    Did you buy insurance?

    • +1

when you use these services arent you covered by the company you rent from ?
what about when you rent a car from hertz ect ?

      • +4

Yes, in a way - but the excess is usually substantial (in most cases, in the thousands of dollars). You can usually pay an insurance levy that reduces the premium, down to a couple of hundred dollars, or maybe even removes it altogether in some cases. In this case, OP did not pay that levy and now faces the full insurance excess.

In the case of Hertz, it looks like their levy is $46 per day - but it's optional. Reading their Terms and Conditions for Australian hires, the excess without this waiver would be $5,500 which is $3,300 plus $2,200

        • +8

@blitz, never ever take up rental companies insurance, it is very, very expensive, take out travel insurance to cover the excess, most will pay up to $8,0000 in excess. It’s a no brainer.

  • +14

    nope

    • +66

I only upvoted because I know we're in for a good story.

      • +31

No insurance = OP now has to GoGet it fixed for a lot more $$$$

    • +3

Then take it to this guy

      You'll get 50% off

    • +3

Is your plan to fix it yourself before taking it back?

      • His brother-in-law is a panel beater and will fix it for a six-pack of beers and packet of ciggies

    • +87

      It doesn't.

      • +2

this person doesn't sound right huh?

        • +4

In some countries you get insurance for the driver and not the car.

  • +27

    As per https://help.goget.com.au/en/articles/4806662-damage-cover

The $2000 standard excess would be less than the cost to fix that damage yourself. From the pics, it looks like atleast two panels will need to be taken off and repaired/repainted which will cost more than the $2000 excess.

    • On the plus side, saved themselves $1k by doing it before the 21/02.

I wonder if GoGets insurance premiums go up after every crash that happens in their vehicles. Or if just the premiums of the person driving it go up.

Seems like a fool proof business model. Regardless of the person paying for extra insurance GoGet will still have their cars insured and paid for at the lower excess at the end of the day. Not dissing it, just interesting.

      • Good question.

It doesn't work like traditional insurance. There's specialised insurance companies that provide insurance for rental vehicles.

      • GoGet probably ‘self insure’ for minor damage. Their insurer would charge an absolute fortune to cover panel scrapes like the OP. It’s likely they may also have a panel shop on contract to get better rates to do their repairs.

I’ve worked with businesses that self insure. One had an excess of $50k to keep their insurance premiums down. They would pay anything less than $50k out of revenue and not make a claim until more than $50k.

    • To make things worse I think it's going to be $2500 not $2000 It's a van so it's classed as a premium vehicle

    • +77

Hour for the dents and scratches 😂
      $20 for paint 😂

      • -3

        200$ paint*
i wrote overall 5 hours, how many hours in your opinion?

        • +31

          Way more than 5 hours.

Doesn't matter what you or I think anyway. I've dealt with plenty of crash work, and that's thousands. As it's not your car, you don't have a choice, it has to be paid, whatever it is.

          • +14

@brendanm: @brendanm, you are right again.
As someone with a modicum of experience (20 or so years in the industry) I would say somewhere in the vicinity of $5K, plus or minus.
I have also repaired plenty of commercial vehicles, and that is NASTY. The damage starts at the window.
It's at least a second hand door, or at worst a reskin.
And then there is the livery.
And then there is cleaning and detailing.

        • +2

You can do whatever you want on your own car as long as it is roadworthy, but for other people's property you have to make-it-good (iow bring it to previous undamaged state) or compensate them so they can make-it-good. That means if I'm the owner I want the work to be carried by qualified smash repairer, that I will get warranty on materials and workmanship, that in this case there won't be any visible no matter how small scratches, dents or irregularities (e.g. paint peeling after few months).

Suck it up buttercup and cough out $2000 excess and next time either don't rent or pay extra insurance to avoid excess.

        • What exactly is your plan. Remove the door and hand paint on some Dulux?

    • +8

      Do it yourself then?

    • +13

If i book the van in a few weeks and they still didn't fix it can i do anything to get my money back? because i guess they would not bother fixing it.

