untech.com.au/products/dell-latitude-e7470-14-fh…

If the existing laptop is in working condition, just very slow, it may be cheaper to upgrade it - replace HDD with SSD and add more RAM.
It should give a big performance boost.

          • @AlienC: This one looks like a decent deal:
            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/755968

            • @doperst: nice finds good finds

i am not going to bite the bullet right now but as soon as i hear that his laptop is dead dead dead with no chance of coming back to life then these links will be of major use so i appreciate the finds my fellow ozbargainers

  • +39

Bought one from this deal, it says the condition is excellent, but I received one like this and this.

    • +6

Lol "excellent" with a sprinkle of mould.

      • +4

Mould? More like body fluid 💦

      • +6

So even by your own (frankly bizarre) standards, not "excellent" as advertised then

        • +4

Not defending the labeling but two things I want to point out are:

          1. A lot of sellers put more weighting on the screen condition when determining condition status because that's what most people care about

          2. It's a Thinkpad so it's destined to take a thrashing right out of the box. IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads are the go-to machines for serious coders and people who touch-type so you're going to expect shiny keys and palm rests, as well as oil all over the keypad. If you want refurbed machines which still look really nice then HP/Acer are good brands. They use brushed alu as the chassis so it's easier to clean and the target consumer are more casual users (less touch-typing and wear)

          • @nGu: Excellent generally menas looks almost new with a few small imperfections like scratches that are not generally visible.

          • +1

@nGu: Most enterprise level organisations don't buy brands based on what the role of the staff member is doing, they have a contract with one supplier and get everything from them. No coders are "picking" their random brand of laptop they want unless it's a perk of the job.

This laptop is well, well used, and it's probably becuase the laptop was used directly rather than docked. I used one of mine for 2 full years full time during covid and gave it back looking brand new because of the fact it was docked. Many coders I know Dock their laptop because they want the extra screen realestate. This laptop looks like it didn't even get a wipe down

          • +2

@nGu: I do coding for work, I had to actually go and look at my laptop to determine what brand it is, because:
            1. I don't care as long as it has the specs I need, and I don't get to choose the brand, that's IT purchasing with whoever is giving the head IT guy the best kickbacks at the time.
            2. it's docked behind my screens where it spends 95% of it's time because I want to use my big screens instead.

That laptop is in good condition, but not "excellent", and should have been classified as such by the seller

    • +3

I think it's in pretty good condition all things considered. Try wiping it down with some isopropyl alc (which is something you should do with all preowned stuff anyway)

      • +7

I did it after I received it. I used more than 10 alcohol wipes to clean it.

        • Do you have an after wipe down pic if you dont mind sharing?

    • +9

It's so easy to wipe that clean but no they actively chose to send it out like that. Makes you wonder what they actually did to "refurbish" the machines if they can't even give them a wipe.

      • +2

        Answer = nothing.

      • +1

probably just powered it on and off to check if it still booted up lol.

      • Set it up in the office toilet as a p0rnhub terminal

    • +6

Please reach out to us, this is definitely a mistake on our part. Happy to replace it for you

      • Is your store opening tomorrow? Can I go there to replace it?

        • +1

We are open on Monday, please send us an email as well, we can organise a replacement

    • +1

Every product is wiped before packing. My guess is that this got imprinted from the bubble wrap as sometimes we recycle bubble wrap.

As for the condition, classification is done on different variables such as age of the laptop, condition of the same model in the market(what the other sellers have). And mostly how does it look 20m away.

Lenovo and dell black panels tend to get more scratches than their silver variants. Our classification is based on that they won’t be visible from a distance.

The mould is our mistake and definitely should have been cleared before dispatch.

      • +6

Wow 20m away. No wonder the mould was missed. Wouldn't see any issues with any at that distance!

        • +1

I would not be able to see whether there's a laptop on the table at 20m

or the table for that matter

      • +2

        20cm*

  • +4

I feel like the ULC provessors shouldn't get an i7 badge…

  • +1

Is this about six years old?

    • +2

Well yes. But its only $299. What brand new laptop can you suggest for this price?

      • The one Realest-Whale posted up in the comments. $200 more but it's new with warranty…

        • I agree thats a nice laptop but if that $200 more is a bridge too far. For a struggling low income family it would most certainly be.

  • Do these come with OLED screen? Many reviews for the 1st gen X1 mention OLED screen. But I'm guessing 1920x1080 panel is a cheaper LCD option.

