Cheapest way to port out of Boost and port back in

Hey folks,

I'm currently on a Boost yearly plan which expires in around 3 weeks. Looking to get on Boost again to avail their first-time user deals, hence looking for a way to port out of Boost to another carrier and port back in.
Which SIM card(s) do you recommend for this purpose? Just looking for something inexpensive.

Thanks.

What ever is on special at coles/Woolies. Usually one of Vodafone or Optus is half price every other week

Not sure if it's 30 days port out time to be considered a new customer. If not this Amaysim 28 days is $3.00 after cashback.

    • It’s usually one bill cycle, so 28 days

      • +1

I ported away form boost and back in the same day. Was considered a new customer and got the better 12 month deal

    • Ported out and back in the same day with no issues. Still go the new customer bonus data offers

      • Can this work on Vodafone too? I'm with Voda and thinking of buying their one year sim card once my other one runs out.

        • I don't see why you can't

kogan mobile free esim card. instant.

Just call their customer service. Got my boost number transferred to a new boost sim with no hassle.

Thanks for that. When I call them, do I ask for a discount on the yearly plan? Or do I buy a prepaid yearly plan upfront and call them to transfer my number to it?

    • There has been some talk recently that Boost are specifically cracking down on this practice. But I guess it can't hurt to ask.
I think one reason they are unwilling to routinely do this is that they do not have an automatic system for this, it has to involve a customer service person and perhaps 2nd line help to actually do this. It costs them quite a bit. Whereas porting out and in, if it works (and frankly, it does mostly) doesn't require any people interaction at all.

      • +1

They may do so on the future, but I literally did this on the weekend.

So just buy the 12 month new SIM pack, go to their online chat and ask for your existing Boost number to be transferred to the new Boost SIM. Up and running in 20 minutes.

        • +1

Can confirm this works, just completed a transfer of my existing number to a new Boost Starter SIM pack by calling the support number.

However, I was unable to do this via the Boost support chat on the website. I asked to have credit from the new SIM transferred to my existing account, which they kept insisting they could not do. Which is technically correct I guess, so probably didn't help I was asking for the wrong thing. When I asked to be escalated, the CSR mentioned that online chat was the escalation point, so you will probably have more success with this process by calling the support number. Phone support CSR was not located in Australia (just based on the American accent - Philippines perhaps).

          • @Brashtastic: I tried via Support chat last night, it just sat there spinning for more than a hour across multiple devices. I eventually gave up and recharged for $170 (discount shows on desktop browser, but not in App)

Have to keep the Starter pack SIM for next year (Validity to July 2024)

            • @ESEMCE: Oh, $170 was available on website? I didn't recharge direct via Boost because the app was showing $200.

I ended up paying a couple of bucks under $170 anyway!

              • +1

@Brashtastic: Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised.
Not the cheapest, but also not too far off what I paid for the starter pack I was planning to recharge with and easier than going out last night to buy a SIM to port in and out of as a result of Woolworth's Mobile failures detailed lower down this thread.

    • I ported Boost→Boost last year, but when I tried again today they told me that they no longer support this. I bought a $2 Optus SIM so that I can transfer to a completely different network before porting back to Boost. I suppose I could have got a Kogan eSIM instead.

just use the new sim as recharge via online chat.

  • Have you already got your boost SIM yet?
When I bought my last SIM, the mob I bought it off had an option to add a vodafone SIM for $2 just for this purpose.

    • +1

This implies that porting to Vodaphone $2 sim allows porting number and activation without charging. Is this actually possible?
All the $2 sims I have (Optus, Crown, Lebara) expect me to add credit to activate.

  • I just did this on the weekend, my 12month Boost Sim was about to expire, so bought a new $300 boost sim on the $260 deal and they moved my number over to the new sim, took around 15min all up.
Purchased the Sim from the Boost website and was free express post.

I've found the live chat to be very easy to use and helpful for them, unlike Vodaphone

    • Thanks for your reply. As others have also said, this seems like the best way to go.
I’m assuming this works with the Boost SIM purchased from elsewhere as well? (And not just their official website)

      • Correct. I have bought them from Ebay resellers on past occasions. Much more simple than porting in and out with another carrier. If you purchase the $300 sim you can use the code BOOST260 to get it for $260 with 260Gb of data instead of 240GB too currently.