      What the? 😂

They still have to be compensated for the damage you've caused to their property. Whether they actually fix it or not is up to them (not you!).

    • +47

I was a mechanic 10 years ago for a few months

Yup, totally means you know all about smash repairs… lol

      • +47

I watched 2 episodes of a law show 8 years ago. You totally defamed him there.

    • +1

If i book the van in a few weeks and they still didn't fix it can i do anything to get my money back? because i guess they would not bother fixing it.

As the van is drivable, they may delay the repair until it suits them. This could be several months if they have a preferred repairer. Could be that they save the money for just before the van gets sold off so it goes to auction in top condition.

    • +7

      You're absolutely delusional.
Being a mechanic (for a few months, haha) doesn't qualify you as a panel beater and painter. I'd love to see the end result if you attempted that repair.

    • +7

I was a mechanic 10 years ago for a few months

I watched a few hours of invasive heart surgery videos on YouTube a few years ago so I've now opened up a heart surgery business.

      • +2

Do you do arm transplants? I could use an extra hand at times.

        • +1

Lucky for you I'm running a 2 for one deal at the moment! How many do you want?

          • +1

@gyrex: Can I get two extra left hands? Current one is, erm, overused.

        • +1

Well if it isn't my old friend Mr McGreg. With a leg for an arm, and an arm for a leg…..

    • -1

Don't forget to factor in demurrage fee's. You have to pay for the lost rental revenue for the time the van is off the road getting repaired. This alone might cost more than 2k depending how long the repairer takes to do the job. Might take them a couple of weeks.

    • You were a mechanic not a panel beater…. You need to own up to your mistake and pay whatever it costs to repair

    • this is probably why you were only a mechanic for a few months, not a business owner or a panel beater.

    • You sound like you know what you're doing and how much it all costs. Fix it yourself and show us the before/after pics.

  • Thousands. It is not an hour of work.

  • +5

I counted 3 panels, maybe 4 with the door runner, roughly $1500/panel

  • I think this could be quite costly. The door and panel will need to be taken off, sanded down, reshaped and resprayed. And then you need to get the lettering colour matched and painted on.

This will take days of work, I would say 3 days at a minimum.

Very costly mistake dude, I do not envy you.

Moral of the story: do not move it yourself.

    • Moving yourself is not the moral of the story. He'd be guaranteed 2k out of pocket if he did that (versus 2k excess).

The moral of the story is don't crash your rental, and upgrade your excess if you can't afford it.

      • Are you moving interstate for $2k? Our last move was $550 including a weekend surcharge, you'd need a warehouse of grand pianos to rack up a bill like that

        • Just depends how much help you get moving I guess. It'll be 2k (or a lot more) if you have people do everything including packing, loading and unpacking. a van and a driver for a day is a lot less. Regardless nothing wrong with moving yourself.

          • @nigel deborah: It was $550 total for 2 guys and their truck to move all of our packed boxes and furniture for 3 hours

If you're hiring a moving van then you've already packed your own boxes, it ended up only being an extra $200 over getting a rental and doing it ourselves after insurance costs

    5k repair mate

    • +2

      Agree. Plus signwriter.

        • +17

Independent mechanics don't do smash repairs…

Last I checked, none of them have a spray booth

        • +3

Does the $3910 include loss rental revenue?

        • +3

          Your complaining about 4000? LOL

          • +23

@pharkurnell: this guy deserves all the bad things to come to him for his attitude alone

when you damage a company's means of profit, then you have to compensate for their loss of potential rental while the van is being fixed

i want to say good luck knowing the very worst is going to come his way… and soon

        • +8

If you've already got the answers, why bother asking the question?

        • My car quote just came back at $3000 quarter rear to fix. So yours is ok at that price

    • I concur. Plus looks like that glass might need to be replaced too. $4k minimum repair.
If the hinges are damaged and to be honest they might even just replace the whole door if the door won't allign and that you'll be seeing $6-8k minimum.

