  • why would anyone that source for a data center be making purchases on Amazon…

    • +21

Because they're rated for datacenter use but don't need to be in a datacenter.

    • +1

Because someone running a Proxmox VM "technically" have a datacenter.

The enterprise drives on amazon US are often from scammers selling refurbished or damaged stock. This is how I received mine from a deal last year- https://imgur.com/a/iCljwV2

      That looks terrible :(

This + australia tax is why I no longer buy bare drives.

I have similar issue with Amazon US as well. Mine was 4TB portable ssd. The package indicated it was 4TB drive inside, but acutally it was a used 1TB drive in the box. I guess scammer bought the drive, becase the package was only sealed from the top but not the bottom, scammer swapped the drive inside and then lodged the return. Then Amazon put the dodgy return back to the shelf straight away and continued to sell to other customer.

This only happened from Amazon US…

this should be posted as a deal, surely? I ended up purchasing this one instead of the one in the OP. Hope I didn't make a mistake XD

I have bought 2 WD Ultrastar drives from Amazon US. So far so good. The first one in 2020, 8TB DC HC 320. This drive has had a lot of use. The second drive is a 18TB DC HC550. 6 month usage. The Ultrastar are supposed to be the old Hitachi drives that are supposed to be the best.

  • i would be tempted by these if not for the fact that i already bought a 20tb External that and we have " Fast hdds" coming out in a short while ….

  • Ozbargain user "Neology" organised a group purchase last year for the 18TB HC550's @ $450

I went in for 2 drives, they arrived professionally packaged with a padded hard drive spacer, the drives report and function as expected. It might be worth investivatigating that supplier to see if you can still get a better price from a vendor that OzBargainers have previously had no problems with: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/682193
