    Best pal for travel.

What are the example scenarios of using this?

    • +2

I use one to provide wifi for my smart devices in a van setup. They are often used as travel routers to give access to multiple devices through hotel, airport, airplane wifi, etc. with or without VPN

    • +8

      I've used it for

      • hotels that limit you to 2 devices per room, this connects to the hotel, my many devices connects to the travel router
      • vpns all the devices (if you set up a vpn in the router), so i dont have to individually setup a vpn service on everyones devcies and show them how to use it
      • i dont have to setup everyones wifis whenever we moved hotels, jsut setup this device once
  • is it good enough as a wifi 'bridge' to connect eufy homebase 3?

    • I don't know enough about the eufy homebase 3, but I don't see why not.

    • Should do I use one connect my wired network to Starlink works a treat never had a issue

  • Hey guys, so just ti clarify. If i am travelling ovwrseas, staying in hotels, using their wifi (through mobile devices) this will make it more secure?

    • This doesn't automatically make using hotel wifi more secure, but this can be used as a tool to make hotel wifi
      more secure.

    • +7

If you connect your devices to the public hotel wifi often you can see every other device attached (just load Fing one day and do a scan) and more scarely they can see yours. Potential malicious actors may be able to try to hack your devices. Using the travel router you are protected by a firewall on a completely different subnet and other devices can only see your travel router.

You can then quite easily add a VPN service for all your devices to further mask your traffic.

      • @Limbot sorry to derail this topic

Do you happen to know an approx timeline for Beryl AX to be stocked on Amazon storefront? I got some Amazon gift cards to use.

        • +1

Ive been told it should be February but that's it. They are normally adverse to discounting when they first come out but I'll see what I can do 😊

        • Beryl ax been out almost a year on Amazon au. Usually on offer sub $90.
          Beware the size though

          • @Kanjus: Beryl AX (WiFi 6) has only just been released.

            • @Limbot: Oops confused with slate i think

  • Thx for explaining mate

  • I'm very confused on buying one in regards of portability. I recently bought AX1800 but too big and heavy. Now I want to buy something portable and can provide good vpn speed. Please guide me.

    • Though it's not the latest and greatest (in fact it's end of life but firmware supported for the next two years) even though I have one of practically every model I still use my original Slate AR750s-Ext. For me best balance between size, weight, power requirements and speed.

That being said other than that even the AXT1800 (Slate AX) is smaller than the Flint and then models like the Beryl AX and Slate Plus smaller again…… Just not as small (but more powerful) than the original Slate.

Using my Beryl GL.inet now in Clare caravan park for the first time - really impressed

The thumbnail for this router looks like a mirror reversed CBA logo….

  • Ahh…was looking for a dual solution that takes 4G/5G SIM as well as route an existing WiFi connection.

    Recommend any?

    • +1

Two methods. If you you have a redundant 4G/5G phone lying around, then you can use it with the Mango. Connect it with a USB cable (tether), or to your phone's hotspot. Either way, instant subnet created by the Mango, using the phone as the WAN connection.

      I've done both.

If you want a more mobile solution, then Mudi GL-E750 would be worth a look. https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-e750/

It's like an upgraded Mango (does 2.5G and 5G Wi-Fi), takes a 4G SIM card, can use a ethernet cable, and has a 7000mAh battery so that you can have a mobile hotspot in your bag while you're walking around in another country with a local SIM in it.

I haven't shelled out for a Mudi, but I adored its much maligned predecessor the GL-MiFi, even though I had to mod external antenna onto it for better range.

There are advantages to both methods.

  • Random question, but sometimes when I would travel internationally I would connect my phone to a hotels wifi and use a VPN on my phone to pretend I was in Aus to watch sports. Sometimes it would work, sometimes apps would say "vpn detected, app won't work, turn VPN off."

Will getting this modem and then setting up the VPN on the modem make the phone think I am in Aus so I can use the apps I want. Or do the apps know there is a VPN involved somehow anyway?

    • Hard to offer a general answer, but you can use two gl.inet devices to connect to the internet via your home internet connection in Australia. That will make you appear as if you're at home.

Be warned here too that lots of content providers are blacklisting VPN providers where possible. Was in Japan recently and wanted to watch some Abc iview and sbs ondemand.

Using Keepsolid to Sydney I was geoblocked but going back to my home Wireguard server was all good.

Assuming they'd blocked Keepsolid ip address range.

  • Grabbed one thanks.

  • Will this connect me to Commonwealth banks services?

  • Been in south america the last 3mths. Had this little mango router running the entire time with a wireguard Surfshark VPN back to Aus. Rock stable.

  • Designed for Commbank?