  • +2

I bought the 512gb version last time for $550. Very happy with it. Condition wasn't perfect. Expect some light wear on the case, keyboard and also some light scratches on the screen (not visible during a useage.). Battery condition is good enough and the charger was brand new, still wrapped up! It came pretty quickly via post. I use it mainly for studies, YouTube, movies etc….runs Lightroom CC with no probs too. Screen is nice and vibrant, touchscreen and stylus work well, wouldn't buy it to run any games though. Haven't tried any games but can't imagine it being great at that. Overall, it runs Win 11 nicely and doesn't feel sluggish or laggy to me. If you're looking for something portable, to do some work/studies, stream videos, at $300, this is an absolute steal IMHO.

  • +1

Is the SSD in it field-upgradeable or did they do something silly like solder it to the MB or something?

Wondering if I can just get a replacement myself if it dies or I need another one.

Also, is the CPU "certified" for Win11 or is the install winging it? :)

    • +1

I have the Gen 1 version of this, I wore the original SSD out and replaced it in a normal fashion.
Mine has Win 10 Pro and the same CPU, it does not pass the Microsoft test for upgrading to Windows 11, I don't know if the motherboard is different to this model.

My battery didn't last very long even though I run it almost always as a desktop with the battery only charging to 65%.
I suspect it was because the machine runs quite hot and it cooked the battery.
I have never heard the fan running on this thing.

Edit. I just realised this model is the Gen 1. Mine is the same except I have the higher resolution screen with a dedicated GPU, probably generating more heat.

  • +2

It's a 6 year old laptop I would hardly say it's a bargain.. more like an OzReasonablyPriced

    • It's a bargain I reckon so long is the condition is excellent.

  • you getting anymore stock or they gonna be lower quality

  • The tech is too outdated even at this price

    • +1

It's definately not outdated, very good specs actually.

      • Specs are pretty good, but this laptop was released in 2016.

        • yeah but it's cheap and can be comparable to much more expensive ones that are current.

  • This CPU wont run Win 11 about the only downside, otherwise Yoga are probably one of the best laptop designs besides the X1 carbons

  • thoughts on performance if just using the laptop as a parsec/steam remote play endpoint?

    • will be just fine, but deal already ended yo

  • can we upgrade the ssd?

    • Yes, I have done so myself.

      • cool, i'm going to get a 2tb one.

    • Yes, you can upgrade the ssd

      • Oh NOW you say so. :p

      • Any items available soon? Thanks

        • +2

Yes, a lot of newer Lenovo laptops

  • +1

got mine today, tells me the battery can not be charged due to normal wear, replace the battery. Also i canot sign in because i have no idea what password they used for the account it already has.

    • You have 2 options. Reinstall windows or you can blank out the windows password.

      https://opensource.com/article/18/3/how-reset-windows-passwo…

    • Did you get a tracking number for the delivery, or confirmation email or message or anything beforehand to say that it was on the way? I haven't even received a simple order receipt. Doesn't sound promising especially with a dead battery shiiiiiiiit!

      • +2

Replacement has been arranged. @9hundred send us your order number, we probably don't have your email on file

  • I received my laptop today, really impressed with the condition of it.

Has anyone figured out how to enable auto rotation (if it’s possible?).

    This is running Windows 11

    TIA

      • Thanks @xoom I had seen that before but tried again just in case. Rotation lock never appears in any of the settings, which makes me wonder if it’s possible for it automatically rotate. However automatic rotation IS enabled in the registry.

I can rotate the display by manually selecting the appropriate setting but I thought it would be simple to do this automatically…

        • +1

Maybe it's for the best. The rotation sensor on my yoga is glitchy and very often when I turn my laptop on in the morning, the screen is flipped. I have to go to display settings to un-flip it.

  • +1

Got mine today and is grade B at best, once I cleaned off all the dirt: Dirt 1 Dirt 2 I could then see all deep scratches from the keyboard: Scraches

    • Hi There,

It was sold as a good condition. On our website it mentions that product may show moderate use.

Still, happy to resolve this for you if you can email us at [email protected]

    • I have the same scratches on my Lenovo (bought brand new from Lenovo). It seems like a design flaw across many thin models.

      • Yes, that's correct, same with every Lenovo touchscreen that supports stylus.

However, @timpo you can reach out to us and we can resolve this for you
