I don't know anything about air purifiers. The Xiaomi ones seem popular here and cost around the same. So please rip me in the comments telling how Xiaomi model XXXX is better and cheaper.

I bought a Sandisk E30 for $89 thanks to @paloverde88. I still intend to buy a combination of things in my other post to make it to $500 for $50 off, but maybe include this thing if it's good.

Edit: $198 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/Philips-Purifier-1000-AC1215-70/dp…

@mrvaluepack: One is a comparison to the best available. One is a comparison for the same financial tier. Different consuners have different preferences. It doesnt stack up on either.

Was that genuinely not possible for you to understand without a diagram.

                • @[Deactivated]: Yes, it was not possible to understand your logic and judging by other people's responses to you, they don't as well.

You never compared the philips to another one at a similar price point. You have only compared it to the $700 samsung.

Again, "best available" according to your opinion with regards from Choice. Lol

Maybe you should go for a constructive business writing english course so that your arguments could be better presented. And perhaps work on your logic as well.

@mrvaluepack: It's entirely possible for you to be in the company of several idiots at the same time. In fact I'll daresay it's a frequent occurence.

                    Bye now.

              • @mrvaluepack: Obsidiate back to blasting in comments! 😅

For someone who indicates a preference to touting facts Obsidiate appears to enjoy selectively presenting charged, fluffy and exaggerated language. 😅

  • How is the sound on this? I am a light sleeper

    • I am a light sleeper as well. I just placed an order last night, hopefully it's not too noisy. I have a Xiaomi Pro which is super quiet and I don't even notice it even late at night without all the ambience noise. Or I'm just used to it now. Either way, some white noise can even help you sleep better.

      • Why did you not buy another Xiaomi?

        • I'm buying for a smaller room, the Xiaomi is a lot bigger in comparison looking at the photos. The other thing is the Xiaomi has no handles so not so easy to move it around (it's not heavy or anything).

    • On most models of air purifier you can control the fan speed, and the machine makes very little noise at low speeds. The noise is basically the same as that of a large fan, with adjustable speeds. Note that a low level of noise also means that the machine is not doing much air filtering, since the basic premise of an air purifier is a powerfal fan forcing air through a HEPA filter to capture particles/pollutants.

So it's always a trade-off: if you run the air purifier in "night" mode, you're also not getting much air purification. I always suggest manually running an air purifier at medium or high speeds rather than relying on the auto mode.

    • Very quiet on speed 1. If you keep this thing on "Auto" mode at night - it might pick up something and go in god damn turbo mode which you might find annoying - specially if you are a light sleeper.

    • The white noise will help your sleep.

  • reading this whole thread about peoples places being dusty and soforth..wouldnt a clean and vacuum with a hep filter just clear all this up every week be the solution to the problem…?

    • +3

No, it wouldn't. I live in a house, there is dust constantly floating in the air presumably brought in from the air outside and our clothes etc, either way my room gets very dusty very quickly even though I vacuum regularly, if not once a day at least once every other day.

    • There remove bit more than dust. It has a carbon filter.

You need to look at the CADR - the higher the number the better

  • how useful is something like this in an apartment or do you need one in every room sort of thing? Or what about a large living area in a house.

    • +1

Depends on the CADR (clean air delivery rate) of the air purifier. This is a small machine, rated for a CADR of 270 m³/hr, suitable for rooms up to 63 m². So it's suited for a small to medium-sized room. And BTW, the CADR figure is for the air purifier running at max power, so the machine will always be loud at that setting (in this case ~60 decibels), regardless of what the marketing claims. "Night" or "quiet" modes run at very slow fan speeds, so the CADR will be far lower in those situations.

To cover an entire apartment or house, you basically would need one such machine for every 1-2 rooms.

But it really depends on what you are using the air purifier for, I don't think most people need to cover their entire home.

I own two Xiaomi 3H air purifiers, and have one in my bedroom and one in the hallway next to the front door. I only run my machines for a few hours a day, but every person's situation is different so YMMV.

  • Can anyone recommend a model with a washable filter?

    • +2

Don't think you'll be able to find any washable HEPA filter

  • +1

For what it's worth, I have this model after being admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties due to some unknown allergens that come every July and August. It definitely has made an improvement to the bedroom air quality. You can feel the air is fresher and crisper. My allergies have noticeably improved as well.

  • Anyone who can recommend an air quality measurement thingo?
How do I know my air quality is bad and how can I measure it reliably? Any first hand information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Bought this for dust and thinking of returning it. Running it in a 3m by 3m room at level 3 and it does basically nothing. Can only recommend for allergies and so forth

Seriously considering just importing a booster fan with speed controls and building a Cuboid at this point. Will cost way less than buying some $700 purifier