  • I'm just doing a month port out to Woolies 12Gb plan for $10 (discounted offer ends tomorrow)
Easy, price competitive and same metro experience.

    • Woolies appear to have never actually shipped out a SIM.
Their online chat assured me it was shipped when I chased them last week, but I still have no SIM pack today 3 weeks after ordering.
Had to recharge the Boost service last night.

  • Dont port out. Just get new sim card and then reach out to them by phone or on chat. They transfer your number to the new sim

  • Probably Kogan $2 sims

    • +1

eSIM completely free for 30 days or use the voucher from the eSIM with a spare Kogan physical SIM at hand

      • When you cannot use esims then that $2 is best regular option (with no spare sims, nor any ongoing boost mobile cashback deal).

But thanks I didn't knew that we could use esim to get voucher to use with physical sim

  • +1

Kogan $0 for the first month esim.
    1 month of free connection.

  • Felix mobile has the first month free if you have decent Vodafone coverage where you are - I am on it at the moment, porting back to boost at the end of the free month

  • +2

I did this few days ago with Telstra $2 sim.
Ported out to telstra (there is an option to activate without recharging online) and back to Boost. All under 15 minutes.

    • They finally fixed porting to/from Telstra? It used to be the most painful experience taking days of chasing.

      • Telstra is not letting me port my number back out - anyone have any solutions?

  • Seeing as I have paid for the Boost prepaid plan sims, I am fine with contacting customer service to switch my number over. I did this recently and when they'd worked out what I was trying to do, they were happy to do it. They activated the new sim, ported my number across and deactivated the old one. However there is a glitch for iPhone:
My wife noticed that iMessage content is coming from the strange number associated with the new sim. This is continuing despite restarting the phone and calling each other with my usual number.

    • I eventually worked out that the new number had been picked up by apple Id. After removing it manually, everything seemed to be working again.

I activated the new Boost sim, waited 1 week and then requested my old number to be ported over (Boost old plan to Boost new plan) and they did it without hassle.

  • I think the best option for now is the Aldi $5 sims, it's 365 days but only $5 credit which doesn't last long.

I usually port to it for 2 weeks till I port back to boost

    • Seems unnecessary to port out at all. Just activate the new Boost sim and contact customer support to bring the old number across.

      • Have you tired doing that? Its a totally nightmare!

  • Just had a nightmare experience with boost customer service not wanted to transfer my old number back to new sim. What is the cheapest known option to port out and back to boost? I dont have esim.

    • Yo. I am in the same boat. Just had the chat deny the load, I see no point in calling the helpline.

I guess I will go to Coolies tonight and will pick the cheapest option.

      • How much was the cheapest option ? I need to port out and back in soon.

        • +1

Went to codes, got a $10 vodafone sim for $2.

  • Any more going through this? Previous years boost online chat has applied the $200 sim card to my existing boost sim. However now they are unable to complete this.

I could port to a kogan sim card and then port back to boost if need be.

Is there a minimum time frame required when porting to kogan before I can port back to boost?

  • Just port out and back in bridging with Telstra start kit $2

It takes some time to update the number as Telstra. After about 30mins, it worked.

Will see how it runs in the future.

  • Can anyone explain the difference between these two offers
    https://luckymobile.com.au/mobile-plus/product/boost-200-sim…

    https://www.oztechbiz.com.au/product/boost-200-prepaid-tri-c…

How much data would each provide for the 12 months? First seems to imply 140GB ($14.58/mo). Second states 130GB ($13.42/mo w/ discount code).

    Have I got that right?

  • I'm kind of stuck atm as I had been buying the boost sims with cashback and getting them to use them as recharges. They will no longer do this.

    What's the best option now?

Can I use the Kogan $2 sim and not pay for a plan and port back to Boost? Or is the Aldi $5 the only option?

    Thanks

  • I just use whatever is on special at Cole's/WW weekly.
Sometime you'll get a $30 Lebara for $6 or maybe a $30 Amaysim $35 Optus for $10. Use this for the month then port back.

Just check the catalogues at the two supermarkets.. they'll usually advertise it too. Like the 2nd or 3rd last page.