Plus don't forget cost of loss of rental.

    • +133

You know what pisses me off? People damaging other people's property, and then thinking they shouldn't have to pay to repair it.

      • +1

        100%

      • +1

Mod can you make 1 vote = 1000000000000 for each upvote for this one comment, pretty please?

      • You know what pisses me off? When people don’t know that the $ sign goes at the beginning of the numbers not at the end. It’s $2500 not 2500$.

        • Chill. There are lots of different ways to wire out a currency amount around the world. It is entirely possible that this person doesn’t have English/Australian as a first language.

          • @Euphemistic: Haha. I’m sure they’ve seen price tags at shops, etc especially if they’re posting on OzB. I call it lazy. You’re in Australia now, do it the Australian way.

    • +3

But when they go to sell it they’ll have to drop the price if it’s not repaired. Sure, it’s a rental van but they still require restitution for the damages. It’s up to them to determine what to do next. If it’s an insurance claim via go get they have to fix it.

    • +2

Even if they choose not to fix it the value of the vehicle has dropped by the equivalent amount it will cost to repair it.

They will cop the loss on it when they eventually sell the vehicle.

    • +2

Its completely up to them what they do with it, they own it. Get insured or get rekt.

    • +15

      What a sh..y day!!!

      shiny day?

    • +2

that is what the insurance is for, as it is not your usual car so crashing is highly likely to happen.

Not everyone can DIY, and is you need to DIY you would have to pay $100 more for a day or two while you are DIYing.

    • +2

      calculated risk

    • +5

      You done messed up

    • +16

      I don’t need a lesson to avoid a $2500 excess. I pay the $19.

    • +29

I love how you were in an accident and are trying to figure out how to game the system to get away from paying the $2k excess that you signed a contract stating you would.

I was a mechanic 10 years ago for a few months so to take it off and assembles it will take 1-2 hours, the paint is 20$ + 1 hour? the dents are probably another hour i guess? how 5 hours of work and a bit of paint costs thousands?

Also, absolutely on the floor laughing at this. How you can be so confident in something you know literally NOTHING about is beyond me. You were a "mechanic" for a few months, meaning you cleaned up the workshop for the actual mechanics when you were a teenager, and you're trying to educate everyone on how much it costs to do a costly repair?

fix it yourself before returning the van

And then when they see the ingoing condition report they see damage to the vehicle after you signed the end of lease statement saying you weren't in an accident, charge you the full excess and take you to court for fraud while you never get to use goget again. Sure, sounds like a great deal mate!

If they actually fixed it I don't mind paying because I got the excess at 2500$ but everything works smoothly and they will almost 100% just cover the letters and spray paint it in less than an hour and they made me pay 2500$ for this so it pisses me off.

You do realise that the damage you made reduces the resale value of the vehicle?

      so it pisses me off.

Probably pisses them off that you have a complete disregard for other peoples property.

    • +2

Well duh ! Who doesn't get rental coverage insurance, especially for a 1 day hire, that's just dumb.

    • It's not something you need a lesson to learn.. when you are hiring a vehicle especially for a short duration of time, extra insurance cover is not something you should pass..

    • Mate, you are not in a position to give a lesson.
Were you a teacher 10 years ago for a few months?

I live to read these types of posts

    • I have to psych myself up. I do enjoy them, but not too often otherwise I give up on humanity. What percentage of them are genuine? Or does OzBargain particularly attract deluded people and it's more than I think?

I sometimes wonder if a bunch of uni students are testing a new AI bot that auto generates these types of posts. Fine tuning the algorithm to get the most people interested.

  • +2

Sorry to hear op. I understand it's frustrating and expensive. And no doubt you understand why there's insurance, it's for unexpected accidents (duh).
Trying to fix it yourself, when you don't have the right tools will probably cause more headaches and damage (not including lost time).

It's just easier to pay it. If you have cash flow issues, you can probably go into a payment plan by contacting them, so it is spread out over time.

    Take care mate.
