  • Telstra network, 52 GB for $20. That's a good deal if you are going out 'whoop whoop' somewhere for a week or two, and need to keep the kids (etc.) in data.

Haven't found coverage on Woolworths that great in various parts of NSW… Quite often swapping (dual SIM) to amaysim to get data coverage.

      • +1

I just did a trip along the Victoria Highway / Stuart Highway (WA/NT/SA) with a boost sim (full telstra). Coverage was quite poor; around roadhouses optus often worked where telstra had no coverage, apart from the last 100ks when telstra won hands down.

        • Boost over Woolworths any day. Consistent 200Mbs on boost where Woolworths and belong seem to max out at 60Mbs.(b818).

          • @randomusername2017: Boost sits on Telstra's retail network (For telstra customers)
All other MVNOs using Telstra's network are actually on Telstra's wholesale network.
Not quite the same but coverage is still excellent compared with Vodafone.
So Woolworths over Vodafone/Kogan every day of the week from personal experience travelling up and down the NSW coast!

    • You don't get full network access, so no 4GX, which is something you need to consider if going to rural areas

      • Re:

'You don't get full network access …'

Wait, what? Why not? Does Woolworths state/acknowledge this anywhere? Can I ask what your assertion is based on? It's not that I don't believe you, I'd just like to read all of the relevant information from an official source.

        • You'll have to read WW T&Cs. Boost Mobile is the only MVNO on the Telstra network that gets 4GX access, which they are in the process of being further incorporated (Boost users got a text last week) into Telstra as we speak (At present they use the same call centres and backend). The easiest way to see the restriction of the 4GX network is to view the coverage maps for WW mobile and compare to either Boost or Telstra.

This compares the different MVNOs on the Telstra network and states boost is the only one getting 4GX (AKA NextG, 4G+ and so on)

"All Telstra Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) run on the Telstra wholesale network with the exception of Boost Mobile. While Telstra’s full network reaches 99.5% of the population the wholesale version covers 98.8%. It might not seem like a huge difference, but it means that Telstra MVNOs may not be an option for customers in rural areas."

Where I live I can only use boost (or Telstra) because of this restriction

@Froot Loops: Thank you very kindly for this detailed and clearly written response. I'm sure others will benefit from your response, as well as me. Thank you for taking the time to compile it.

            • @GnarlyKnuckles: All good. If you don't travel rural often, you may not notice any difference (unless the towers are congested). WW mobile isn't a bad choice for someone in the cities / coastal areas, it just becomes an issue if you drive inland in some areas). You can check the coverage map on WW webpage to see if this suits. Here the standard boost deal, which is very popular on Ozbargain (it's a year's prepaid plan, so you'll need to calculate data usage to see if it suits). They also have a 300GB/year prepaid plan.

Another reason WW mobile maybe a good idea, is you get 10% off groceries at Woolworths (once a month). This suits some people well

          • +1

@Froot Loops: That information is now out of date and has recently changed, all the Telstra MVNO's are in the process of providing exactly the same benefits of what was only available to Boost. My ALDIMobile and Belong sims are now both providing VoLTE, 4G+ and Wifi Dialing. Couldn't be happier to be honest.

            • @T3J: Do you have a link to that information? I cannot find anything online regarding Telstra allowing them to use 4GX. Cheers

              • @Froot Loops: It's been quietly happening, I can assure you both my MVNO sims are working as explained above.. A bit of a google gave me this, and theres a little bit of info on the AldiMobile site. cant find anything for Belong: https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/News/Telstra-WiFi…

I too live in regional area so am very keenly aware of what services work out here for us… I dont have telstra coverage at home but have no optus coverage at work… Now thankfully due to this update Belong does Wifi Dialing so I can use my phone at home in wifi range with Fixed Wireless NBN as the backhaul.

                • +1

@T3J: I understand VoLTE (& e-sim) was going to be rolled out, but I would be shocked if they let other companies on 4GX, since it's the reason many customers stay with them. It would also cause massive issues with 4GX network being strained, which in rural areas would be an issue. Just have to wait and see.

                  • @Froot Loops: Yeah I think you are right, its not the double bandwidth offered by 4GX but the great thing is those other coveted things like VoLTE, Wifi Dialing work perfectly now with the MVNO telstra services. Just being able to make and receive calls is a win out here :D.. Id debated Boost or Telstra direct so my phone worked at home but I wouldn't bother now, as you rightly say it was one of the incentives to swap carrier but not anymore for me. As someone in a regional area, we've got phones in the house on Telstra, Belong, Aldimobile, Moose (Optus MVNO) currently and they all work great.

    • Actually 104GB with the current double data promo ;)

    • Yes Woollies Mobile has great coverage
      Leaves Kogan Mobile for dead..seriously.

We need half price on yearly plans.

    • And on 180 day plans

    • You missed out on Amaysim's recent Half price 365 day black Friday deals no doubt.
I got the $120 60GB 365 day plan for $60 thanks to OB!

      • Yes i got that one for my partner work phone. That was a great deal. It would better with woolworths as it give you 10% off grocery each month.

  • +3

First time posting. Just thought I’d chime in. Anyone considering this needs to be mindful that the Telstra wholesale network can be very average. I find calls drop out regularly.

The good news is Woolworths mobile just activated wifi calling and volte so be interesting to see if that helps.

the reason I persist with it is the 10 % off groceries. I find if you do online purchase first you can then get another 10 % off in store on the same month

    • +1

Wi-Fi calling wasn't working for me last week. Does it work now?

      • +1

I had issues also, had to turn off and on wifi calling and restart the phone, it is working for me now

    • +1

So MVNOs except boost) do not get access to the full network (no 4GX), which will likely explain the average experience. In rural areas this is a big issue for many.

  • Currently Im getting 10% off a month from my pet insurance.
Does anyone know whether I am entitled for 2x 10% off every month if I get this or nah?
    Thanks

    • Link another EDR.

  • Can I buy this and top up with the yearly plan to get some savings on the yearly plan.

    • Yea that will work

      • +1

How does that work? When do you pay the difference to get the yearly plan? During activation process?

So if you get the $40 starter pack (for $20) and activate the $150 yearly plan, you would need to pay the difference of $110? So you get the $150 yearly plan for $130?

        • Yea that's correct. During your account setup, it will ask what plan you want to choose. Select whatever plan you want, yearly if that's your flavour, and the $40 or whatever value you've purchased will be credited already.

I personally go on the 6 month plan as it's cheaper for me

  • Is there any expiry on when it needs to be activated?

  • My Boost subscription expires tomorrow - is it a bad idea to purchase this to port to (and back to Boost after), given they both use the Telstra network?

    • No, process within 2 hrs. WM always has one hr buffer for a user to reject porting.

  • Can i get same price in store?

    • It should be, but no cashback or EDR pts.