  • I want to port out from BOOST and port back in to pick up new customer bonus data
How long do I have to port out for? Is 24 hours sufficient?

  • Just ported my boost number across to a new boost $300 plan.

We are no longer able to do this over chat.

Keep your old sim in the phone and call to get the transfer done (1258881).
Over call they were able to do the change but mentioned that they have made a note on my account that I have done this and will not be able to do this in the future.
Transfer was almost straight away but they did say it could take up to 4hrs.

I have the bonus data on my plan now too.

  • My situation, have a Boost Sim in a LTE router that is about to expire. Would like to "recharge" that Sim. So tried the same pathway that many have gone down. Chat first, but told had to speak to someone. Given 125881 as the support number. But this number only works on a boost service and the Sim is stuck in a remote router so got no boost service to phone on. So rang 1800100933 option 7 option 1 to get to a human. Told him what I wanted to do and said the same as above, don't usually do this, but as a one time courtesy will do this and a note will be on my file. Then it became obvious that what Boost was doing was activating my new starter kit Sim with the old number (porting away and porting in). They were not truly recharging my existing Sim with amount from my starter pack, So therefore I would have to physically change the Sim in my remote router. I had misunderstood this whole process of purchasing a discounted starter pack to "recharge" an existing Sim. Using this starter pack meant having to swap Sim cards.
Anyway I explained to support that I now didn't want to proceed as I would have to arrange a time to get to this remote router. He then became quite pushy and explained that I needed to nominate a specific time in the near future and he would ring me. I certainly got the impression that this was not just a courtesy arrangement but suspect that he gets paid a certain amount to perform this task as he was quite persistent in trying to get me to make a definitive time for him to call me. So in the end I don't really need the existing mobile number that is on my router, and will just activate the starter Sim on my existing Boost ID account with a new number. Just documenting this here for others to read as this thread has become useful in dealing with Boost Sims.

I think you can port to a Telstra $2 sim without recharging then port back to Boost.

  • +1

So far, I have found $2 prepay SIM from Telstra, $5 SIM from Kogan and $5 prepay SIM from Aldi Mobile . Sharing these here for others benefit as well.

  • Any updates on this? Does "temporary" porting-out using a $2 SIM pack (from Amaysim/Vodafone/Optus) work WITHOUT having to buy any recharge credit?

    • Don’t buy the $2 Vodafone SIM cards, they force you to buy a recharge of at least $10 on activation.

      • Can verify. Got given a free voda sim to do the port out and seemed like $10 was the forced minimum recharge option. Got onto Boost Chat and played dumb. Asked them to help me activate my new sim. They said I needed to recharge or they can activate a new number. I said I definitely need to keep the number, it says "Keep you own number…" on the package. They reiterated this is meant only for new numbers, but as a one-time courtesy they will activate it and transfer value to my existing number. Phew!

Will try one of the others mentioned above when I do wife's phone next month.

  • Hey folks,

Anyone recently tried using the prepaid SIM as recharge? My 1-year is coming to an end soon so need to decide if they are still entertaining this. Else will have to go the port out way I guess.

  • I can confirm you can port out from boost, then port back in as soon as you're activated on the other network.
Went from boost to Lebara to boost within 30mins

  • Can someone please confirm if I can still use a Telstra prepaid $2 sim to port without paying for recharge? Anyone done this with Boost->Telstra->Boost recently? Or perhaps cheapest way possible?

    • Have you tried this given it's been 2 months?

  • Just got a Lebara for $1 and loaded another $5 to port from Boost.. Will port back to Boost after a day or two..

    • How do you get for $1
Online cheapest plan is $9 ?

      • +1

Got from woolies and $5 loaded while activation

  • The system will no longer allow it them to do it at all. Even over the phone.

The sim can now only be activated on a brand new number or refunded.

    • …Just to clarify, you can still port your existing number out and back in as a new customer…

PS: According to Boost FAQs, they’ll honour current inclusions (except for the bonus 10Gb for activation by 5/8/24) for $230 sims purchased prior to the price increase on 21 October, even if they’re activated at a later date, provided it’s before the sim expiry date. I recently bought a couple of cheap ones off ebay that expire in Sept 2025.
